Publisher's Summary

The highly anticipated sequel to A Demon in Silver, The Hangman's Gate continues the epic saga of the War of the Archons.

After uniting the bandit clans, the Iron Tusk has swept into Shengen and taken control of the empire. With an army behind him, he marches along the Skull Road, ready to lay waste to the lands in the west. The rag-tag defenders of Dunrun are all that stand in his way. With their country besieged on all sides, troubling rumors of a priestess amassing power in the North, and unnatural alliances to the south, no help is coming. Alone, they must hold back the god-like powers of the Iron Tusk, or see life as they know it come to an end.

The whole series is a bit confusing

Characters come and go. I don’t feel particularly connected to any of them. The story is fairly confusing.

Not bad, not great.

I’m on the side of other reviewers who have been annoyed by constant new characters and overly long back stories. There are some very cool things that happened in the story, but the buildup didn’t meet the payoff, IMO.

Must read series

This was a righteous second book of a series. Loads of action and plot twists. Tears of joy and sorrow. Loved every second and the narrator is freaking awesome!

Flashbacks inside flashbacks

Ok maybe not that bad but the story constantly stalls to flash back to how a character got where they meet up with other characters. This happens several times and it's a bit jarring to the flow of the story. Once or twice would be ok but it seems to happen over and over again in book one and two.

exceptional!

The only thing I didn't like about this book is how short it was, I applaud you Mr. Ford.

Not so much

Reminds of the melazzan or whatever that other series was. I understand the story line but it’s lost. It’s a weak plot I think is what I mean. 1st book was decent and premise I thought was enticing and story line was well built and brought everything together and made a decent book. This one... not so much.

Who,what,where?? Who knows.

You do not have time to love or hate the players as the writer takes you from one to another with no introduction. I keep zoning out so done...at chapter 4...the second chapter 4.

2nd book issues

Like a lot of 2nd books, this one lagged at times and took a while to get going. However, still a lot of positives to this series: great world building, interesting characters and fantastic narration. It's definitely better than most of these type of genre books.

🤔ᴴᴹᴹᴹ

I don't know it's really strange, I like this one, I liked it as a continuation from part one. I'm not sure how I feel about the story still, once again, its definitely entertaining and leaves me wondering what is going to happen next.

Not For Me

This series is described as 'Grim Dark' which I've come to interpret as 'Boring and Dull'. I managed to listen to the first book (just), and struggled through about half of the second, and decided , enough was enough. I just wasn't engaged by any of the characters, and found the story uninspired. Derek Perkins was the only thing that kept me listening for as long as I did. But even a good narrator can't do much with a bad story. I'll be reclaiming my credits and looking for something better

Surprisingly Very Good

Really enjoying these books. I had never heard of the author and got them from included as a free punt, but would definitely pay for them. Narrator is very good.
Some brilliant characters. World building is slow so a good balance. Character building doesn't suffer as world building is slow burning. This works well as they are relatively short books so it doesn't feel rushed. Highly recommended.

Disjointed

I found the constant redirection unnecessary making the story line disjointed in parts, also the use of profanity could have been substituted therefore it was pointless. That said I will listen to the next book so thanks for the entertainment

Nice!

Simple, well thought out! Battles felt kind of short, but I loved the lore and the pantheon! Definitely got me interested for next book!

Great series

A great story. Allthough the narrator is not good with a variety of voices. His storytelling makes up for it.

Better than the first book

This was quite a bit better than the first book. After listening to the second book, I am more interested in the author’s writing, curious about where the series is leading (whereas, after the first book I wasn’t bothered) and also now I am willing to pay for third book.

However, there is still some awkward story/writing. Additionally, like the first book, it is a little hard to follow in areas where they switch back and forth giving dates. It is unclear whether it is the same time or a distant time period. Without having text that one can easily refer to, one would have to note and remember what date is being given and then compare. This is added to the fact that several stories (featuring many different characters - both related and totally unrelated at the time) are all going on throughout the story. Also there are two different scenes near the end with one of the head villains where the scenes/monologue and dialogue are embarrassing similar to those in the last movie of Harry Potter with Voldemort.

The characters were much more likeable and three dimensional in this one, but the main character(s) are the ones that are kind of just okay. So it is is harder to be invested fully. Still it is better than the first book, which was itself pretty good.

My verdict is that book 2 is well worth a listen - especially if it can be obtained as part of membership for free.

Enjoyed the book

It is certainly not a joyful story but rather one filled with people swearing and behaving like actual people would. Something I like but might not be anyone’s cup of tea.
Well narrated and with a good balance of detail and speed.

Not quite the ending i wanted

Gets pretty heavy in detail and a character map would be good at times. But for the most part it all comes together really well.
