Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half brother, Ben, didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up - to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? - he’s not there. It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

Publisher's Summary
Some lines should never be crossed.
Police corruption, an investigation that ends in tragedy and the mystery of a little girl’s silence – three unconnected events that will prove to be linked by one small town.
While detective Cormac Reilly faces enemies at work and trouble in his personal life, garda Peter Fisher is relocated out of Galway with the threat of prosecution hanging over his head. But even that is not as terrible as having to work for his overbearing father, the local copper for the pretty seaside town of Roundstone.
For some, like Anna and her young daughter, Tilly, Roundstone is a refuge from trauma. But even this village on the edge of the sea isn’t far enough to escape from the shadows of evil men.

Prefer books without constant f word
I enjoyed the story except I don’t enjoy hearing profanity and this book uses it throughout. I don’t use language like that nor does anyone in my world, so I prefer authors who create dialogue without it.

Amazing Book with a slight audio issue.
This is an amazingly addictive book Very well written, I liked the previous books in this series and find this one to be the best of them all. I could hardly stop listening to this very well thought out story. I can say that the audio has a strange echo sound. In order to clear the audio issue up I deleted the download and then changed the download setting to "high quality" before downloading the book again. This did help but still found the audio quality to be low. Overall great plot, awesome characters and superb narration. I would recommend this title.

McTiernan on a roll
Dervla McTiernan is rapidly becoming a real go to audiobook listen for me. The woman knows how to, using the Irish detective genre, one of the richer veins out there to begin with, spin a yarn: sympathetic protagonists, interesting characterizations, plot complications and sub plots both easy to follow and interesting, and the most difficult element, sticking the landing.
Somewhat timely although it is not really polemic and the theme is hardly unusual for detective novels, the book casts an eye on both police corruption and the dangers of policing, exacerbated by corruption at administrative levels, insofar as it might go in a city and small town in contemporary Ireland.
Ms. McMahon is an exemplary narrator. I do not know if she can shed her Irish inflections to read books from other venues, but she is as good as it gets in differentiating voices and bringing her novelist's characters to life.
It's only Irish detective rock and roll, but I like it. As good if not better than anything by Tana French.

A welcome addition to the Cormac Reilly series!
I’m thrilled that I found this detective series. I was waiting for the fourth release and I was not disappointed. Just like the previous three, this one had twists, turns, surprises, conniving and devious activity plus separate stories that merge together so well. And,mph, the “bad guys” deserve what they get. Listen intently as this plot moves smoothly and fast. Aoife McMahon is indeed one of my favorite narrators. The same goes for author Dervla McTiernan. I’m hoping for the addition of another Reilly series audiobook. Well worth a treasured credit. Highly recommended! Please, may I have more? Epic, I say! EPIC!!!

Love the crime solving.
The basis of the stories are great in this series. The author writes very well. The narration is great. I would say, however, that I think the story line would be better and less frustrating if the crime itself was the focus rather than the childish, jealous behaviors of the police themselves. It has rather put me off this author.

Brilliant book
A very good listen with many twists and turns, Cormac is in trouble again but how can he get out of it and get to the truth?
Is Peter facing an early to his police career? All be answered a book you want to see what happens but also you don't want it to end. The narration is fantastic Aoife is brilliant and the reason I found this book. I hope there will be more to come in the series but would be nice for Cormac to not get suspended and solve cases without his bosses coming down on him.

This is the third book in the Cormac Reilly series and I have enjoyed all three, the narration by Aoife McMahon is first class and the storyline from the first book to the last is very good.I would advise reading the the first two books before this to get to know the characters. There are two more shorter stories to follow but if your like me and like a good ten hour listen I would wait to see if there any any offers before I read them.
