Story
For 300 years, The Pilgrim's Progress has remained perhaps the best-loved and most read of devotional fictions. In plain yet powerful and moving language, Bunyan tells the story of Christian's struggle to attain salvation and the Gates of Heaven. He must pass through the Slough of Despond, ward off the temptations of Vanity Fair, and fight the monstrous Apollyon. In Part II, his wife and children follow the same path, helped and protected by Great-heart, until for them, too, "the trumpets sound on the other side."

Story
Cornelia Arnolda Johanna "Corrie" ten Boom (April 15, 1892 - April 15, 1983) was a Dutch watchmaker who worked with her father Casper and other family members to help, reportedly, 800 Jews escape the Nazi Holocaust during World War II by hiding them in their home. Eventually, the family was caught; ten Boom was arrested, sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp, and released after 10 months due to a clerical error. Later in life, ten Boom wrote The Hiding Place, a biography that recounts the story of her family's efforts and how she was able to find hope while imprisoned.Â

As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer. In the first major biography of Bonhoeffer in 40 years, New York Times best-selling author Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life - the theologian and the spy - to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.

Story
This is the most distinguished novel that has come out of South Africa in the 20th century, and it is one of the most important novels of the modern era. Cry, the Beloved Country is in some ways a sad book; it is an indictment of a social system that drives native races into resentment and crime; it is a story of Fate, as inevitable, as relentless, as anything of Thomas Hardy's. Beautifully wrought with high poetic compassion, Cry, the Beloved Country is more than just a story, it is a profound experience of the human spirit.

Story
Hard times come for all in life, with no real explanation. When we walk through suffering, it has the potential to devastate and destroy, or to be the gateway to gratitude and joy. Elisabeth Elliot was no stranger to suffering. Her first husband, Jim, was murdered by the Waoroni people in Ecuador moments after he arrived in hopes of sharing the gospel. Her second husband was lost to cancer. Yet, it was in her deepest suffering that she learned the deepest lessons about God.

Publisher's Summary
At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another.
But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed. Corrie ten Boom and her family became leaders in the Dutch underground, hiding Jewish people in their home in a specially built room and aiding their escape from the Nazis. For their pains, all but Corrie found death in a concentration camp.
Here is a story aglow with the glory of God and the courage of a quiet Christian whose life was transformed by it.

Inspirational
What did you love best about The Hiding Place?
I read this book in high school....many, many years behind me now, and to listen to this book just made me rekindle that forgiveness, love and understanding of God is all in His time. When our flesh can't do it God gives us the strength to put our hand out. Corrie and her sister Betsy were extraordinary women, I loved her story, How they conquered their time in a horrible place, always going forth with HOPE and FAITH. I will re-listen to this book over and over again.
What did you like best about this story?
The way I could "feel" every situation the narrator painted the picture excellent.
Which character – as performed by Wanda McCaddon – was your favorite?
Hard to choose
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Humble, Quiet, Active FAITH
Although this book has been around for many, many years, I had never actually read it. I had heard quotes from it, little snippets of it, but the book in it's entirely is so much more. And very different than I expected. I cannot begin to tell how "The Hiding Place" blessed me as I listened. Although it is a wonderful story of a Christian family helping and hiding Jews during WWII, the foundation of the book begins many years prior to the war in the home and town of a humble watchmaker. A watchmaker who "forgets" to bill his customers, who takes pleasure in his daily work, who loves his family, and who passes down to them the treasures of God's knowledge that will sustain them in the years to come. It is with a quiet courage that this family eventually answers the call to help their Jewish friends and neighbors. The work that Corrie ten Boom continued following the war is also miraculous and something that isn't as commonly spoken of. Instead of being BITTER, she chose to become even BETTER, following her imprisonment. She chose Jesus. She chose to serve. I cannot recommend this book enough. It will bless you beyond measure.

Inspiring
Any additional comments?
For me this was a difficult book to listen to. It is hard to say that a book about the cold and callous abuse suffered in prison and a concentration camp was wonderful. But, this book was just that, wonderful. I found myself horrified by much of this story of faith, family and survival. Carrie and her family set the standard of living their faith in love very high. The book is especially good because Carrie tells the reader so much about herself and the life she and her family lived before the war involved Holland. It made me feel I knew them and how they would cope and rise to any challenge presented. The best thing about the book was that it was an overview of a whole life. It wasn't just one awful phase plucked out of a life and told out of context. At the end I felt I understood the ten Boom family and their faith and rock like belief in prayer and God's love and abiding protection. Somehow this book was able to flesh out the true horror of WWII. It left me wondering about the stark contrast between the hate filled invaders and collaborators capable of such atrocities and the simple kindness and love exhibited by people like the ten Boom's. Carrie seems to have written the book as a challenge to others to choose to live a life of forgiveness, love and peace. Very inspiring.

Charmed by words and voice
What did you love best about The Hiding Place?
Looking back on her life growing up with her parents and the Tantas. The love and warmth and candor of that time was very heartwarming and relatable....I listened to the early time several times for its nostalgia.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Corrie was my favorite because she was so human and someone I could relate to......not so faith driven that she was saintly.
What does Wanda McCaddon bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her voice just lulls me...the way she spoke the name corrie was magical to my ears...I know these characters because their personalities where painted with soft strokes of vocal sounds and tones, pitches and speech patterns.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When the family had the argument because nollie's daughter couldn't lie to the Gestapo....when Corrie was chiming in with her reasoning, it sounded very life-like....
Any additional comments?
I believe this was a story of great substance and the value was realized based on the talent of the story teller....she truly made the book come to life,

Awesome & Thought Provoking. Emotional Read
What an awesome book. This book really made me look at my life and wonder if I could be as strong a person as Corrie was … and this is not a fiction account of a life. It is a real life. Corrie and her entire family faced the absolutely worst that a family could face and they came out winners for His kingdom. This book portrays Corrie and her family as real people, faults and all, and tells how they overcame. It clearly demonstrates and tells of God’s holding us in the very palm of His hand and how He gives us His strength when it’s needed. The author of this book made this Dutch family step out of its pages and step right into our hearts.
Even if you have read this book in the past, it is always worth reading again. That’s one of the biggest compliments I can give a book because I rarely read a book more than once and this one has met that mark. Thanks to the authors for this magnificent read.

My new guilty pleasure
What did you love best about The Hiding Place?
The story is so improbable it could only be true: an elderly spinster watchmaker becomes a leader in the Dutch underground of World War 2.
What did you like best about this story?
The richness of the characters and their deep faith in God drew me in.
What does Wanda McCaddon bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narrator's lovely accent helped transport me to Dutch Harlem. The names of people and places roll off her tongue so easily; if I was reading the book myself I'd have to stop and think about each one.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I've had to ration myself to listen to this book on my commute, but it's definitely changed my perspective about the drive. I eagerly anticipate when I can get into to the car and immerse myself in The Hiding Place. I'm more excited to get back to the book than I am to get home.

Corrie's story is truly amazing. I had read "The Hiding Place" three times previously but due to visual problems am now a listener. I listen to books while walking and my walk were longer than usual while listening to "The Hiding Place." The shining faith and dedication of the Ten Booms in the face of Nazi horrors will inspire all. I enjoyed this narrator better than most I've listened to so far.

My wife recommended this book to me years ago and I somehow didn't read it then. Too bad I waited so long for this treat. What a fantastic story. The faith of the people in this book is amazing and beautiful. I came away from this with so many reminders of how blessed the children of God are. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Nollie wins
If you could sum up The Hiding Place in three words, what would they be?
Inspiring, comforting, frightening
Who was your favorite character and why?
Nollie ten Boom, Corrie's sister.
What does Wanda McCaddon bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?
Her lovely voice. I'm dsylexic.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me want the walk of faith in Jesus that Corrie and her family had.
Any additional comments?
It's easier to tell the truth when it will cost you just your life. But when it could cost others theirs? Yet Jesus is supposed to be Truth. Fascinating book. I was struck with Corrie's sister Nollie. She didn't lie.

Deeply moving
How can one not be challenged by her Faith? I feel like I know Corrie, Betsy, and the Ten Boon family.

Am I even a Christian? You'll ask many times.
The Hiding Place is unforgettable and many times I found myself wondering if I was even a Christian. Could I do any of the things that the Ten Booms did? Love the way they loved? Suffer the way they suffered? Die with grace the way most of them died? I can't say I will, but after listening to this book, by the grace of God, I'm certainly going to try.

For anyone who struggles with forgiveness..
I loved this book! absolutely worth reading. This account of living in occupied Holland during WW2 is both haunting and incredible.
This is my 2nd time reading this book and it won't be my last.
Corrie writes with such honesty about her own struggles as a Christian forgiving people who has hurt her greatly.
It's beautiful.
The book also helps pull in to prospective the day to day struggles of today. counting each blessing and challenging the reader to praise G_d in all circumstances.

A Classic
I had read this book as a hard cover years ago and enjoyed it then. Thought I'd revisit it and enjoyed it all over again. The book is based in Holland/Germany but is read by a very English narrator, this wasn't an issue for me. I thought she did a good job. The book is faith based, Christian, but I think even non-christians would find the book positive in promoting over coming your circumstances and overcoming hate to find forgiveness and love even at its toughest.

A true disciple of our Lord and Saviour
For lack of a better Christian word, I was "spellbound" at the reading of this book. I was born 10 years after the war that shaped this remarkable woman and her family. She was extraordinary before her capture but her achievements cannot all be contained in books alone. My mother, though never meeting her, was one of her biggest admirers. My mother herself suffered many struggles in her life of heartbreak and betrayal but she took courage from Corrie Ten Boom's story. One day I will bow at her feet to pay homage to this lady, one of God's generals, in the presence of God and His holy angels and will meet these dear saints who paid such a price for the good of others. The reading was excellently delivered. Thank you'

God is faithful
I’ve known about this book for over 3 decades - but God knows when we need to hear His message - Now living in China this book had much more meaning for me - I felt so many emotions but Joy through forgiveness and surrender rang through and the call to continue to speak the hope of Gods word to a lost world.
The narrator was fantastic , I’m looking forward to hearing the next story Tramp for the Lord by the same author and narrator.

Amazing testimony & witness of God's miracles
A must 'read' for any of us who think we are spiritually strong in our own right. What a challenge Corrie Ten Boom's experience was. and a challenge to us as to whether our current spiritual strength & witness would stand strong under similar circumstances. I have been challenged!

Inspirational
Wow. Inspirational. A beautifully presented autobiography of Corrie and her family through the Nazi regime. Faith, God’s grace and friendship, especially between the sisters, were pillars in holding them together during perilous times. We can certainly learn from those times (from history) as well as appreciate the conveniences we have today.
Thank you for making this audiobook available. Highly recommended.

An incredibly important piece of history
I found this book after seeing a small “history fact” graphic online about Corrie’s story. I’m so glad I looked it up and read it! While it’s not the usual genre I would go for (I enjoy autobiographies, ancient history etc) I was gripped and couldn’t stop listening. The narrator did an excellent job at conveying all of the complex ups and downs of emotions in this book and I felt my heart pounding in some places with anticipation. Absolutely recommend

A must read!
A beautifully written and wonderfully read book that keeps you entertained and marvelling at both the depravity and the sensitivity of human nature. I feel that this book is an important one to remember the sacrifice and hardship so many people went through and how God can use all for His good.
