Publisher's Summary

On Halloween night, eight trick-or-treaters gather at the haunted house by the edge of town, ready for adventure. But when something whisks their friend Pip away, only one man, the sinister Carapace Clavicle Moundshroud, can help the boys find him. "If you want to know what Halloween is, or if you simply want an eerie adventure, take this mystery history trip. You couldn't ask for better than master fantasizer Ray Bradbury," raves The Boston Globe.

This childhood favorite is so much more now!

I was a voracious reader in grade school. For a few years in a row, I would check this book out of my local library and read it around Halloween. I loved it, but I haven't read it in decades.

Now, I'm fifty one years old, and I'm amazed at how little I understood of what I was reading. As a child, I loved the dark adventure of it. I understood the ending, but like the rest of the book, it wasn't a complete understanding.

I am so glad that I had at least one more chance to read The Halloween Tree, because at fifty one, I wonder how many more chances I will get!

Great, Fun Read!

I Love Ray Bradbury and love Kirby Heyborne, so this was a no brainer to pick up. I wish would have read this when I was a child, I probably would have appreciated it more, but it was still good nonetheless.

All you need for Halloween!

I was only familiar with the cartoon since I was younger but loved it so much! Reading the book now at 32 I’m deeply in love with it, THIS IS HALLOWEEN!

I truly love Ray Bradbury

I've always enjoyed Ray Bradbury's work.

This one in particular helped fuel my interest in what made Halloween, Halloween.

The only complaint I have is the... misunderstanding of some of the mythologies and history and religions it talks about. I know, I know, it's a fantasy book... it doesn't have to get it perfectly right. Liberties will always be taken. And back when the book was written... I'm pretty sure he did the best he could with the available knowledge to weave together things that often SEEM different but aren't.

It might be a petty complaint, but if no one chooses to read further in the histories and beliefs The Halloween Tree depicts... they're missing out.

The book is a glorious jumping off place to delve into world mythologies. I just recommend that you also stretch beyond this book to get a fuller understanding.

Meh.....

I think overall, Bradbury was trying to give homage to Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", but this isn't Bradbury's strongest writing form, to say the least. There were a few parts I liked: The tension-filled unwrapping of the mummy Moundshroud, only to end it with the equivalent of him saying "Phew! Thanks for that!" :) But overall, I struggled to get through this one. Were he still alive, I'd tell him to stick to Martians.....

Juvenile Halloween horror tale

Ray Bradbury's The Halloween Tree is a youthful Halloween horror novella. A group of young trick and treaters meet up at the scary house in town and find a Halloween tree in the yard. The homeowner has a Rocky Horror picture show vibe. One of their group goes missing and the kids, led by the homeowner go on an adventure to retrieve their friend. Along the way, the visit classic scary venues around the world and throughout history. Finally, they end up needing to offer up each one year from the end of their lives. When the finally make it back, they learn their friend is in the hospital with a burst appendix.

Bradbury offer a rather tame rendition given the youthful target audience with many classic horror venues and situations.

The narration is reasonable with decent character distinction. The tale is short making for a quick listen.

The first spooky story I ever read

A story I usually love but the narration, while decent, didn't quite suit it for me.

The Halloween Tree is brilliant!

Ray Bradbury always spins a good tale, and Kirby Heyborne’s performance is brilliant, delightful, and enchanting. I heard the voice of every 12-year old boy I’ve ever known in his reading. Treat yourself to the Halloween Tree.
