The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

Until one day, something happens there that shakes Julie to the core, making her question everything she ever believed about her life, her marriage and even her sanity....

Returning for my credit
I really enjoyed The Escape Room and hoped to follow it with another from Goldin, but I absolutely cannot listen to this book one more minute. I’m maybe ten minutes in and if I have to continue to hear the narrators gasp for breath after every clause spoken I’m gonna go postal. And the pathologist sounds like a valley girl. What the hell. Just awful.

This is certainly not up to the quality of Goldin’s first book The Escape Room.
If you recently read Megan Goldin’s first book The Escape Room and are looking for another great read by the same author, this is NOT it. There is so many awful things wrong with this story that I myself could write a book. I will only name a few as to get my point across.
I am not sure which awful thing takes precedence because they are all equally damning to this train wreck called a book. One thing an audio book needs for it to be successful is a decent narrator. This book had two narrators and they were both without a doubt awful. To the point that the awful sound and cadence of their voice made my ears hurt. Two separate narrators and they both couldn’t pronounce simple words. An example being both female narrators pronunciation of the word “schedule”. They both continued to pronounce it as Shed-Wool. If listening to them both mispronounce simple words isn’t grating enough the gasping breaths they continuously took while reading a sentence had me wanting to scream and bang my head on a wall.
I am completely baffled at this story. It is without a doubt the worst book I have ever listened to. Normally I can find at least a couple positive things to say regarding a book, however this book I can’t. Not a single character is believable or well developed. I have listened to 1,000+ books on audible over the years and this is the only negative review I have written. This is truly and awful story and the ending is well.....so absolutely horrible. I can’t begin to describe what’s wrong with it. There’s no words to describe the torture.
Save your credit, do not buy this book!! Your ears will thank you. If you haven’t listened to The Escape Room by Megan Goldin, then spend your credit on that one because it’s definitely worth it and has amazing narration, where as the book...NOOOO!!!!

The performers mispronounced words frequently
The book was mostly engaging and interesting. Occasionally there were too many unnecessary details that did not add to the story (i.e., detailed description of what someone was eating) but I’m wondering if that speaks more to the fact that this book might be better when read vs. listened to. That being said, I’m not well versed in crime fiction. I’m mainly leaving this review to mention the awful performance. The main character Julie sounds robotic at times and both characters (Julie and Mel) mispronounce words frequently. There were mispronunciations of places (such as Boca Raton) but also of common words such as controversy, capsules, and weekend. I thought at first it was because the production was from Australia but as I listened to the book more I honestly wondered if they were using AI to do the performance. It was difficult to listen to and I almost stopped listening to the book altogether.

The narration - readers ARE THE WORST!!
I’ve listened to 100’s of audio books. The readers of the book are PAINFUL!! Vocal fry for the investor and she sounds like a valley girl. She sighs and stumbles over words. Pausing is off like she looses her place.
I can’t even tell if I like the story because the reading of it is so bad. She breaths out after every phrase.

Another Excellent Goldin Novel
I previously enjoyed The Night Swim and The Escape Room. I found this book equally as good. It kept me guessing all the way to the ebd. I look forward to reading another book by the author.
The book is 99% American English, but a few Australian English phrases slipped through editing. it was like an Easter egg hunt trying to find them.

Wow, what a surprise
There is a really stimulating storyline and I loved the alternative chapter representations of the two main characters. I fell in love with the voice of Julie, who read her piece perfectly. I suspected the outcome, but not until late into the book but I was never really sure of it until the very end. I'm looking out for further books by Megan.

Total disappointment
I really didn't enjoy this book. The narration was so annoying especially the voice of the little girl. I was constantly rolling my eyes, with the story line. I was so irritated by the way the author over described everything that wasn't nessasary to the story line. I found the ending such a disappointment, it had every chance to be a great double twist but no such luck.
