Publisher's Summary

A lovely widow plans to marry a French count in this historical romance by bestselling author Marion Chesney

It was true. The lovely young widow Lady Charteris - Delphine to her friends - had agreed to abide by her parents' wishes and marry the Comte Saint-Pierre. Delphine's parents had long since died in the Terror, but when she learned of their wishes for her, she believed it her duty to respect their wishes. Delphine would marry, but it would be a marriage in name only.

But when Delphine saw Jules Saint-Pierre, she got the shock of her life: he was the same man she had seen juggling in the streets at a local fair. What was he doing as the Comte Saint-Pierre? Was he posing? Had she made some terrible mistake?

Bait and switch

Thought we were getting a strong, intelligent heroine with an interesting story line. But very quickly she turns into a nagging, spoiled, petulant shrew. Also, Chesney describes her characters with the same physical characters in many of her books.

Very enjoyable romance!

This was a very enjoyable romance. It had some historical references to the French Revolution. What I appreciated the most was that it didn’t get smutty like most of the romances do. A suggestion of what is happening is sufficient. I don’t need all the details. It detracts from the story. I would highly recommend this book and author! I have listened to several of her other books and they’re always light and fun. The narrator is great. I love her accent! She helps make the listen!

What an incredibly stupid story

I don’t expect regency romances to break molds or anything, but they shouldn’t bore the snot out of you, either. This one was incredibly contrived and stupid. The only thing that really stood out was how aggravating the protagonist was. Ugh

hard to love a fishwife

really struggled with the main heroine in this story. half the time she's yelling at him treating him like a two-year-old and then all of a sudden we're supposed to be madly in love?

Great Read

The very young widow Delphine had been in a secure and comfortable marriage. After her husband’s death, she learns about her parents death and their betrothal for her. She agrees to marry a stranger based on their instructions and never laid eyes on him until after the wedding. Through their marriage there is a serious of unfortunate events that doesn’t lend her to the comfort and security of her first marriage. She must get out of her comfort zone with this new husband. Typical Beaton humor in this Rom-Com.

Historical,romantic, and fast moving.

The narrator was very good. Enjoyed the many different characters. It is set in one of histories bloodiest and tragic times, without being explicit.

Delphine

This is a great story, but beware the main character. She drove me crazy the whole time. Without spoiling too much, she is quite sheltered and spoiled, which led her to create problems for herself out of nothing. But, she does improve by the end.

frustrating

the implausibility of the premise of this book made the first half extremely frustrating. after that the female protagonist becomes extremely whiny and complaining. the only character that is really likeable is the Jule's servant. the reader was really good though.

One of Her Best

I have read or listened to many of the author’s books over the years, with varying degrees of pleasure. Some of her books have kind of a weird, underlying tone that for me didn’t work. But this book is to me her best. The story is interesting and believable. The h and h likable. The villains not too villainous. And in the end, it all works out for the best. And the narration is absolutely spot on. There were some “warm” spots, but I skipped over those and of course nothing was lacking in translation. Overall, highly recommend this best of the best of Ms. Beaton.
