Story
Cornelia Arnolda Johanna "Corrie" ten Boom (April 15, 1892 - April 15, 1983) was a Dutch watchmaker who worked with her father Casper and other family members to help, reportedly, 800 Jews escape the Nazi Holocaust during World War II by hiding them in their home. Eventually, the family was caught; ten Boom was arrested, sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp, and released after 10 months due to a clerical error. Later in life, ten Boom wrote The Hiding Place, a biography that recounts the story of her family's efforts and how she was able to find hope while imprisoned.

Story
In January 1956, a tragic story flooded headlines around the world. Five men, spurred by a passion to share the good news of Jesus Christ, ventured deep into the jungles of Ecuador. Their goal: to make contact with an isolated tribe whose previous response to the outside world had been to attack all strangers. Through Gates of Splendor, the story of Nate Saint, Roger Youderian, Ed McCully, Pete Fleming, and Jim Elliot, was first recorded in 1956 by Jim's widow, Elisabeth.

Amazing Courage
Story was lovingly read with the voice of (what sounded like) an elder woman who gave the impression that she understood the hardships faced by Corrie. I mention this because the book places Corrie in her 50's and so it feels as though you were actually hearing the words from Corrie herself.
I was completely taken by how Corrie and her sister Betsy were able to keep so much hate from entering their hearts for their captors and for that matter all the bad that was happening around them. It was amazing to hear of all the good they were able to accomplish through the underground and the many lives that were touched by such a loving family. The story talks much of the work they accomplished for years prior to the capture of her family and each persons involvement as well as her life prior to the invasion of Holland. So the story does not linger on how much bad had occured after they were captured and is not so sullan as to depress the listener. It gave me a new found respect for the affection of others and also how God was able to heal and protect during such a tumultuous time.

Riveting
Would you consider the audio edition of The Hiding Place to be better than the print version?
Yes, because the narrator makes me feel like I am actually hearing Corrie Ten Boom. I read the print version several years ago and the audio version has been even better!
Which character – as performed by Bernadette Dunne – was your favorite?
Corrie of course, because it is a first person narrative, but she is quite adept at bringing out the characters or each of the other people in the book--even the men.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This is an extremely sad and serious book overall, but it is not depressing. Throughout the book, the grace and sovereignty of God is evident.
Any additional comments?
God promises in Isaiah 41:10, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" and The Hiding Place is evidence of His faithfulness to this promise.

Fantastic Book and Fantastic Reading of it!
I was turned onto this book by an excerpt of it from a Sunday school message. It is a great story and greatly challenges and convicts. Her and her sister Betsy's ability to forgive is flat out amazing and puts into perspective how petty some of the items people are unforgiving over. I HIGHLY recommend this book and the reading of it.

The Hiding Place: An Excellent Book for all Ages
What disappointed you about The Hiding Place?
There is nothing disappointing about this book if you are looking for a quality family novel. However, I would recommend that an adult read it and discuss chapters with any child who has been assigned it as a "summer reading" book. Much of the content requires historical discussions and deals with complex content which should not be left to a child's understanding or interpretation. Middle grade level children should be given close supervision and opportunities for open discussion. If a parent is purchasing the book as a school assignment, I recommend that he/she purchase the bound copy for the child and the audible for him/herself and read/study along with the child.
Would you ever listen to anything by Corrie ten Boom again?
Absolutely.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Bernadette Dunne?
Bernadette Dunne has done the best job that could have been done. I think that she gave the book its true voice.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I loved the book!!
Any additional comments?
The book and narrator are a perfect match.

A "Must Listen" for All
If you could sum up The Hiding Place in three words, what would they be?
Inspiring. Humbling. Precious.
What did you like best about this story?
The best thing about this story is that even after listening to it thirty years after I first read it, it still is able to draw me in, sit me down in the story, and keep my head and my heart engaged.
What about Bernadette Dunne’s performance did you like?
Bernadette Dunne cared about what she did. She cared about the characters. She erased the line between story and listener.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Forgiveness. When Corrie is able to draw on her sister's courage and sense of mercy and forgive.
Any additional comments?
It would be good if this book were heard or read by young women seeking heroines.

Excelent reading of a book I loved many years ago
I read, The Hiding Place, as a teenager and was really enthralled by Corrie's story. When I saw it on Audible I wondered if it would be read as I read it, It was. It really brought the horror of the Concentration camps and the absolute faith of the sisters to life.
As a grown up it has challenged me to step up my faith and to accept that God is in control, even when it seems I am so far away.
Fully recommend this.

A definite must read book.
Bernadette Dunne reads this book very well. Sadly it is not a story but very true. I first read this book 40 years ago and it is lovely to have it read to me. The story is wonderful yet harrowing. Showing true faith in God and seeing His hand in their lives. 40 years ago I thought ...this would never happen again, we wouldn't allow it, yet it brought home just how many Christians are being persecuted today. God's people always being attacked by Satan. It shows us how to live and that God will bring us through everything if we only trust Him. The reader takes us on a journey and makes you feel you are actually there. A definite must read book.

What a great book! Hearing the tale of the Ten Booms is encouraging and inspiring. Jesus is the light in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome the light. It didn't get much darker than Nazi-occupied Europe but Corrie and her family were strengthened by God and used for tremendous good in awful circumstances. This book is a wonderful example of what God can achieve through us if we invite him in!

Wonderful performance of a timeless book. A book for all as history repeats itself once again. Filled with wisdom, strength, joy, love and forgiveness in the face of the darkest evil that possesses the human spirit.
I am equally amazed at how the horrors of WWII could be so honestly shared without the graphic details which can traumatise even the listener for a lifetime.
