In 19th-century England, Kate and her sister Emily return to the family estate after their father dies. There, under the guardianship of a distant uncle, they live in a small lodge with two great-aunts. One evening while out late and unable to find their way home, they encounter a nest of goblins. GREAT Fantasy Trilogy

What made the experience of listening to The Hollow Kingdom the most enjoyable?

The Hollow Kingdom is the first in a trilogy that has become my absolute favorite fantasy series. The characters are appealing and the plot is riveting.

What did you like best about this story?

The evolution of Marak and Kate's relationship is one of the best parts of the book.

Which character – as performed by Jenny Sterlin – was your favorite?

Marak is the goblin king. While ostensibly ugly, Marak appeals to the audience through his sense of humor and love for his people.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Magic in the Mist

Any additional comments?

This book keeps you riveted from beginning to end. Be sure to read the rest of the series; it only gets more interesting! Jenny Sterlin does a fantastic job of narrating this book. I sincerely hope that she will narrate the rest of the series!

The Handmaid’s Tale: AU goblin version—this time using unwilling people as incubators is sexy!

It’s one thing to incorporate trafficking and normalized r*pe (human, animal, you name it) in a fantasy culture. It’s a whole other thing to eventually frame the main perpetrator of it as romantic. To find the spunky heroine cowed, controlled, and dehumanized with the eventual take away that she came to love her abuser and their life together… sickening. In the book, Kate is viciously perused by a 60+ year old king with magic that could literally make her do anything he wishes (and does). But it’s okay, because he holds her, an actual teenager, while she weeps (from a situation he completely caused and could change any time). The goblin king demonstrates a clear understanding that what he is doing to Kate is psychological torture, but he doesn’t care, because she is the vessel for his future son. “Poor Kate” he whispers while she suffers as a direct result of his voluntary actions… So I guess that makes him super compassionate and swoon-worthy? I kept hoping Kate would continue using her wits to fight for a modicum of agency, but in the end, she agrees to give up her body and life to save her sister, then cries and mopes for a while, often chiding herself for being “childish” and basically goes full Patty Hearst by the end. I guess this is happily ever after folks. Yay.

Wonderful Story

I love Kate’s adventure through this quirky fantasy. The humor and wit of the prose is delightful. While I am a huge fan of Jenny Sterling (I can highly recommend her reading of Howl’s Moving Castle). I do not think she was the best performer for this book. This is a youthful story and I fell her performance lost the energy of the tale.

I read this so long ago!

This trilogy will always have a special place in my heart! I wish this app had the other 2 on here so I could continue hearing it! The performance could have been better but it didn't take away from the writing!

Unique and intriguing story!

Love this tale! So full of uniqueness and wonderful character arcs. I read if first then had to show my husband the audio so we could listen together.

Narration is not what I would have chosen as I felt the inflections were not what I imagined of some of the characters. But it was still worth listening to.

Wow!

I absolutely loved this book! The elements were balanced so beautifully between mystery and foreshadowing that I felt myself placed within its very pages! The narrator was brilliant with her inflections!
Thank you for having this book! I hope the next ones come too!

An awesome journey through a beautiful world

The characters are wonderful! The world is beautiful! One of my favorite things about reading is connecting with the characters, becoming friends, and journeying with them! Crying with them, laughing with the, and rooting them on, you can do all of that with this series, and this book starts it off!

very enjoyable.

it's a very well done novel - I look forward to hunting down the sequels! Kate was an excellent character and her evolving relationships with the people around her were spot on. It reminded me of the Perilous Gard.
