Elaine is an orphan girl who has grown up in a world where magical ability brings power. Her limited talent was enough to ensure a magical training, but she's very inexperienced and was lucky to get a position working in the Great Library. Now, the Grand Sorcerer - the most powerful magician of them all - is dying, although initially that makes little difference to Elaine; she certainly doesn't have the power to compete for higher status in the Golden City. But all that changes when she triggers a magical trap....

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

An inn is a place to rest, a place to talk and share stories, a place to find adventure, or a starting ground for quests and legends. It is in this world, at least. To Erin Solstice, an inn seems like a medieval relic from the past. But here she is, running from Goblins and trying to survive in a world full of monsters and magic. She’d be more excited about all of this if everything wasn’t trying to kill her. But an inn is what she’s found, and so that’s what she becomes; an innkeeper, who serves drinks to heroes and monsters. Mostly monsters. But it’s a living, right?

The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Publisher's Summary
The post of Head Girl of Whitehall looks fantastic on anyone's resume. It places the lucky winner on equal terms to the staff, granting them authority, power, and responsibility that no other student can even dream of possessing. A student lucky enough to win the coveted post is destined for greatness. Everyone will want to know their name.
Naturally, Emily doesn't want it.
But when she returns to Whitehall for her sixth and final year, she discovers that the staff has elected her to the post - and refusal isn't an option. Worse, the Grandmaster wants her to run his pet project - a formal dueling club - even though it's the last thing she wants to do. Reluctantly, she starts to carry out her new duties, unaware that deadly enemies are waiting in the shadows, preparing themselves to strike at her when her back is turned. Someone is spreading rumors about her, someone is sabotaging her projects, someone is weakening the ties that bind her to Whitehall.
And, as matters start to spin out of control, as the life and soul of one of her closest friends is thrown into terrifying danger, Emily must decide between carrying out her duties or walking away, knowing that either choice will cost her dearly...and leave her alone at the center of a deadly storm.

Almost nothing happened
Too much of the story that happened took place off the page. The writer clearly forgot the cardinal rule of writing stories. A story is about challenge and change. No change happened because of the story challenge and all the real events around the challenge happened off page. If this had happened earlier in the series I would have abandoned the author. There's only one book left.

Didn't like this book at all
The first 9-10 hours of this book was very frustrating because it was all bad news and no good news. Its like one of those movies where the good guy gets his but whooped for 99% of the movie and then in the last second turns the tide and wins except even that is taken from you cause the book has a to-be-continued ending. The plot was very predictable except for the who that I couldn't figure out until it was revealed. But the entire time i Kept expecting more and this book just didn't even get close to meeting my expectations even without comparison to the other books in the series. This ending left me with a very bad taste in my mouth and it wouldn't be the first time I've quit entire series over a bad book/ending such as this.
This one sucked so bad i don't feel like listening to any audio books at the moment. I'm not sure how long that is going to last (days, weeks, months).

This is by far the worst book of the series so far
Emily wishey-washes her way throughout the story and is annoying in the extreme in her indecision to address any particular problem. I'm only about 2/3 of a way through the book and I'm not sure if I'll bother to finish.

Ghost Writer? I hope so, cuz WTF
I have been binge listening to this series, and for the most part, other than a few minor issues I have with the authors lack of creativity within his own well developed magic system, it has been enjoyable. Other than the obvious formula used for each book, the story is fairly well told. In no way is CN a 5 star writer, but until this book he has been a pretty solid 4, at least on story telling and world development, buttttt,,,,,,, I have to assume he wasn't feeling well, or had other obligations to uphold, and formatted the basic story line, and handed it off to a ghost writer to meet his publisher's dead line, because this book was terrible. I hate it when authors dumb down thier character to fit a pre planned plot element. Emily literally, and I am not mis using the word, I mean literally, lost about 25 IQ points, between this book and the last. There are way to many recaps of previous story, that.....Hello, we know, after all, we read or listened to the previous books, and Emily spends almost two thirds of the book in her own head, it's a wonder she got anything accomplished, and the crazy amount of time spent, referencing previous occurrences, just seems like the ghost writer was trying to convince us he, or she was CN. I hope the next one is better, cause I can't take anymore of the new imroved, and much stupider Emily, shame on you CN, you are way better than this, and you should be ashamed. Good Day!!

No more
I can't go on anymore. At this point I feel like most of the bad stuff that is going on in the stroy, the MC could have stopped. Having more of the magic power cells and just saying no would have made her live alot batter.
Also, she has killed three necromancers and they still want to mess whit her? Maybe I am a bad guy, but I wold have nuked a town by now just get them to stop.
I don't even know why she is staying at wight hall anymore if she is not wanted there. She also has the gold to pay for batter training, just move on already.

Not what I expected
I was disappointed with this book in comparison with the rest of the series, in my opinion it was almost like the writer had finished about 1/3 of the story that would be expected from the previous books in the series and then fluffed it up to make a whole book.... I hope that he gets back on track with the next book!!

I enjoyed the performance, after listening to the last 12 books I really don't want to quit the series now, but nothing really happens in this story. She goes to school and has trouble with her friends until right near the end when there is a fight.
Certainly disappointed after the previous stories in the series.

This series WAS so good
This series WAS so good, yes it had a few niggles such as often repeating information we know well from previous books, throughout the series she goes through extreme trials, takes on leadership roles and yet still acts very immature. Freida is only a year or two younger than Emily and yet up until the last book, she is made out as if she's a 12 year old kid, and finally, why on earth would anyone think it a good idea to introduce gun powder and weaponry. With the exception of agricultural use, I can't think of anything positive that its introduction brought to our world.
Ok that's quite a lot but we are up to the 13th book. Up until this book I have really enjoyed all them, binge-listening one after another, but this book is full of the filler we already know and its boring, nothing is happening. I will listen to the next book in the hope it gets back to the ever-changing, interesting tale, after all at $15 per book for very short stories, they aren't exactly cheap.
BTW, I get the feeling she would be far better off steering clear of relationships with men, she seems much happier with women, she would be better off being in a relationship with Freida.

No conclusion
I sometimes have problems with males writing as females, there is a slightly skewed understanding which makes it jarr on the mind. This book was so convoluted that it lost coherence. I skipped much, the only one I have done this with so far. Also there was no resolution at the end. So disliking this I am not sure I will bother with the next book. Also why would any female introduce gun powder. Totally bizarre in my mind the other things yes. Also the total disrespect for education system. It has many failings, though a lot are imposed by a bureaucracy, that drains the souls of educators with totally unrealistic and incredibly heavy work loads. Not a fan of this book. His other books in the series have been intriguing and I enjoyed them this was just annoying.
