Gone woke
Done with this series now that the books have an underlying woke agenda. These books are geared toward 8 - 12 year olds, but have now become infested with Woke nonsense. Just write about dragons. There is no reason to infect a story about dragons with transgender ideology other than to appease a special interest minority. The plot is terrible, poor character development, and overall awful quality now that wokeness became the focus. Would not recommend especially for the intended age demographic.

really good, only minor problems
pretty good, just got a little convoluted at times, but still very enjoyable!
if I had to list my least favorite bit for the sake of 'because I want to' then I would say that I wish the scorching stayed more of a secret, something for the reader (or listener) to think about and theorize on. and I think there could have been a better point where tui could have revealed that, like maybe during another human perspective book.
but overall, still an enjoyable experience!

Good but not amazing…
Before I start please do read the book it has flaws but it deserves to be read
Let’s start with the stuff I loved about the book.
1. We finally get to know a new Mudwing, it has been very annoying for the last few arcs where the only mudwings we knew were the Queen, Clay, and his family. (And the false dragonet of destiny.) so that was a nice breath of fresh air.
2. Getting to see MoonWatcher and Qibli in action again was amazing (they are my personal favorite ship so don’t judge me)
3. I like how they used the bracelets of stealth. And how they worked also was nice, with its own drawbacks like having to de-stealth to stealth new dragons (or humans).
4. I liked how they slightly changed my view on Swordtail. (But I still think he is kinda dumb compared to most dragons)
5. McManus did an INCREDIBLE JOB as always
6. The story was interesting till part 2…
Now for my issues…
1. Moon, Qibli, Pineapple, and Tsunami all got kidnapped almost immediately so there goes the three returning dragon protagonists from book 2, 6, and 10
2. Then immediately afterwards what does the party do? They take a vote on what to do. Option A. Go save the characters who are practically the leaders (besides Sundew and Lynx) or option B. Go continue on the mission and hope that Wasp doesn’t figure out how to use MoonWatcher’s Future seeing or mind reading abilities!!!
Yep they choose option B. Thanks to Wren for being the stupid human having the deciding vote. (The humans are the source of the problems with this book tbh)
But you’ll think at least they aren’t splitting up the party though right?
WRONG!
Sundew and Lynx, arguably the only leaders left among the group say “you guys get to The continent we will try to save them and meet you there in 2 days. If we aren’t there by then continue without us.”
Surprise surprise they don’t show up. There goes the book 13 protagonist now… along with Lynx
So now we have only, Luna, Cricket, Sky/wren, and Bullfrog.
So let’s skip the rest up to the end of part one
Do you remember the humans in the prologue? Hope so cause these idiots are the reason I nearly threw my phone at the wall. “LETS LISTEN TO A DARK ABYSS AND KIDNAP A BABY DRAGON NOT LIKE THAT IS A BAD IDEA…” I am genuinely shocked that the humans didn’t think “hmm maybe something is off when a dark abyss wants sacrifices…” but no they listened to it instead of doing what I personally think any sane human would do. RUN AS FAR AWAY FROM THE ABYSS AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE AND TAKE EVERYTHING YOU CAN WITH YOU! But no. “Let’s listen to the voice of a possible demon.” Long story short the baby dragonet that Luna gets attached to (which I did too so protect that baby!) gets taken by a possessed human and they jump down the abyss. Luna naturally dives in after the dragonet. (Again I do not have a problem with Luna just the humans who started this idiocy) and she and the dragonet get captured by the heart of evil. And guess who is the main villain? Wasp? Nope, It is actually the human who originally started the scorching. Cotton. He kidnapped the eggs of dragons and all the other human empires followed suit then the dragons burned everything! But oh no Cotton escapes to the lost continent! So he continues to rule. (Now here is where I gave up on the human race in this book series) when someone causes untold destruction due to their actions, it is generally common for them to be imprisoned and punished, or at the very least removed from their leadership position. But no the humans are like “nothings wrong here!” And Cotton HELPED THE HEART OF EVIL GROW MORE POWERFUL! Then some of the humans react like “okay… he has lost it.” But of course most of these idiots still think “OUR LORD AND SAVIOR!!!!” And feed his ego. The human factor is the problem of this book plain and simple. The humans (with the possible exception of Wren and the other human who helps the team) are complete idiots.
I really wanted this book to do well but the humans were just so hard to understand with their logic I mean if they were afraid of him, it was not clear enough, otherwise they were just brainless from the start…
But I do want to say other than the humans this book was pretty amazing definitely worth the read to me. Not as horrible as Dragonslayer so that is a plus and I would say this is my second favorite book of the arc just under “the dangerous gift”.
If you can power through the human idiocy you will understand why I like this book. I still don’t love it but I got to give it credit where it is due.
I had 3 must haves for this book to be a success
1. MOON AND QIBLI MUST SURVIVE (that ship deserves to keep sailing)
2. DO NOT GET RID OF THE MUDWING (Clay and his family need to stop hogging the spotlight for their tribe)
3. Wasp does NOT get a redemption arc. She doesn’t get to hide behind “oh I was controlled by the heart of evil!”
I am extremely proud to announce that those three criteria were 1000% met so this book deserves a read.
So let’s go over the star ratings
Performance 5 stars well done McManus you did FANTASTIC!
Story 3 stars I am sorry but the fact that half of the team just dipped in the beginning really hurt the mood, I would say it would take half a star so I’ll be generous there. But the HUMANS UTTERLY CRUSHED THIS BOOK’S CHANCES OF BEING AMAZING. They really didn’t feel human to me they felt like religious zealots the entire time and it really hurt the story. They kind of just did as the plot demanded of them.
