Publisher's Summary

A curmudgeon and his eccentric new roommate join together to plan an epic escape in this charming, poignant tale.

Joel lives in a nursing home, and he’s not one bit happy about it. He hates being told when to eat, when to sleep, when to take his pills. He’s fed up with life and begins to plan a way out when his new roommate, a retired soap opera actor named Frank, moves in and turns the nursing-home community upside down.

Though the two men couldn’t be more opposite, a fast friendship is formed when Frank is the only one who listens to and stands up for Joel. When he tells Frank about his burgeoning plan, they embark together on a mission to find the perfect escape and along the way will discover that it’s never too late for new beginnings.

Filled with colorful characters, sparkling humor, and deep emotion, The Great Unexpected is the story of friendship, finding oneself later in life, and experiencing newfound joy in the most unexpected places.

Realistic and insightful

The characters came to life through great dialog.
They reflect on their past and try to manage their new lives after their careers have ended and they are residents in a retirement home.

I found it enjoyable. All the characters were so well developed. It would make a good movie.

Lots of Life and Love in This Read

writer made me feel all sorts of emotions. i also would laugh out loud at the characters' bantering and their scheming. level of seriousness to it, too, in their recollecting of the past and dealing with the seriousness of depression. very pleased to have purchased it.

Remarkable Character Development

I came to love the main character, Joel Monroe. Although the story was very sad for long stretches, the unexpected peppering of dark humor was clever and touching.

Wonderful story

What a wonderful story! Everyone should read this book, both young and old and those inbetween. It brings to mind this excerpt taken from Yeats:
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.

A truely heart warming story

It was a bit slow at first but then picked up and kept my interest til the end, which I was disappointed it ended so soon.

Excellent narration

The narrator can really make or break an audiobook for me, and Aidan Kelly makes every book he reads! It’s a great story made even better.

Tedious

The narrator is awesome, but the writing becomes tedious without much happening. Also, if you can’t see the ending coming from the start, you just aren’t paying attention
