Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Maia, the youngest half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three sons in line for the throne are killed in an 'accident', he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir. Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father and brothers could make an attempt on his life at any moment. Surrounded by sycophants eager to curry favour with the naïve new emperor and overwhelmed by the burdens of his new life, he can trust nobody. Amid the swirl of plots to depose him, offers of arranged marriages and the spectre of the unknown conspirators who lurk in the shadows, he must quickly adjust to life as the Goblin Emperor.

Almost perfect
This is one of my favourite books and was happy to find and audio book of it! The only snag was that part of chapter 30 is missing, one of the better parts at that! Aside from that everything else was great

strange pronunciation of common words
I love this book. The narrator has an odd attitude; he sounds annoyed or sardonic a lot of the time, Words with the vowel la' in are sometimes pronounced very oddly, but the names and words unique to this imaginary world are spoken faultlessly. Odd!

Glorious
I first read the book several years ago, but revisiting it as an audiobook really was an untrammelled delight. It’s a deeply beloved novel in my circles, with its cinnamon roll protagonist gradually overcoming the bigotry and Macchiavellian schemes of the court which he finds himself suddenly ruling, but I have to say the vocal performance really elevated the story. Cracking character voices and a crisp, engaging narrative voice; I’m horribly fussy about narrators so it is a real joy to find a beloved book so well served by the voice artist.

Engaging story line.
Enjoyed the story but the character names we're confusing as place names.
Narration was annoying.

Great story & performance but parts are missing
Great performance, beautiful story but unfortunately there are some technical issues with the audiobook, like missing the very important last part of chapter 30.

fantastic book and good reading
there were some odd echos in this recording, with lines repeating quietly in the background as the reading continued. other than that, the book and the performance are wonderful

Can I have more please?
I read it, and then read it again and then the audiobook was finally available and I listened. I'm so happy!
Katherine Addison builds a rich, compelling world with a brilliant assortment of personalities. We follow the story with Maia, a very likeable young man who is totally out of his depths. Or is he? He navigates a world he was never even supposed to be a part of, and through chance and tragic circumstances, he's now at the head.
Maia is a true outsider and through him we unravel the intrigues, lies, and corruption of the Elvish court.
Incredible world build, wonderful writing, and my only complaint is that I want more. Much more....

Really good, but…
The faux British accent really takes you out of it, and if you listen to this, do yourself a favour and keep a notebook to keep track of all the names, titles etc.
And last thing is that the Elves really have nothing to distinguish them from Human except in name, and the Goblins are really just a bit foreign instead of being a different race. It’s just a bit of a gimmick.
Otherwise this is a really enjoyable story with a good resolution

Really good
Political intrigue and detailed world building, quickly invested in the likeable underdog MC.
Names of places and people can be hard to keep track of but it's a great story.
Narration also gets 5 stars.

unexpectedly great
I have never enjoyed politics in fantasy books but after listening to the goblin emperor I can appreciate it a lot more. I was hooked from beginning to end and the narrator was amazing. I loved all the characters and definitely enjoyed the main character's progression.

LOVE.
This is currently my best find of this year. Amongst my favourite books of all time. Genuinely in love with the story and the narration. I haven’t been this excited for an audiobook since the Martian. 5/5 for sure.

Great story
Really interesting book that says a lot in 15 hours the names and places can be a little confusing to remember and I fairly often got characters mixed around but the context of the story and the way the main character speaks to them usually sorted who they were out in my head. there was a good arc for the character and I feel the ending was very fitting and as satisfying as it needed to be.

Not for me
I had heard many good things about this book and had been warned that it was quite slow and very focused on courtly life and drama. I went in with no expectations but in the end I really struggled and gave up by the 4 hour mark. This story is INCREDIBLY slow and the characters and world are simply uninteresting (plus it doesn't help that all of the characters names are nonsensical and extremely similar). I hate to say it, but I was simply bored. I gave it a solid try but in the end it's not for me.

Tolerable
Great narrator and an okay story. But it's not edge of your seat reading - not a lot happens. Just a mild sort of a listen. Still, I'd read more if there is more.
