Publisher's Summary

A little girl on a big horse, cantering across a spring-green pasture...wide-eyed children gathered 'round a beach fire, listening to a father's stories of the high seas...an expansive, you-can-see-forever view from the top of Pike's Peak...another view from a Stryker frame, where an active young woman learns she will never walk again...heading down a church aisle to marry the man she loves...looking into the eyes of a child in a wheelchair, and seeing the family God has prepared for a loving heart...sitting by the pool of Bethesda, reflecting on the miracle of healing God has performed in her heart....

The God I Love brings to life these and many other moments. It offers an eternal perspective from a woman in a wheelchair who affirms that the God she knows and loves is the center, the peacemaker, the passport to adventure, the joy ride, and the answer to her deepest longings. Raised in an active, adventurous family, Joni Eareckson Tada worked hard and played hard to keep up with her older sisters and athletic father - until one day, a diving accident left her a quadriplegic. But the tragedy that could have ended her life was in reality the beginning of an amazing, constantly unfolding story of grace that has touched the lives of millions worldwide and brought Joni unexpected joy and fulfillment.

In this book, Joni unveils the God whom she has found to be faithful through over thirty years as a paralytic. This is not the story of a woman who has all the answers or who is very different from you. Joni struggles with the same fears, questions, and heartaches we all have in common. But as the weeks and months turn into years, and the years into decades, she meets her Savior at every turn.

In this book, you'll discover that he is there for you as well, no matter what your circumstance or situation may be. Written with beauty, feeling, and amazing honesty, The God I Love captures the heart and soul of one woman's powerful, deeply personal journey of hope. It is a sojourn from a naïve child's belief to a tempered faith that transforms and transcends personal tragedy, bringing light to the darkest places and good out of the most difficult situations, and offering glimpses of the glory that awaits God's children.

Intense, a learning experience

I have read most of Joni Eareckson Tada's books, so was looking forward to getting a copy of her latest to read. This one is read by the author (Joni) and I was glad to hear it read by her because her reading enables the hearer to more correctly interpret by her voice intonations and word emphasis the emotions she is trying to convey (I don't think the written word would have been as effective). Even if you're not in the "evangelical Christian" crowd, this book gives you a real picture (or as close as possible) of what it might be like to be extensively handicapped (Joni is a quadripalegic). The book covers different events from her life; it is very intense; I could only listen to it in half hour segments. Being a "Joni" fan, of course I was a bit prejudiced. But, I am going to make sure that a relative of mine who is battling cancer hears this. This book is the kind you must read or listen to several times. I loved it, not because it made me "feel good", but because I love to hear truth, and admire those who want to live life embracing it, even though it costs them seemingly everything.

Extremely relevant and personal

I mostly downloaded this for my wife to listen to, but I was hooked immediately. Joni relates as a real person with the same questons and concerns all of us have. She drives successfully at the real relationship between God and us, and why He is loved. I not only listened to the entire unabridged audiobook, but I played it again for my children (7 and 9). They have eagerly listened to all 14 hours back and forth from school. Every car ride began with an immediate request from them: "Let's hear the Joni story!". Much of what I want to say to my children is expressed in this memoir. And much of what God has to say to me is there too.

An Open Door

I have known of Joni since the early 80's. I knew she loved God, I knew she was a gifted artist. I knew she was truly a Christian Icon of our day, but this book however reveals many many things about her and her background I did not know. This book, all 14 hrs. of it, is truly a treasure. Yeah, it is long, but I love to visit with Joni and learn so much about her, her family, her faith and the road that brought her to where she is today. It is like getting to know an old, special friend, little by little. Her vivid insights into how God worked in her life, some truly miraculous coincidences and still it goes on. I will want to listen again when I am through. I have enjoyed putting in my earphones to hear her each time I walk, workout at the gym, clean out the garage or just wait in long Christmas lines at the store. You will enjoy this if you have a thirst for knowing people, knowing how God wants to move in your life and knowing God.

The best audiobook ever made!

If you only try one audiobook, if you need inspiration and comfort, if you are at or near the end of your rope -- this is the book for you.

When you listen to Joni, you will be moved by her story and as a bonus you will fall in love with her angelic singing voice. She sounds a bit like Karen Carpenter to me.

It is amazing how God has blessed this beautiful woman. I know many people who have not heard her story will wonder how I can say that. Paralysis is nothing that anyone would desire; but when you listen to this book, you will understand. I have come to understand and even thank God for my own paralysis thanks to Joni's amazing perspective.

That's enough reading my review -- download this book and get ready to fall in love with God as well as one of His most precious gems!

THE GOD I LOVE

WHAT A GRIPPING BOOK. TOLD BY JONI SO HONESTLY AND FROM THE HEART. BEING NARRATED BY JONI WAS LIKE HAVING A CONVERSTION WITH HER. I AM IMPRESSED WITH HER AID TO THE LESS FORTUNATE.
HER VULNARABILITY REGARDING HEER DISABILITY HAS MADE THIS ONE OF MY BEST LOVED BOOKS.

A Refreshing Guide to the Christian Life

Thank you Joni for another book that inspires me to keep looking toward 'The God I Love' for all the answers to the questions in my life. I am so excited that people who have never heard your story, may hear it for the first time in this book, and for those of us who have read your books and followed you for 30 years, we get to revisit, like you have, all that God has done in your life. I recommend this audio book to anyone who wants to let the Lord into every area of their lives and have an understanding of what He wants for them. Joni's voice is so nice to listen to, too!

Outstanding. Highly recommended

This book is an intense, personal, moving account of Joni's life ? a must-hear. Joni's pace is gentle and insightful, but never slow and laborious. She explores pivotal snapshots in her life, and does so with a tenderness and warmth that is inviting, but never overly sentimental. In a remarkably understated but effective manner, she manages to create a backdrop composed of the wisdom and insight of adulthood without ever doing damage to the real, intense memories and feelings of childhood. A remarkable accomplishment.

Throughout, Joni's reading is sensitive and tender, with a personal inflection and style that quickly made me forget that she was reading to millions. In fact this is one of those books that after hearing it read by the author, I wonder how I could settle for simply reading it in print. Highly recommended.

Extraordinary

What a wonderful, upbeat and moving narrative. It felt like a conversation with the author rather than hearing a book read. I couldn't wait to get in the car to listen to the next segment. After getting to know the author so well through her story, I will never look at parapalegics the same way again. I highly recommend this book.

What a mighty God!!!!

I have been saved for over 17-years and have never been touched more than when I have read or listened to anything from Joni Eareckson Tada. When I downloaded this audiobook I knew I was going to be blessed but I never expected so much. This is the story of Joni's life but mainly the story of the many things God has taught her throughout her journey with Him.

Even if you have already read this book you need to download it just to hear Joni's wonderful narrative of her own story. This is truly a story for the ages about a paralyzed woman who, by the grace of God, has learned the most valuable lesson that any of His children can ever learn: Sometimes God says "no." Not because He doesn't love us, but because He loves us so much that He wants to give us His very best: Himself.

If you desire to dive into the depths of the goodness of God and begin to understand more of His loving heart toward those He calls His own then don't miss this one!

So far, it's kind of boring

I read the other reviews, and was expecting a good book. Maybe it is, but I'm over two hours into it and so far, it's nice, but not very interesting. This is the first book of hers I've tried. I'm still listening to it because if so many people in other reviews liked it, maybe something will change soon...

Joni is enthusiastic in her reading, but frankly, listening to her early life was... boring as heck. She obviously loves her father and had a wonderful childhood, but I found it saccharine, true or not. It sounds like she had Ozzie and Harriet for parents.

The audibook begins well before her accident, "I dug my toes into the sand of Delware Beach, hugged my knees and drew as close to the campfire as I could. The flames warmed our faces...." , and soon the listener hears her experience in listening to her father's retelling of the retelling of the story of the Flying Dutchman. It's great that she finds such joy is such sweet memories, but... to me, "I guess you had to be there."

If you are looking for something that will hold your interest, or for something that shows insight, this is not the book for you. If you are a fan of the author, this book goes into tedious detail of her childhood.

It's a nice book, but, zzzzzzzz.

Joni Brings her story to life

Joni has long been a favourite author and singer of mine. I read this book when it was first published and to hear Joni read her own words just brought the whole thing to life.

I am so enthralled by Joni's life and the truth and humour with which she writes. All brought so much the more to life by her own reading of the book.

A ‘MUST LISTEN’

I read this book a few years ago and immediately added it to my top five all time favourite books.
I can’t recommend this book highly enough. It’s not a fast paced read: steady to slow which suits the material perfectly.
Joni is renowned artist of paint and pencil but she is also a renowned artist of words. I can picture each scene of this book as it flows through the pages.
A huge plus is that this is narrated by Joni, with Ken narrating the Scripture verses.
The only downside is that it comes to an end!!! I wanted it to last for much longer.
Thanks Joni, for 14 hours of truly blessed listening time.
