Generations of dogs have been labeled training lemons for requiring actual motivation when all along they were perfectly normal. Numerous other completely and utterly normal dogs have been branded as canine misfits simply because they grew up to act like dogs. Barking, chewing, sniffing, licking, jumping up, and occasionally (just like people) having arguments are as normal and natural for dogs as wagging tails and burying bones.

Publisher's Summary
In this pathbreaking guide, two of the world’s most popular and trusted pet care advocates reveal new science to teach us how to delay aging and provide a long, happy, healthy life for our canine companions.
Like their human counterparts, dogs have been getting sicker and dying prematurely over the past few decades. Why? Scientists are beginning to understand that the chronic diseases afflicting humans - cancer, obesity, diabetes, organ degeneration, and autoimmune disorders - also beset canines. As a result, our beloved companions are vexed with preventable health problems throughout much of their lives and suffer shorter life spans. Because our pets can’t make health and lifestyle decisions for themselves, it’s up to pet parents to make smart, science-backed choices for lasting vitality and health.
The Forever Dog gives us the practical, proven tools to protect our loyal four-legged companions. Rodney Habib and Karen Becker, DVM, globetrotted (pre-pandemic) to galvanize the best wisdom from top geneticists, microbiologists, and longevity researchers; they also interviewed people whose dogs have lived into their 20s and even 30s. The result is this unprecedented and comprehensive guide, filled with surprising information, invaluable advice, and inspiring stories about dogs and the people who love them.
The Forever Dog prescriptive plan focuses on diet and nutrition, movement, environmental exposures, and stress reduction, and can be tailored to the genetic predisposition of particular breeds or mixes. The authors discuss various types of food - including what the commercial manufacturers don’t want us to know - and offer recipes, easy solutions, and tips for making sure our dogs obtain the nutrients they need. Habib and Dr. Becker also explore how external factors we often don’t think about can greatly affect a dog’s overall health and well-being, from everyday insults to the body and its physiology, to the role our own lifestyles and our vets’ choices play. Indeed, the health equation works both ways and can travel “up the leash”.
Medical breakthroughs have expanded our choices for canine health - if you know what they are. This definitive dog-care guide empowers us with the knowledge we need to make wise choices and to keep our dogs healthy and happy for years to come.

Every dog owner needs to listen to this!
I just finished reading The Forever Dog (actually I cheated and listened to the audiobook. 😁) I’ll give it 5 stars! I still think every dog owner should read it. I learned a lot and it made me think about my own health. It’s packed with so much information and different strategies to help our dogs live longer. It even made #1 New York bestsellers list. It’s the first dog health book that ever made the list and they were on the top! I’ve been following Dr. Becker and Rodney Habib for years and I know they put their heart and soul into this book. They truly want to make an impact in the lives of pets the way I do. ❤️

Recommend but the physical book is probably best
Yes, I recommend this book. As a raw feeder for nearly 10 years I am long familiar with Dr.Becker and Rodney Habib and while I haven’t always agreed with them completely they have been some of the biggest and most visible proponents of fresh food diets for cats and dogs and their work is highly commendable. I really liked how they emphasize that each step, no matter how small, we can make can improve our pets health. While naysayers of fresh food diets complain that these diets are always outrageous in cost (which they can be but is not always the case) some raw advocates on the other hand struggle to admit that fresh foods are not always financially accessible to some pet parents. This book gives tips for improving the diet on every level, even when no change can be made to the base diet. So bravo for that. They also discuss how other factors like exercise, stress (both environmental and mental), and genetics can play just as important roles in our pets health as diet. One thing I would critique however is that for some it may seem like an overwhelming amount of information for example the chapters on potential household toxins and the one on supplements may seem like a huge information dump because it does to me and I am not new to that information. Just remember you don’t have to go buy every supplement in the world, and you don’t have to dump every potential toxic cleaner in your home. Just sit down and maybe think of one or two small changes that can be made, like eliminating air fresheners. Maybe try one supplement or maybe none if your dog doesn’t have targeted needs, they are only suggestions.
Last note, I recommend getting the physical book instead of the audiobook version like I did because apparently there are a lot of graphics in this book and while you can go to a separate website to view them who wants to have to do that?

Empowering
I converted from pricey store bought to exclusively homemade food. I’d research but never could feel totally confident that I was providing my dogs with the appropriate and nutritious food. Thanks to The Forever Dog book, I learned so much and feel confident about what I can feed to my dogs. I lost my 17 year old rescue dog in 2020 and felt it was the prescription medicine that brought his untimely passing. This book is a great reference for keeping our dogs healthy with nutrition, exercise, oral care, avoiding toxins, and proper brain stimulation. I cannot thank you enough for releasing this book.

This book is so full of wonderful important information but practically unlistenable due to the reader. She is so monotone and puts a period after every other word. I only got through it by speeding the playback up. Please don’t let her read any more books for Audible.
