The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

An intense psychological thriller for fans of I Am Watching You, The Luckiest Girl Alive, and All the Missing Girls. Two missing girls. Thirteen years apart. Olivia Shaw has been missing since last Tuesday. She was last seen outside the entrance of her elementary school in Hunts Point wearing a white spring jacket, blue jeans, and pink boots. I force myself to look at the face in the photo, into her slightly smudged features, and I can't bring myself to move. Olivia Shaw could be my mirror image, rewound to 13 years ago.

She thought she could trust Emma, her new friend, to look after her little boy. After all, Emma’s a kindred spirit - someone Sophie was sure she could bare her soul to, despite the village rumours. But Sophie can’t shake the feeling that she’s made an unforgivable mistake and now her whole family is in danger.
Because how well does she know Emma, really? Should she have trusted her at all?

Good psychological suspense
I enjoyed this novel and found the characters to be interesting and the plot riveting. The story is told in a somewhat disjointed way that jumps back and forward in time- not just from present to past, but also within chapters, where something is mentioned and then expanded on in a later chapter, so the reader will find it important to pay close attention to what is said in order not to miss important plot points. The narration was good. The suspense built up in a way that made me want to keep listening to the very end. Overall, a well-done suspense novel that focuses on character development and plot, rather than police procedural. Recommended.

Intense
It's now 3 A.M. and I just finished this book. I simply couldn't stop listening to it. I wish I could give it more than five stars.
'The Friend' is an exercise in contradictions... love and hate, friendship and enmity, truth and less, trust and dear... all blending together until the inevitable explosion.
The characters were very well written and got into my head and heart. The ending was something I didn't expect, but was perfect.
The narration was very well done, you could hear the emotions in each character.
I'll definitely be looking for more from this author.

Better than her first novel!
Teresa Driscoll's first novel titled I Am Watching You earned 2 stars, so I decided to give her a second chance with THE FRIEND. THE FRIEND is better but still not very good. Like her first novel the author writes this in the first person of the protagonist. Like her first novel the protagonist here does lots and lots of navel gazing in telling the story. What saves THE FRIEND is the conclusion which brings the story together and almost makes the 7 hours of boredom worthwhile. In any case I'm finished with author Teresa Driscoll.

Love the ending!
The narration was hurried and staccato throughout most of this book - especially in the beginning. I slowed it down, but then it dragged. The story itself was okay. Nothing breathtaking. It kind of meandered and I got distracted a lot and had to refocus. Not sure if that was the book’s fault or mine. The best part, by far, was the end. Just desserts.

Yeah, I should have purchased the physical copy
so, this is not my usual genre but after 'i am watching you ' I immediately purchased 'the friend '... where to begin?
story is fantastic, kept me hooked and guessing throughout ... and I didn't suss it... fantastic writing.
however
I wish I had read this rather than chosen the Audible version... I had the Audible version of I Am Watching You and loved it however the choice of narrator for The Friend did not work for me.
The narration of the story is excellent, well paced but what let it down for me personally were the male voices and the accents ( unessacary accents for certain characters I think).
This may just be me... it may just be people who listened to the previous book.
This is my only negative, and it's not a negative really... it's a niggle... I do wish I had physically read this but I will not be put off an audiobook choice of mine is narrated by Henrietta Meire... all in all I enjoyed this

Another great book from Teresa Driscoll
After listening to "I am Watching You" I have been waiting for this new book by the same author. It did not disappoint. There were some commonalities but I'm pleased to say that it is a completely fresh story full of intrigue and suspense.
The police investigation in this story plays only a small part, the story is almost all about Sophie and her family who moved from London to the rural South West where they meet Emma (the friend). The suspense is largely delivered by the use of multiple time frames. There are so many different time frames towards the end of the book, jumping back and forth that it took some concentration. The final epilogue tied up all the loose ends in a very satisfactory way.
Luckily there was a lot more to the story than they give away in the official trailer. It is not all about the girl on the train trying to rush back home, far from it.
I'm not sure I liked the narrator's voice much. It mostly sounded clipped and angry when I think she was really trying to convey a tone of distress.
In all, a good read/listen. I would recommend it.

Worst narration ever
Unfortunately I just couldn’t listen to this book. The narration is the worst I have ever experienced. Monotonous and spoken far too quickly. Listened to only about 15 minutes but I couldn’t bear any more. So difficult to understand and the more you notice the dreadful narration the more it bothers you. Such a shame as I thought the story was promising, and I have enjoyed other books by this author. Might buy the hard copy instead.

The Friend
This was the second book I have listened to by Teresa Driscoll & on the whole I enjoyed the story. I wasn’t so keen on the narrator, as I often found it hard to distinguish between Sophie & Emma’s voices. Also I’m not sure why the narrator gave the police woman & private investigator northern accents, as she wasn’t able to keep it going & sometimes I thought they sounded a bit Scottish. But, the pros outweigh the cons & this is a good story.
Onwards now to my next listen by this author.

Kept hoping the protagonist would die...
I love easy, brainless thrillers. But this was a struggle to get through. Awful, hysterical fever pitch narration. Predictable and ultimately boring plot. The main character was whiny, self-pitying, thick, annoying and made everything about her. Typically weak, one-dimensional male characters. The 'villain' was the only interesting character! Don't bother.
