This collection of tales is for fans of ghost-story writer Mary Downing Hahn’s scary but not too scary books. Even the stories without actual ghosts are spooky. Each tale turns something ordinary - a pigeon, a white dress, a stranger on the bus, a puppet - into a sinister link to the supernatural. For the human characters, secrets from the past or careless behavior in the present can lead to serious trouble. All the stories have a young person as their central character, so all will resonate easily with young listeners who enjoy the eerie, the creepy, and the otherworldly.

Publisher's Summary
Jules' family moves into an old abandoned house. Her parents love it, but she's frightened and feels a sense of foreboding. When she sees a pale face in an upstairs window, she can't stop wondering about the eerie presence on the top floor - in a room with a locked door. Could it be someone who lived in the house a century earlier?
Her fear replaced by fascination, Jules becomes determined to make contact with the mysterious figure and to unlock the door. Past and present intersect as she and her ghostly friend discover - and change - the fate of the family who lived in the house all those many years ago.

LITERARY GOLD HAS BEEN STRUCK
I've been keeping up with Mary Downing Hahn's books for a VERY long time, ever since I became an avid reader of hers around 2005. This book may be short, but it reminded me of why exactly I wanted to be a writer at the age of 8. if you enjoyed Wait till Helen comes, as I did as a child, you will adore this book. it's short, sweet, and the creative writing style is Top Notch. buy it. read it. never look back.

Great YA Book
Mary Downing Hahn is one of my favorite children's authors. She's one of only a few who write this genre for elementary school age kids and she does an outstanding job. I bought this book for my grand-daughter for Christmas and listened to it so I would be able to discuss it with her. It was much more graphic than her previous books and bordered on "thriller", not just scary. As expected, it was a great book but I would only recommend this book for 7th grade and up.

Good book, distracting presentation
The performance is very distracting. The narrator reads each sentence as of it is a complete and separate thought. Long pauses between sentences made the story seem very disjointed. She placed emphasis on words within the sentences that created a very odd rhythm to the thought.
The story is good for tween-age children (I listened to it with my 10 year old). But I found myself so distracted by the presentation that I found myself relieved when it was over.
