On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Intriguing!
A strange hum and earth shakes cause weird holes to appear all over town. But that's not the only strange thing to happen, most of the town folks end up with a headache and nosebleed when the hum starts. People are rightly freaking out and a group of survivours set out to leave the town, but when they reach the outskirts they are blocked by a road block manned by army personnel. They are told to return to the town or face being shot. They will have to either figure a way out or find the cause of the noise and sink holes.
This was a quick and easy read. The plot had a steady pace and kept me intrigued till the end. The setting was great as well. You can't go wrong in a small isolated town and it was well developed. I thoroughly enjoyed the uniqueness of this little horror story and am so glad I gave it a go. There are a lot of typical small town characters too but the author writes them so well that you can't help but root for them. Even Ellen!
In all, this was a tense and nerve wracking read and I look forward to checking out more from this author. The sink holes, the mysterious beings and the "Fred is Dead" all made this a chilling, and in a way, fun read!!!
David A. Wood read this well and was able to capture the tense atmosphere. He also had plenty of tones and voices for the different characters and gave a great performance.

Scary and Hilarious
I can't even say how much I enjoyed this book. When I finished this story I actually grieved for the characters because I knew how much I'd miss them, I almost just started it over again! Meikle creates a world so complete with characters so fully fleshed out that I felt like I personally knew them. I fell in love with many of them and I'm hoping beyond hope that there is a sequel to 'The Hole.'
This story begins real-world-scary in that towns folk are besieged by giant holes forming in the ground that are swallowing up houses, cars and people at random. Big Man Sherif teams up with the town doctor to try and keep his townspeople safe. Along with a couple drunks and a rude old lady, these characters fight to the ends of the Earth to stay alive. I can't say more for fear of spoilers, but I can say that I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys horror and adventure. David A. Wood gives an absolutely phenomenal performance in this book.

We Mean....
The story starts out fast paced and keeps that pace until the end. Even at almost seven hours long this book flies by and before you know it you know it you are at the end. The overall story feels like it grabs little pieces of ideas from a lot of other stories as everything always felt a little familiar. The overall flow of everything was done quite well and I found it to be an easy listen, but one that I was excited to continue on with as I quickly became invested in the characters and the mystery.
Overall, I liked the personal interactions of the main characters more so than the plot. It was a fun plot, but I really liked how the characters fit into the setting, how each of them developed throughout the story, and just how each one brought a unique personality to the group. The small-town setting coupled with the small town people were really what got me into their plight and had me emotionally attached to their survival. Meikle has a great ability to describe the characters and I instantly felt like I lived in the town and knew each person first hand. Meikle’s writing in general was quite descriptive and I found myself really enjoying his style.
Wood does a great job narrating this story. His voice perfectly fit the setting and characters. He did a great job with his character voices and I really liked Bill’s and Charlie’s voice. Since I was so character focused with this story, I really think Wood’s narration solidified that aspect for me as he did a solid job bringing each individual character to life and definitely wouldn’t have liked the book as much without him.

Hilarious characters!
Hilarious down home characters in a bad and horrifying situation. The horror aspect of the book was decent and reminded me of a John Saul type of story. BUT, the characters were absolutely great! The constant yet appropriate use of double negatives, good ole southern idioms, neighborly sarcasm, and of course a shot or two of whiskey made this story enjoyable. The narrator did a great job with the voices and a constant laugh out loud moment is when one of the characters, who is terrified of bears, pronounces the word bars. Loved it. Had to get another of Meikle's stories that's narrated by one of my other favorite narrators. I'm sure Meikle's other books mix horror with a tad bit of genuine comedy.

Fred is Dead
I have to admit I totally enjoyed this book and make me think of all of the sink holes that have been occurring but this book takes it to another level of fear. The main characters are Sheriff Bill Wozniak, Janet Dickson (town doctor), Charlie Watson (town drunk and one of my favorites), Fred Grant and Ellen Simmons (a complainer). Just prior to the holes open up every one hears a hum, has nosebleeds, headaches then see different apparitions. Recommend if you enjoy old time horror with good narration. Surprisingly good
I hardly write any reviews, but on this book, I am. I just wanted to try something different, and I was pleasantly surprised.
This book was well written. The book moves fast, and the narrator did a fantastic job! I was skeptical about this book when I downloaded it with a free credit but I gave it a shot. I truly enjoyed this book! I am not sure if this is a book that I would buy to keep in my huge library of actual hard copies of my books, but it is worth listening to.
I do recommend this book for anyone to try. The plot was not what I was expecting, which made made the book intriguing. If I had the time, I would have listened to this book in one whole day! I enjoyed it that much!! However, I have an extremely busy schedule. Therefore, I used every bit of my downtime to listen to this book. I thoroughly enjoyed “The Hole” and I highly recommend this book.

Fred is Dead
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The main characters were well-developed and I really felt like I knew each of them personally by the time the book ended. When a couple of them were killed off (or were they?) I was deeply saddened.
The main premise of the book is that people are hearing a hum, getting nosebleeds and headaches, and then huge sinkholes start appearing around a small town. Who or what is causing this? Is it aliens? Toxic waste? Just a side effect of mining in the area?
Two of my favorite characters are Fred and Charlie, both drunks down on their luck and just looking for a few dollars to keep them and their drinking habit going. By the end of the book, both of these guys are so very much more than just drunks. Just goes to show that you can never judge people's true natures until trouble begins!
I was reminded of the movie "Tremors", which is one of my favorites. There is just enough humor involved to keep the whole thing from becoming too oppressive. The addition of the town harridan is wonderful comic relief as well, mainly because we all know someone who acts like her.
The narrator, David Wood, did a great job and really added a lot to my listening pleasure. Listening to the book was almost like watching a movie due to the great narration and wonderful descriptive story. I was given a chance to listen to this book by the narrator/author/publisher and chose to review it.
