She calls herself Hope Miller, but she has no idea who she actually is. Fifteen years ago, she was found in a small New Jersey town thrown from an overturned vehicle, with no clue to her identity. Hope eventually started a new life with a new name in a new town that welcomed her, yet always wondered what she may have left behind—or been running from. Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.
Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands.

But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. EXTRAORDINARY IN SO MANY WAYS
- By Janna Wong Healy on 06-29-17
By: Fredrik Backman
Publisher's Summary
This snappy, sassy redemption story set in small-town Montana is "a wild and crazy debut novel by a talented young writer" (Jackie Collins), filled with an uproarious and unforgettable cast of characters you won't want to leave behind.
Welcome to Quinn, Montana, population: 956. A town where nearly all of the volunteer firemen are named Jim, where the Dirty Shame - the only bar in town - refuses to serve mixed drinks (too much work), where the locals hate the newcomers (then again, they hate the locals, too), and where the town softball team has never even come close to having a winning season. Until now.
Rachel Flood has snuck back into town after leaving behind a trail of chaos nine years prior. She's here to make amends, but nobody wants to hear it, especially her mother, Laverna. But with the help of a local boy named Jake and a little soul searching, she just might make things right.
In the spirit of Empire Falls and A League of Their Own, with the caustic wit of Where'd You Go, Bernadette thrown in for good measure, Richard Fifield's hilarious and heartwarming debut will have you laughing through tears.

By chapter 3 I wanted to shoot myself!
The characters are gross, none with any qualities I could remotely care about or root for. The story jumps around so much I get lost and find myself asking which character the author is writing about now? The dialog was terrible...he said, she said, over and over until I wanted to shout for them all to shut up already. I regret the $4 spent on this one.

WOW! Just WOW.
This book is wonderful. If you have ever had a questionable past, loved a child that was not yours biologically and a little different, went to a bar, had hillbilly friends or just lived a life that's a little crazy...you might find some of yourself in here.
The characters are like people you know and maybe watch their hot mess of a life from a far while wanting to wrap them up and tell them "its going to be okay".
Don't miss this book, it will touch your heart and call to your soul. You will laugh, cry, cheer, and. miss this cast of characters when you are done.
Great story. Great narrator. its worth 2 credits but you will only spend one.

I was not wow'ed
I bought this book because of the number of reviews where people were so impressed with the book, I was not. It wasn't that interesting. The plot seemed very unlikely. Some characters were underdeveloped but it seemed like we were supposed to have strong feelings for them.
I wouldn't recommend this book to a friend, or an enemy. I was disappointed, but I did finish the book.

I loved this book! The characters were real characters...full of life. It's funny, serious, sad, happy - everything I want in a book. It's a great story to be read and the reader was a perfect match for this book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is in recovery or knows someone who is. It gives an honest view of AA and how it works.

It was okay-ish until the end
Okay. I almost stopped listening to this book numerous times. The characters seemed outlandishly awful and foul mouthed, and I am not someone who is offended by swearing at all, it just seemed unnecessarily over the top. Then, at about the middle of the book, things finally started going in the right direction, and it wasn't until the last 30 minutes of the book that I officially said screw this. This contains spoilers, so stop reading if you still want to listen to this or care about spoilers.
As a writer, I understand why the author did what he did, but I still hate it. It makes the entire character feel like a cheap plot twist, because I knew where this was going to end the moment the hunting trip came up. I just sat there and waited for what I knew was coming. I know that it adds symmetry, but it ruined any redeeming elements that the book had in my opinion. I am well aware that loss and crappy things really happen, but if I am going to put myself through that I require a better novel. Fifield is a good writer, but I really hated the book.

Not the ending I was excepting
Not the ending I was excepting until it was too late.
It was an awesome book, amazing characters, at least most of them. So many lessons learned, character growths, friendships created, and families fortified.
This is a perfect example of using religion to discriminate, isolate, and persecute, instead of welcoming and accepting everyone. It’s sad, but the reality is that in in 2016 there are still backwards, ignorant, hypocrites among us.
Red Mabel and Laverna cracked me up. Rachel finally came full circle and forged new friends and family.
NO SPOILERS as it’s too emotional. It’s full of laughs and cries. A MUST READ.
