Accidentally murdered by a cleric in another universe during a botched resurrection, Arnold, a semi-pro gamer, wakes upon an altar to find himself incarnated into the overweight body of a farmer who could have been his fatter twin. He’s not the hero. He’s not the villain. He’s certainly not the chosen one who is there to save the world. He’s a clerical error. It could be a bad joke, but apparently, it happens so often that they have a standard procedure for returning you.

Publisher's Summary
The battlefield realm: a realm where sects rise and fall. Where the ground trembles under the feet of fighters from the higher realms. Where riches are gained and empires lost.
This is where Erik and Rugrat must go, if they want to increase their strength and the strength of Alva.
They say that fortune favors the bold. This is the ten realms. To the victor go the spoils. The fourth realm will change their lives...or end them.

Good book - bad audio recording
I really like this book - it’s one of my favorites from the rest of the series. I read this book before it was released to Audible. Who ever did the mixing/recording should be fired. The constant shifting from muffled to clear is annoying and takes away from the story. I like the narrator - I don’t remember this issue with the previous books. So I really hope they fix the problem. People are paying for a quality product.
The fourth realm has a lot of action and a fairly large addition to Alva. There is just a lot that happens in this book. I would recommend reading this book versus listening to it. I wish I could have given this book a 5 star rating but the audio is just too messed up. You can listen to the story just fine but it’s annoying.

woof. this book needs work.
this series has so much potential but it feels like a first draft. did an editor even read it? i've gotten through the first three and they all have similar issues but book four is really rough. the language is unbelievably simple and repetitive.
Some sections read like this:
"the enemy flew up into the sky. a big spell scroll went off in the sky, filling the sky with ice. Ice coated the mounts' wings and they fell from the sky."
"she drew in power to her body. her body glowed with red power. red tendrils of power twisted around her arm. the tendrils flew forward and the power exploded."
"the dungeon boss stood up out of its chair. the dungeon core glowed, pouring mana into the dungeon. 'there's the dungeon core! if we get that, we can control the dungeon,' Rugrat said. they needed to control this dungeon to help improve alva dungeon."
other problems include the number of times the word "concoction" is used, when the reader forgets how to say "trebuchet", every time Matt gets an English accent mid sentence(he's Canadian...), whenever someone from the ten realms uses an earth saying, and everything about the foundation school.
it's so cringe worthy that i can't bring myself to finish the series.

Same...
Michael chatfield has an amazing abilty to make magical new worlds.. then make them boring. Let me explain. First let me say he is a great author, and one of my favorites. I have noticed when he starts a new series it is always worth buying, always a great read, you can read it over and over. With that said it never evolves. After the first book its the same no surprises nothing new. If you read the first couple of books in this series this book is more of the same.next books will be the same too. It not a bad book just more of the first. Emerilia was the same. By the end of that series I just wanted the story to end. Its sad but this story is turning out the same way.

This book has the least amount of Extra side stuff
If you were on the fence after reading the last book I promise this one delivers an amazing main story line!
The 4th realm is my absolute favorite book in the series because it is super action packed and you can really feel the struggle Eric and Rugrat have to go through to win the day and when they think there out of it another thing just falls on them as they try and carve out a piece of the 4th realm to call their own!!
This book also has a VERY LOW amount of extra side characters who are either giving office reports about things you don't care about or random wars about random people who don't matter.
Now there is SOME of that but it is really toned down in this one and focuses on Eric and Rugrat taking over and starting their own city!!! It is the next book, the 5th Realm that you gotta struggle through because of all the side stuff.

Hampered by rehashing and repetitiveness
While Michael Chatfield's writing style is very good, he seems to have lengthened the novel's word volume by significantly slowing the pace of the series movement. While one of the strength's of this series is the author's ability to craft interesting secondary characters along their way through the realms using well-written character development, it often seems that the intent for this was to add past contacts in which to act as revisiting points to re-explain various story segments to each of these secondary characters as a means to lengthen the book. These sections involve rehashing previous adventures, to giving repetitive retelling of pep talks to military, crafting, mercantile and trade contacts located in desperate sections in the 4 realms.
Also, while the 4th realm was described as the Battle Realm, this book only had them battling one military adversary, albeit a large and dangerous one. Afterward, a lot of the book was taken up with dungeon delving to build up the MCs and Alva's military strengths and rebuilding an acquired destroyed capital to increase the ability to gain more resources; especially, meritorious-minded recruits for Alva's personnel resources (and, presumably, to add even more rehash contacts for subsequent repetitive retelling).
It is still a worthy listen, not in small part given to Todd Menesses' excellent narrating skills.

Rugrat and Erik, but not really.
First the good: The narrator did a good job, Chatfield delivered on more world building, and you basically got more of what you listened to in books 1-3 with a MAJOR caveat.
The not so good: The fourth realm is known as the battlefield realm, and as such you would expect, well, lots of battles! and you get that, sort of. I get the impression that the author wanted to do a battle from the stand point of Erik and Rugrat as commanders rather than fighters. assuming that was the intent, then Chatfield surely missed the mark. Almost all of the fighting is done by other characters in the book, with very little "command overview" from the protagonists. Instead what we got were 20-30 minute battle scenes with characters we know little to nothing about. Characters introduce a few chapters ago that we know nothing about, or could care less about get a 30 minute battle scene, then we never really hear from them again. It LITERALLY got so BAD, that Chatfield just started calling people sword guy 1 or the archer during battle scenes. and I dont mean, just kind of sprinkling the rando bad guy here or there... entire battles are waged while fighting archer a, or sword guy b... it's just lazy writing. what makes it worse is there are Sooooo many battle that you have to listen through 20+ battles from the viewpoint of 40+ different characters that were either introduced this book with not background, or from characters that you could care less about. Rugrat and Erik make up for like 5% of the fighting scenes at best.
lastly, either I lost track of the plethora of different inconsequential characters in this series(which isnentirely possible), or Chatfield just randomly decided to start using western names for "good guy" fighters which was so out of place that it was immersion breaking. Like are they from earth too? Did I just forget about Brian because he was only mentioned 2-3 times?
*********very slight spoiler about MC level*******
anyways, I feel like Chatfield really dropped the ball on this, he could of had Rugrat and Erik fight their way through the 4th realm, but instead he just power levels Erik and Rugrat to like level 60 for doing nothing... Very disappointing!

It's alright
This book should be a 3.5 supplemental book to the realms. Minor spoiler, you only really get Erik and Rugrat for about 4 hours total in the book. EVERYTHING else (20 hours ish ) is about the people of Alva Dungeon. Also we had some audio issues , but easy to overlook. The audio issues seem to stem from Stereo to Mono going in and out. It does NOT do it all the time.
I really wanted a Erik and Rugrat book.

Good but losing focus
The narrator did a wonderful job, but the audio quality was lower than in the previous recordings, and varied in tone and quality inn sudden and distracting jumps.
The story was fine, a continuation, more of the same. But it begins to feel a little unfocused and you get fewer and fewer endearing moments with the main characters. I started to feel my mind wandering a bit occasionally, which did not happen in the previous books.
Still, it's fun, enjoyable tactical magical combat adventures and that's really what brought us through the first books!

Problem with audio
Great continuation of the story. Love these books, but there were a few problems with audio continuity that I haven't heard in the other book. The audio grain and clarity will change between chapter some times or even between sentences. This creates a break for the listener. Just be aware if that really bothers you. For me it wasn't a huge problem, this is still a great book and I would recommend the series as a whole to anyone.

Simply brilliant.
Another epic book in the serise, fantastic world building, incredible detailing and a vast array of characters, pleanty of depth and action which is to be expected from Eric and Rugrat.
The whole experience is brought to life with yet another flawless performance from the talented Todd Menesses.
highly recommended

Great storyline audio has its issues at parts
Great storyline however the audio is a bit choppy at parts sounds like they were stepping away or had to add audio edits using bad audio at parts

Excellent
I usually wait until I've finished a series before writing my reviews.
Books 1-5 in this series are excellent. Great character building and the narrator really brings everyone to life.
Books 6+, I'll never know.
The narrator changes and its hard to tell when a character is speaking or if it's the story being narrated.
Everything is the same. I couldn't finish book 6a (the shortest book in the series).
If you can accept not finishing a series and leaving on a high note, Books 1-5 are great.
If you want to listen to the entire series, listen to samples from Books 6 onwards to see if you fall asleep or not.
The story is still excellent but the narration completely kills it.
I can recommend the book, but I cant recommend the series as a whole.

Wonderful story, not the best audio
The audio changes in tone and quality at times, which was really disruptive to me.

good story
I like the story a lot but the performance of the narrator was patchy in the way that some words are mispronounced or botched
for example when he says traders it sounds like traitors and vice versa, sects sounds like he says s*x there is also many moments where the audio quality becomes really bad for a sentance and then goes back to becoming really good which it mostly is.

The book is very good, but the audio changes quality from time to time. That can be a bit annoying in action areas

It just gets better and better
I’m addicted to these books. It is seriously one of the best series I’ve ever seen. Not going to spoil anything. Go pick up book 1 and go! You won’t regret it. Except if you can’t handle fart humor. :p

Weird voice narrating in the middle of the book
There is some weird voice speaking in between the narrator starting at the siege chapter. Not sure that is my speaker fault or it is the recording fault

some recordings problems but good book
don't know if it was my download but some of the sentences would change in sound quality like they changed microphones then once they finished the sentences it would change back. but other than that a good carry on from the other books

Good story but narrator sounded to far away
About half way through the book the narrator sound like he was speaking to far away and then suddenly but to normal, maybe he needs to revisit this one to fix it

Terrible Editing but good story
When you listen you will notice every edit thats been done due to tue terrible quality of the recorded edits. Im assuming that the bad edit job is the reason for the 1.4gb download when the book is only 20+ hours long, ive listened to books over 50 hours and they done reach more that 600-800mb...
other than that the story pretty much continues on as you would expect from last books

just as good as the ones before it
more of what you've come to love from this series, giving you deeper attachments to the characters and universe, also some solid plot developments
