Story
Everyone in the quiet Jersey Shore town of Silver Bay knows the story: on a Sunday evening in September 1991, Ramsey Miller threw a blowout block party, then murdered his beautiful wife and three-year-old daughter. But everyone is wrong. The daughter got away. Now she is nearly eighteen and tired of living in secrecy. Under the name Melanie Denison, she has spent the last fifteen years in small-town West Virginia as part of the Witness Protection Program. She has never been allowed to travel, go to a school dance, or even have internet at home. Precautions must be taken at every turn, because Ramsey Miller was never caught and might still be looking for his daughter.

Kept me on the edge of my seat
- By reviewer in Wisconsin on 01-24-19
Publisher's Summary
"I've been following her for the past few days. I know where she buys her groceries, where she has her dry cleaning done, where she works. I don't know the color of her eyes or what they look like when she's scared. But I will."
Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, Colin Thatcher seems at first like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.
Colin's job was to abduct Mia as part of a wild extortion plot and deliver her to his employers. But the plan takes an unexpected turn when Colin suddenly decides to hide Mia in a secluded cabin in rural Minnesota, evading the police and his deadly superiors. Mia's mother, Eve, and Detective Gabe Hoffman will stop at nothing to find them, but no one could have predicted the emotional entanglements that eventually cause this family's world to shatter.
An addictively suspenseful and tautly written thriller, The Good Girl is a compulsive debut that reveals how, even in the perfect family, nothing is as it seems.

Brilliant performances, moving story
The reading performances of the three major characters were outstanding. Nettleton as Eve, was perfect, with the flattened English accent of someone who has lived in the US for 20+ years. I loved the mix of Englishisms and Americanisms that we (yes, I am one) accumulate. Also, her gradual, but subtle, decline was compelling and the attraction to the cop-as-savior was moving.
I didn't want to listen to the Thatcher character, the brute, but, of course, that was the point. The motivation of the character only slowly emerges because his is a story that is revealed over time, and the author had the courage to let it evolve at the right pace.
I loved the gruff cop. I admit it took a while to get through the hoarseness, but, gradually, the character and reader won me over.
The story only gets 4 stars because there are two conclusions (I hesitate to say "endings"). The first is the inevitable outcome that the author leads you towards through both the structure and the content of the story. Presumably, this was all intended to set up the epilog, which I won't give away here. While cleverly done, I thought it was not particularly well motivated within the story.
This is a book about the gradual change in people under the stress of a terrible situation. (This is not an adventure story!) Motives emerge and characters change subtly revealing their true nature. In some way, each character becomes the opposite of what you thought they were.

OH MY GOSH! This book was really good, but I figured out very quickly just what was happening. From then on I was on pins and needles just waiting for the truth to come out. There were a handful of twists that I didn't see coming, but welcomed them. Overall the book was great, I just really wonder what would have happened had the truth come out way sooner than it did.

Finally Finished! Shew!
I could barely get through this book, it dragged so much and was full of cliches. Also, I guessed the twist at the end early in the story, so it lacked that element of surprise. I felt the voices sounded stereotyped, especially Colin and the Detective, though this could be because the dialogue was so stiff. Plus the Mom didn't know how to pronounce Gloucester, the town she was from. (All Audiobooks should be reviewed for pronunciation of names.)
On the plus side, I found the way the story was structured interesting, with the point of view presented by 3 narrators (+1 at the end) and in the time period before and after. This was not hard to follow on audible. The plot and characters were interesting, just not well executed.

Acceptable
Definitely not a great read for suspense or surprising elements. The main characters, kidnapper & kidnapee were mildly interesting, but you knew what was going to happen at their first meeting. If it's on sale, not a bad listen, but don't expect "Gone Girl" like so many disgruntled reviewers before me have.

Nice surprise.. you won't be disappointed!
Would you listen to The Good Girl again? Why?
I would listen to The Good Girl again just to make sure that I didn't miss anything. There were a lot of different twists and turns leading up to the very end.
What other book might you compare The Good Girl to and why?
I would compare The Good Girl to Gone Girl for the many plot twists but also to Harlen Coben books. It was very well written. Great from beginning to end.
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
I love a book that has different narrator's for different characters. Each narrator seemed to really grasp their character's personality.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I don't want to spoil anything but the relationship between mother and daughter was moving and the ending was the best part.
Any additional comments?
I hope everyone will give this book a shot. It is a well written suspense that will keep you engrossed until the last word. I can't wait for the author to write her next novel!

Great Narration, Not So Great Story
Any additional comments?
Sad day.. My first audiobook that I regret using one of my treasured credits for! This book has mistakenly been compared to Gone Girl. Which, yes, we have a missing person situation with a couple of twists at the end. But those are the only things that make the book even remotely similar. I was expecting the same mood and deep sense of suspense as Gone Girl. Unfortunately, this book just was not as sophisticated. I guessed at the very beginning who was behind the kidnapping and hoped that I would be pleasantly surprised with an intriguing twist... Didn't happen! Anyways, there's my rant for the day!
On a positive note I thought the narrators were fabulous until they had to do an impression of the other characters which was strangely awkward.

Disappointing.
I love a good thriller, and some of my favorite audiobooks have casts of multiple voice actors, so I was looking forward to this book. However, this listen was far from thrilling. The so-called "twist" at the end was incredibly predictable; the author threw in plenty of heavy-handed "hints" throughout the story (not to mention the cover art on the book - it practically screams, "I have a secret! Look at the "R" in Girl! Guess what I am hiding!"). I was hoping that, because the twist seemed so apparent, the author MUST have something else in mind. Alas, she did not. I was also disappointed in the voice acting. Some of it was terrible (when a male read a female voice and vice versa; also, the actors lacked nuance so that it was sometimes difficult to tell if a character was thinking something or saying it aloud). I do not recommend this audiobook.

Problematic
Rich white woman disappears. While a detective with an awful lot of time to spend on a single case sets out to find her, rich, beautiful white woman gets busy falling in love with her beastly (but with a heart of gold) kidnapper.
I don’t write many negative reviews, but I HATED this book. Shallow characters and an utterly predictable, clichéd plot. Plus, there are some disturbingly racist descriptions of scary black people and extremely unsubtle anti-abortion propaganda.

Cheap Trick
This book has been compared to Gone Girl, and in the way that it is told (moving fluidly around a timeline from different character's perspectives) as well as the inclusion of seriously narcissistic characters, it is akin. And in the same way as Gone Girl, this book ended leaving me annoyed.
In Gone Girl, I was annoyed at the lack of redeeming characters; in The Good Girl, it's more the author that I'm miffed at. And it's not because all doesn't end happily ever after--I like an unexpected twist, an incompletely resolved ending, a modern tragedy, what have you--but this was not that.
What we find out in the end could have been a perfectly good ending, however, the author wrote the book in such a way that that very last piece is not truly congruent with the rest of the book. There is little foreshadowing and its abruptness leaves the reader feeling like the author decided at the last minute to change the ending into something more controversial.
Three paragraphs of complaining aside, the book as a whole was a compelling read. I did want to learn how the characters got to the end (which was easy to predict, minus the very last character perspective) and there was a decent amount of suspense building up to it. The author used a writing technique that could have been confusing, but her writing is clear and she develops most of the characters quite well (two characters are fairly flat).
The performance, like Gone Girl, was excellent and I really enjoyed the multiple narrators; it enhanced the book's enjoyment.

Very Enjoyable Listen
I very much enjoyed this book. The story was good it had some good twists and turns. It moved at a good pace. The book swaps between four characters (well three for the most part). It follows the story of a girl who has been kidnapped. The main characters are the kidnapper, the police man looking for the her and the mother. I can't say too much as I don't want to spoil the story, but it is interesting.
The narration was excellent. I liked the four person narration. I found all the voices enjoyable to listen to.

Very Disappointed
What disappointed you about The Good Girl?
Unconvincing love story and implausible plot. The love story was described as encompassing but I didn't feel it. If they were so close why didn't Mia confide in Colin. I felt no compassion for the characters.
Would you ever listen to anything by Mary Kubica again?
I have already purchased another book by Mary Kubica, I have not yet listened to it and I am now wondering if I have made a mistake.
Did the narrators do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
The narrators did a good job and I liked Abe.
What character would you cut from The Good Girl?
Difficult to say as the only character I had any liking for was the detective.
Any additional comments?
No.

Gripping
An interesting take with the story told by the kidknapper, mother and detective
I was gripped throughout, the story is sad when 'Owen' opens up about his life in poverty and although I guessed some of the narrative, the ending was a complete surprise

'Girl on a train' meets 'Gone Girl'
Written from the various charters points of view. Keeps you wanting to follow the story of the individual characters that form the whole story. This is a book of love and betrayal. The basics plot line of a kidnapping that doesn't go quite to plan. The characters are well written allowing the reader to see the interactions in their own minds. Although there are some predictable elements their is plenty that is unpredictable and keeps you listening. If you like Gone Girl and Girl on a Train you will like The Good Girl. The narration is also excellent and well cast.

Gem of a Book
I enjoy a lot of books and audio books but every now and then comes one that stands out The Good Girl is a stand out book. I really enjoyed the writing style I felt it captured real depth of the characters without wasting words and making me wish the author would just get on with it. The narration so often a deal breaker for me is just well ... perfect. My most enjoyable listen in a while.

Kept my attention throughout and what an ending
I love books with multiple readers and the characterisation in this novel is superb. Utterly believable, comprehensive and well defined. Although being made aware of the outcome within the first few chapters, with the journey split into 'before and after', I had no difficulty following the many storylines and hope this will be the same for you. There is no way I could give you clues - you just have to find and dissect them for yourselves but it really is well worth the effort. Not an easy listen …… but I like to be challenged, so this was no effort for me. I can only hope you will agree and enjoy something different.

Very enjoyable
This was really good, good and bad characters but all well developed. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the narration of “Gabe”. Not that the narrator wasn’t good but it, for me, jarred with the things we found out about Gabe as the book moved on. In the beginning it gave the book a feeling of old fashioned detective films where there is narration over the top of the movie and as though Gabe was a tired, old, non caring caricature of say Colombo in his scruffy coat when I think Gabe was much deeper (and better turned out, though Colombo was a particular hero of mine!) than that. Altogether, excellent though.

struggled with the narration at first as it soothed me to sleep but once I got past that the story was great. it did labour the point every now and again but that wasnt an issue.

Beyond implausible and a waste of my life.
The narrators were superb but wasted on the story. In case you want to listen to/read this rubbish I won't spoil the 'plot'. I am forced to say that there are so many plot holes that I can't believe it was published, let alone made audible. Apart from the inconsistent narrative there was the fact that one cannot be expected to spend so much time agonising with a main character who turns out to be. ..well let's guess.

Never saw that coming
This is the second Mary Kubica book I have read and it won't be the last. Worked well as an audio book with the different perspectives read by different people - all of them very good. The twist at the end was a big surprise. All in all, a very good book.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK
I am not sure if the story was really bad or it was the readers but this book is not good. Listened to Pretty Baby and was very very disappointed with this one. Nothing good about it. Don't waste your money.
I am giving one star as it won't let me give none or minus.

Superb book. I suggest you buy it immediately.
This was a beautifully written thriller, told from the various perspectives of the characters. Each of the narrators were marvellous. I was genuinely sorry to come to the end of the book.

Don't believe the hype!
I so wish I had read the poor reviews for this book and not believed all the 5 star ones...unfortunately Audible make it difficult to search for 1 star reviews. I suggest you go to Amazon.com and click on and read some of the 1 star reviews before you waste your credit on this.
My problem with 'The Good Girl' was that it was so badly written, and I found myself rolling my eyes and scoffing at so many parts of it. This actually may be the first audible book I return to Audible.
