Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author Penelope Sky releases her first sexy fantasy romance under the name Penelope Barsetti.

Ivory: I see him watch me. Everywhere I go - he follows. He’s one of my father’s guards at the castle. Goes by the name Mastodon. There’s something about him I don’t like, but my warnings are never taken seriously. But I bet if my brother voiced the same concerns that would be no issue…just because he has balls and I don’t.

Well, I have bigger balls than he ever will.

When I leave for the Capital, Mastodon escorts me. And just as I feared, he kills my guards and captures me. At least he tries to capture me. There’s a lot of running and chasing. I land an arrow right in his neck, but it does nothing. It’s like he doesn’t even feel it.

He takes me into a cavern, and we descend deep underground - to the Bottom of the Cliffs. Then he tells me why he’s doing this. Because my family took everything from him - and now he’s about to do the same.

Mastodon: Her father murdered mine then raped my mother - and forced me to watch. Then he pushed us over the cliff - to our deaths. But we survived - and now we’re ready for revenge. She’s the key to that. After she helps us get what we need, I’ll hang her by her pretty neck and watch her take her last breath.

I steal her from Delacroix - and of course, she fights me the whole way. Not just with her fists, but her mouth too. If she wasn’t my pawn, I might actually like her. When I hand her over to my mother, I realize she has far more sinister plans. She tells me to do exactly what her father did - and force her.

That’s not the kind of man I am, so the answer is no. But then she asks Geralt - the most barbaric man I’ve ever met. So I volunteer - because I know she’d rather it be me than anyone else.

Pathetic Attempt

The Prolog was shockingly disgusting enough but could have been realistic. However the following sentences were destroyed by every other word being fuck. She said it not me. After 15 minutes past the prolog I realized the writer had zero talent of expression without the use of fuck every other word which was sad in a way because I believe the premise could have been some pretty good story telling.
Rewrite it using descriptive words not fuck and betcha it’s a million seller! Returning it to Amazon.

this book is the definition of misogyny

this book starts with brutal rape, no warning. narrator is so bad there is no way to enjoy the book. absolute trash.

I finished the book so I could accurately review how bad this book is. The author has no idea what consent is, nor do they have any idea what chemistry is. This alone is bad, but the main character Ivory is described as having a child like body and acts like one. There is no plot, no character development, and some of the worst written spice scenes I've ever read. YA spicy scenes are better than this.

do not buy it is not worth it

Just no!

I’ve read many books from this author and normally love her but this is the worst thing ever. Absolutely no substance to the characters or story. Ivory is a whiny badmouth little brat that I couldn’t even begin to care for. There’s absolutely no world building so I had no visual of where they were at. And don’t get me started on the narrators. The female is horrible. Sounds like a snotty little 12 year old with a slight east coast accent. Just so so wrong for this. I couldn’t get past her voice. The male sounds like he could care less about anything. Way too nonchalant and timid to be this tough guy making hard decisions. The whole thing is a mess and can’t even get past the first couple of hours. Don’t waste a credit.

I've been Cliffhanged

That ending. Once again, a book ends midway through booking. Shame on me, dear reader, because I'll definitely be downloading the next one. In the beginning, I didn't understand the review hype (I thought you all betrayed me). It was a graphic and disturbing start, then we got introduced to our girl, and she's annoying and selfish. The type you want bad things to happen to just so she'll grow some sense through experience. Thankfully, character development saved the day, and I grew to like her. This book is an odd combo of modern language (lots of swearing) in a medieval type society, which I initially found off putting, but eventually, I got used to. Next, it turned into sex all the time. Gratuitous, possibly to the point of boring. But fear not! In between sex scenes we have a great start to world building and some serious machinations. There are characters you love to hate and plot twists and turns that reeled me in. By the cruel ending, I was hooked.

wow. this sucked.

DNF. After the first 10 chapters I wondered what the plot was. Basically sex every single chapter. I have never ever complained about smut in a book, but this was ridiculous because there was literally no plot the whole time. And it was so incredibly rushed, the chemistry, the not so twisty twists, the action. One minute things are fine, the next their life is in peril. I honestly hated the characters too. Ivory was portrayed as a bad ass who could use a bow and sword, but had no clue about how to throw a basic punch? She acted entitled and snobbish constantly and Huntly was a wet blanket character. I rarely ever leave bad reviews, and save them for the worst of the worst. I read most of the reviews before buying this book too but I don't think any of the people that commented read the same book as me. Don't waste your time or money. With all of that said, the narrator was not great either. her inflections and how she portrayed the character was equally lacking and hard to listen to.

Sorry but no

Not her best work. I was upset about the brutal rape which started the book. Then we have modern slang in ancient tale. It just kind of reminded me of a b to c movie.
I trusted the writer and the reader and felt let down. This book was just not my cup of tea.

Absolutely awesome

What can I say? What a story! The environment that the author created was a fantastic realm that I could imagine actually existed. The strength of both lead characters AND the Queen was so well done that I look around & expect to see them . The plot is so well designed, dribbling out shocking facts at just the appropriate times, that I am as shocked as the characters. I want to write like this. How did Ms. Barsetti create such an environment, characters, situations ? What an imagination!
I despise the Queen but can’t hate her. I understand her quest for vengeance. Brother Ian although a strong person has a weak presentation & I hope he grows some balls soon.
The evil side characters are unbelievable until that story weaves them into reality. I felt the cold, the heat, the fear, the passion in my bones. It’s the most unforgettable sensations. I’ve read/listened to a 100+ stories of sci fi/romance but usually forget them after I buy my next book. I can’t forget this one. It has become part of my soul. I hate cliffhangers but I’ll forgive the author on this one. I’m eager to know what’s happened to Ivory, to follow Huntley to The Teeth.
Uh, do I recommend this book? If you haven’t figured that out by now, you don’t deserve this book.

I feel like an addict right now craving the next book!!

I’m a huge fan of Penelope so I didn’t even read the reviews before I purchased. Don’t let any of the negative reviews fool you this book had me on edge the entire time. There are so many twists and turns, situations that seem impossible to get out of, and the creatures and action and suspense!!!!! I can’t wait for the second book I’m obsessed!! The narrators performance was amazing as always.
