Publisher's Summary

No one is above the law.

Barfield Prison is one of the toughest high-security prisons in England, housing the country's most dangerous criminals. And when an inmate is found dead in his cell, a riot breaks out, forcing the authorities to investigate a potential murder.

Despite being Barfield's youngest ever female Governor, Helen Hewitt is seen as the best woman for the job. But with a prison full of corrupt and suspicious officers, restless inmates and a broken system, Helen has her work cut out - and no allies to help her....

Based on the popular TV series starring Janet McTeer, the complete and unabridged Governor series is now available for the first time in audio.

Became Boring

I have 5 hours to go to complete this audio and have listened intently thus far. I have realized after 10 hours listening I have yet to identify a purpose or theme to this story.
I have been surprised at the complexity of running a prison and the staff as well as controlling the high profile prisoners but at this point I’m becoming bored. I have made the decision I do not want to invest another 5 hours to this story. The narration is very good.

Great insight into a Men's Maximum Prison

Having personal experience as an educator in a U.S. maximum prison for men, I found this story to be of personal interest. Similar to Barfield, the prison in which I worked had drugs and some correctional officers who were too buddy buddy with the residents. During the time period during which this was written, it was very difficult for women to work "behind the walls" and be respected by both male staff and the inmates. I can only imagine how difficult it was for Helen Hewitt to be the boss. I appreciate the limited use of profanity (or may be I did not notice it). The narrator was superb! I did have to repeat some sections because my mind drifted off focus. The story was really long but I am not sure what parts I would eliminate. I am looking forward to the sequel of this title.

The Governor

Loved this story, it kept me hooked and always wondering what was going to happen next! The characters were so well thought of and prison life fascinating and scary. The narration was excellent.

good story but drug on at times.

Slow moving at times but worth it in the end. in addition, for such a strong woman her school-girl crush was pathetic...especially when she knew he was dating one of her assistants.

I'm hooked.

This was an amazing listen. I really enjoy fiction books with a message. This one has dozens of messages - women can be intelligent and strong in the most dangerous section of the male world is the major theme. You will have to listen yourself to hear the other messages. Excellent writing and wonderful narration. Not a single boring moment.

Great Book

La Plante is a great writer, lots of excitement and a powerful woman making a name for herself. Great performance!

Great story

I enjoyed this story, but the first part felt independent from the rest, almost as if they were separate books: a prequel and a sequel. The story was engaging though the addition of so many insignificant characters made it feel confusing. I was a bit let down by such a major plot line (*spoiler: helicopter escape) wasn't even mentioned again or brought to a conclusion. I'll read the second book because I want to see if all the above are resolved there.

I listened on Audible and the narrator is absolutely one of my favorites as of recently and she made this story infinitely better.

Amazing!

Interesting plot/idea, The Governor. A complicated story, very well told. An insight into the tangled web of prison politics, unraveled with a lot of insight into both the prisoners' life's, that of those in daily contact with them, as well as those managing both on the outside. Not just a story, but one made that much more interesting in the telling of all the facts, dynamics, and details. Am on to Part II of The Governor.

So good I immediately ordered the sequel

Wow! This story is engaging, and Lucy Price-Lewis reads it with urgency, making The Governor great entertainment. I enjoyed watching Helen Hewitt, the youngest female governor in charge of a brutal prison in England, grow into the position, surprising her superiors and subordinates.

Slow

Very slow. Good story about prison life. Similar events to those shared by the autobiographies of prison officers much told in a mild story fashion. Story did not hold my interest and I struggled to stay with it to the end.

Everything about this is awesome

This book, so I have to say I totally have a bit of a girl crush on the leading lady. Helen Hewett takes on a new role and my god is she the right woman for the job. The team of prison officers arnt keen when a newbie gets promoted over and above their friend and colleague. The don’t like her ideas, beliefs or rules. They want her to fall. If ever I needed some girl power inspiration, this was the book. I can’t wait to start the second in the series. Thank you audible for recommending it to me.

Brilliant

Main character was super annoying and woke to begin with but became more real as the book progressed. La Plante obviously did masses of research into the prison service- so I learned a lot. Times have changed and many of the ideas explored are now implemented.

Interesting idea, certainly of it's time, very farfetched in places, prefer the prime suspect books

Boring

I can see why this worked well as a TV series, as a book it was downright boring, predictable and an odd portrayal of women in that industry. Great reader as usual, good portrayal of characters.

Dull

A patronising portrayal of women, hard to believe the book is written by a woman, every female character is stereotypically flawed and all the male characters are either stupid, sexist or brutal. Definitely written with a screen play in mind and incredibly dull but well narrated.

I found this story had a slow start but became more interesting asit progressed. i now want to listen to the second book. Well narrated
