Story
Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

In 1955, Look magazine called Phenix City, Alabama, "The Wickedest City in America". But even that may have been an understatement. It was a stew of organized crime and corruption, run by a machine that dealt with complaints forcefully and with dispatch. No one dared cross them - no one even tried. And then the machine killed the wrong man.

Publisher's Summary
Thirty-six years ago, a nameless black man wandered into Jericho, Mississippi, with nothing but the clothes on his back and a pair of paratrooper boots. Less than two days later, he was accused of rape and murder, hunted down by a self-appointed posse, and lynched. Now evidence has surfaced of his innocence, and county sheriff Quinn Colson sets out not only to identify the stranger's remains, but to charge those responsible for the lynching. As he starts to uncover old lies and dirty secrets, though, he runs up against fierce opposition from those with the most to lose - and they can play dirty themselves. Soon Colson will find himself accused of terrible crimes, and the worst part is, the accusations just might stick. As the two investigations come to a head, it is anybody's guess who will prevail - or even come out of it alive.

not sure if I'll do another
Good knowledge of the south, good dialect. I actually grew weary of the story. and the language was AWFUL. now it may be that thugs actually speak this way, but too much. Also, it is unrealistic to imagine that kind of whoring and drugging and corruption in a small town

Forsaken
This story was too long but ended too soon. The characters were well developed and there was plenty of action. I didnot like the sections that flipped back 40 years. It took a while to identify this was a flashback as many of the characters had a role in the flashback era as well as the current times. I have listened to Ace Atkins books he wrote under the Spenser detective series for Robert Parkers's estate and they are excellent. I will continue with those and maybe I will try another Quinn Colsen story but not for a while

RANGER Quinn
What made the experience of listening to The Forsaken the most enjoyable?
Since I have started with book one of this series, I was able to enjoy the characters by having known the history of the series. Great story line not dominated by one or two characters.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Forsaken?
As I have mentioned, the storylines while lending each character and events is equally enjoyable throughout the entire book. Quinn and his Father Jason, first meeting in countless years was interesting and left unmentioned in previous books.
Have you listened to any of Brian D'Arcy James’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Nice job with his different voices used for each character. Nice listen.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The RANGER's Law and his chief Deputy!
Any additional comments?
This would make a great mini series... Ace Atkins is a must listen.

Families are never uncomplicated.
The one where we get to meet Quinn's father. Learn more about Tibbahah country and it's troubled past. And Get an education in how nothing to do with family is ever uncomplicated. The dialogue , plot, and Characterization are as ever first rate. I discovered Ace Atkins writing through his continuation of the Spenser series . I have been astonished at how he keeps 2 such different distinct mileau so authentic. The mark of a real pro and great writer. Five Stars all day long.
