Story
I began to suspect something was wrong with the gothic building when its family fled in the middle of the night, the children screaming, the mother crying. They never came back to pack up their furniture. A new occupant, Anna, has just moved in. I paid her a visit to warn her about the building. I didn't expect us to become friends, but we did. And now that Marwick House is waking up, she's asked me to stay with her. I never intended to become involved with the building or its vengeful, dead inhabitant. But now I have to save Anna.

Sure, the building hasn't been inhabited in 40 years and vines strangle the age-stained walls, but Guy is convinced he can clean it up and sell it. He'd be crazy to turn down free money. Right? The house is hours from any other habitation, and Guy can't get phone reception in the old building. He decides to camp there while he does repairs. Surely nothing too bad can happen in the space of a week. But there's a reason no one lives in Rookward House, and the dilapidated rooms aren't as empty as they seem....

Publisher's Summary
When their mother is hospitalized, Tara and Kyle are sent to stay with their only remaining relatives, their grandparents.
It's their first time meeting May and Peter Folcroft. The elderly couple seem friendly at first, and the house, hidden in the base of the mountains, is full of nooks to explore.
But strange things keep happening. The swing moves on its own. Peter paces around the house late at night and seems obsessed with the lake where his sister drowned. Doors slam and curtains shift when no one is inside. And one room is kept permanently locked.
When a storm cuts the phone line - their only contact with the outside world - Tara and Kyle must find a way to protect themselves from their increasingly erratic grandparents...and from the ghosts that inhabit the Folcrofts' house.

An extremely well-executed take on the familiar
Right off the bat, you know something is up with the grandparents of these kids, and they do too. Though they try to accept it all and fit in, small things begin to occur to them (some of which, admittedly, didn't occur to me) and they begin to question more than accept.
Several times during the story, you're thrown a slight curve and wonder if what you "know" is really it or if there is more. There's almost always more, and there's several times during the tale that you'll likely be creeped out or in suspense.
More impressively, I didn't find any of the suspensful or "scary" moments to be derived from any of the usual cheap tricks that tend to dominate stories like these. The author really put in work to craft situations that had you just as confused and concerned as our poor little protagonists.
I felt the narrator did a great job here as well. Pleasant accent that wasn't hard (for this American) to understand and added to the atmosphere of the story.
I'd definitely recommend this book and will look for more from both this author and narrator.

Not Coates Best Work but Still Good
Any additional comments?
I am a big Darcy Coates fan and have read all of her books. This one isn't quite on par with some of her other books, The Haunting of Gillespie House and The Haunting of Blackwood House are probably my two favorites by her. If you enjoy haunted house, ghost stories that are usually not too violent or too gory, you can't go wrong with any book by Darcy Coates.

It was a very enjoyable ghost story, if you like ghost stories. I enjoyed the reader very much! I liked it even more because they didn't use bad words. It was something I would even let my 12 year old listen to. It is worth a try if you are looking for a great story with enjoyable language. It is so hard to find that now a days. It was really nice. Proof that you don't have to have foul language to be an excellent book. I hope more people take a chance on this book! I hope this author continues to write more like this one.

Any additional comments?
I enjoyed this book and found the main characters, the siblings to be likeable and interesting and I cared about their outcome. The author did a great job of keeping me guessing about the outcome, there was a lot of information that came at the last 1/4 of the book that really put it all together very well for me.

Wow, Did Not See That Coming!
The Folcroft Ghosts starts off pretty slow in my opinion, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it especially since I don't typically like British settings or narrators BUT it had me hooked in the first quarter. There was something really creepy about the story and I just had a sense it was going to be a good one so I kept on and I'm really glad I did! The story doesn't completely make sense until the last quarter of the book so push on, don't get frustrated with it! The best part is being kept in the dark as far as the family's' secrets go. It was a really crazy ending and I did NOT see it coming. The narrator was actually very entertaining and she did a great job with all of the tones and she really set the mood for each character. Well done! I would read this again.

Great Book
No spoilers here. if you're looking for a book that has a great plot, interesting twist and language you don't mind your younger kids hearing then this is the book.
An easy book to follow. Good character build up. Plot that is somewhat relatable, to a point ha.

Confused
I'm really not sure what to make of this. It's not scary at all which is disappointing for a book in the 'horror' category. It desperately wants to be frightening, and it really, really tires, but it fails miserably. The characters are okay but you don't find yourself feeling particularly enamored with any of them. I'm also not sure where this book is supposed to be set. The narrator is British but the language used makes it seem like the book is set in another country. For example we don't have bears or cougars in the UK. On the topic of the narrator I have to say she isn't the best. Her voice is clear but her reading style is horrible and the story is delivered in a weird mix of monotone and strange emphasis.

Much like the film The Visit
So much like the film The Visit that I wonder if one or the other was deeply borrowed from or an adaptation of whichever came first (which I'm assuming was the book).
I enjoyed the first third or so of the book, the writing was okay, if a little meandering in places, and I was eager to see what was going to happen. When the big reveal came, though, like a lot of unfortunate modern horrors it descended into a plot that was absurd and bizarre rather than scary or exciting.
There's a lot of points that make the story a bit jarring after the first third and the action scenes stumble over themselves. Lost its way a bit. Got a bit silly.
Better haunted house scenario than a lot of books in which the family could easily have moved out or escaped the situation. But, saying that, the story would have been far more interesting and chilling if the ghosts were removed altogether.

Cosy domestic horror, no major scares here!
Pleasant enough book to pass the time but not outstanding. Good twist that I didn't entirely see coming, although there were some hints. No serious chills. Narrator was good and I don't think this was on her, but the character of the younger brother seemed much younger than his stated age in the novel. If I'd guessed I would have said 10 by the performance & how his character was written but apparently was 12 and that really made it a little harder for me to buy into it all. Just didn't ring true of a boy of that age. Still enjoyable though, and I will still happily read the rest of Coates' blacklist when I want a cosy ghost story with light shivers.
