Story
Something sinister is going on in Baronville. The rust belt town has seen four bizarre murders in the space of two weeks. Cryptic clues left at the scenes - obscure Bible verses, odd symbols - have the police stumped. Amos Decker and his FBI colleague Alex Jamison are in Baronville visiting Alex's sister and her family. It's a bleak place: a former mill and mining town with a crumbling economy and rampant opioid addiction. Decker has been there only a few hours when he stumbles on a horrific double murder scene.

Publisher's Summary
David Baldacci's remarkable detective Amos Decker - the man who can forget nothing - was first introduced in the sensational New York Times best seller Memory Man. Now Decker returns in a stunning new novel....
The Fix
Amos Decker witnesses a murder just outside FBI headquarters. A man shoots a woman execution style on a crowded sidewalk, then turns the gun on himself.
Even with Decker's extraordinary powers of observation and deduction, the killing is baffling. Decker and his team can find absolutely no connection between the shooter - a family man with a successful consulting business - and his victim, a schoolteacher. Nor is there a hint of any possible motive for the attack.
Enter Harper Brown. An agent of the Defense Intelligence Agency, she orders Decker to back off the case. The murder is part of an open DIA investigation, one so classified that Decker and his team aren't cleared for it.
But they learn that the DIA believes solving the murder is now a matter of urgent national security. Critical information may have been leaked to a hostile government - or, worse, an international terrorist group - and an attack may be imminent.
Decker's never been one to follow the rules, especially with the stakes so high. Forced into an uneasy alliance with Agent Brown, Decker remains laser focused on only one goal: solving the case before it's too late.

boring mystery
This novel had a slow moving plot, that mostly consisted of the detectives talking to people and getting more information about a puzzling murder that Decker witnessed. There is not a lot of action, and the murder was not especially interesting. Decker was introduced in Memory Man (which I thought was an okay novel). He has a photographic memory but his behavior is sometimes similar to a person on the Autism spectrum. The problem is that Decker is not a very interesting nor believable character. None of the other characters in this are either interesting or believable. I hoped that this would be exciting near the climax, but it didn't. With only 2 hours remaining, I finally gave up on this. I generally like Baldacci novels, but this was his worst, in my opinion.

Not Baldacci's Best Work or Narration Performance
I am generally a fan of Baldacci but this book was very disappointing, both the story and the performance. Particularly since I enjoyed the first Amos Decker book. I don't want to provide too many details since i don't want to give anything away to those who have not yet read/listened to it. But in general the story had way too many unbelievable things that just did not make sense to me.
The whole clown thing was just weird. There is no way that would have been a thing. Same thing with the "drop" scenarios, way too contrived and complicated aspects.
And the FBI and other agency team members tell things to people who never would be told what they were told during such a national security investigation. Either because it would be giving things away to potential suspects or divulging confidential information to people who would never be told the things due to "need to know" or confidentiality. And certain characters act very out of character in several scenes, showing a fear. almost hysteria that does not make sense with their character buildup.
The performance had its own issues. Too often the narrators mixed and match voices/accents, making it difficult to follow who was speaking. This was particularly true of the character with the southern accent, where in the course of the same string of lines the southern accent would come and go at random. Simple editing could have fixed this. And finally, the use of emotive speaking or tone seemed way off in a number of different places.
All in all, the story and the performance seemed to have been rushed and just plain mailed in. Not quality expected from either this author or the performers.
