Publisher's Summary

This omnibus contains the first three novels of the Frith Chronicles, all of which are also sold separately:

  • Book 1: Knightmare Arcanist
  • Book 2: Dread Pirate Arcanist
  • Book 3: Coliseum Arcanist

Volke Savan has always wanted to be an arcanist - someone who has bonded with a mystical creature and is capable of wielding magic. Phoenix arcanists can create fire and heal, hydra arcanists can create poison and recover from most injuries, and knightmare arcanists are masters of shadow and fear.

After bonding with a mystical creature, Volke travels to the mainland, fighting through pirates, tournaments, and dastardly scoundrels, all to follow in the footsteps of legendary swashbucklers and heroes alike.

Critic Reviews

"Knightmare Arcanist by Shami Stovall was rollicking good fun! Perfect for those who enjoy the Codex Alera series, the Homas Wildus series and the Harry Potter series. Stovall is quickly becoming a name I look for." (Seattle Book Review)

"Dread Pirate Arcanist was everything I had hoped it would be, and then some." (Coffee Pot Book Club)

"Building on the fantastic story and characters of the previous installments, Coliseum Arcanist is a brilliant continuation of the Frith Chronicles as well as a triumph in its own right." (ManyBooks)

A wonderful young adult adventure

The main character is a young gravedigger apprentice. His parents are long gone, one was a thief, the other a murderer. More than anything else, he wants to be an arcanist -- one bonded to a magical creature.

The main characters are likeable, the villains are annoying but not disastrously so, the magic is fun and magical, the action is fast paced. As I went through it, I thought I saw the arc of the whole series shaping up ... but instead, I only saw where the first book was going. That's all a good set-up for the second book, and then the third book. The action is consistently well done -- but there's a bit of YA convenience about various plots. Still, I enjoyed it.

Highly recommended.

Audio is a bit glitchy at times, but a good listen

The audio is a bit glitchy, super quiet at sometimes and super loud at others. But it is a good listen.

the characters are barely readable

the main character in general is not a good decision maker just in general will let you down alot. and the character Zacsus or whatever is the most insufferable character ever written I have never hated a character more. He is worse than even the villains in the story if the character wasn't in the book I would like this book a lot more.

patchy

I loved the books 1 through 3, and the reader was amazing. However, the narrator would constantly sound good and then suddenly be very loud, then suddenly very quiet. I keep my headphones at a set volume so I don't hurt my ears but it hurts when the narrator suddenly cuts in loud, almost shouting narrations.

I like the special effects for the combined voices of Vulc and Luthair.

Essentially everything was good, but the narrator needed to have a set volume and turn the gain down on whatever microphone he was using when shouting and turn it back up when speaking normally.

Huh...

it's a really good book, but I have so many issues with the choices the hero takes. there are so many things he could have done differently and gotten better outcomes.

audio issues

A fantastic story for fantasy fantatics and those with a sense of wanderlust. Loving the story and the migcal mystical animals and their bonds with arcanist and all the colorful, unique and sometimes dark places they visit. My one major issue, was with random audio issues. Certain things like, chapter titled were very loud as well as certain very brief characters. I had a hard time listening due to the audio book after book 1 being significantly quieter... It was frustrating at times but I finished the arc. I'm glad I did and I will go onto the next book hoping the audio issues have been resolved.

worth the 1 credit

I need two things from my Audible books.
1. an engaging story with a decently thought out magic system *check
2. an enjoyable listen by the Narator *Super Check

The other reviews are right about the sometimes lazy writing, but I think the mentor/mentee relations with the main make up well needed depth in the 3rd book.

This is a good book to listen while doing things and to rest too.

It's a story, I guess. Good deal for 1 credit

It's an alright story, but nothing special. It requires a little bit of suspense of belief due to plot armor and innefective antagonists. Other than that the story is just.... not super interesting. Perhaps the most interesting part is the banter between romantically interested parties, but even that is stale. The my opinion 'best girl' hardly makes any appearances either. Certain words are used far too often, and some concept naming could have done with a little more creativity.

I guess the biggest result of the writing is that... I really just don't care much about ANY of the characters. I'm actually contemplating not finishing the last 15 hours of the book, but... I'm cleaning the barn, so I may as well.

Authors...for the love of God...ur not in college anymore. you dont need to constantly stitch in overdone antagonists with Severely...Overtly overboard negative rhetoric beyond belief. unenjoyable and unrealistic...not how life works...when u meet one...beyond rare...you make sure to avoid them in future...so dont do fake behavior within books. stop ruining your own beautiful creations with overdone penciled in barely believable hatred/anger/negativity and allow us to enjoy your story. zaxis an easy example...lazy writing.
