Basic Information and VERY Repetitive
If you’ve never seen or been around a baby in your entire life, then this book may be helpful. As a FTM, I did not find it particularly helpful and think that all the information offered could have easily been condensed into a 2-3 page PDF. There were a few good nuggets, but the author offers his 5Ss - Swaddling, Shushing, Side/Stomach position, Swinging, and Sucking over and over again, sometimes using the exact same paragraphs used earlier in the book. He “debunks” myths with very selective and limited research. It’s okay as a quick and casual listen, but I honestly wouldn’t recommend. Extremely repetitive.

A heteronormative perspective
We heard about the 5 S's shortly after our baby was born. Once I had the time, I was interested in reading the full context on the 5 S's so I picked up this audio book. While I would say we found the methods of the S's helpful for our baby, I felt that the anecdotes throughout the book were from a very heteronormative perspective. While the author may argue the tactics remain the same across all families, it would be nice if within the book the author acknowledged single parent, multi-generational and same sex families as part of the intended audience.

My expectation was much higher from this book. Too little information on “how to do 5 S” and too much repetition about effectiveness of these 5 strategies.

repeat of same information
same information at least 4 times or more. same words and tone. probably audio was edited only to last longer. it could have been done within 1 hour of audio time or so, then it would be a 0.99 cent book so the publisher must have said, you must make the book longer and it was edited with same story over and over again. helpful information I will try on our new born baby but it was done horribly.

Well justified repetition
Yes, people complain about all the repetition, However I don’t think I’d have learned a third of the keys to the 5 s without listening to it again and again.

There are only few ideas talked repeatedly in all the book. It could have been much shorter. Also it contains a lot of historical facts and how the things are done in other cultures what I didn't find very helpful or relevant.
