Story
For 300 years, The Pilgrim's Progress has remained perhaps the best-loved and most read of devotional fictions. In plain yet powerful and moving language, Bunyan tells the story of Christian's struggle to attain salvation and the Gates of Heaven. He must pass through the Slough of Despond, ward off the temptations of Vanity Fair, and fight the monstrous Apollyon. In Part II, his wife and children follow the same path, helped and protected by Great-heart, until for them, too, "the trumpets sound on the other side."

Story
To the mind enlightened by divine truth, the difference between a filial fear of offending God and the dread of punishment is very plain. Still, by the devil's sophistry, some of the most pious Christians have been puzzled and bewildered. Bunyan was not ignorant of Satan's devices, and he has roused the energies of his powerful mind, guided by divine truth, to render this important doctrine so clear and easy to be understood, that the believer may not err.

As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer. A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. In Paradise Lost, Milton produced a poem of epic scale, conjuring up a vast, awe-inspiring cosmos and ranging across huge tracts of space and time. Publisher's Summary
First published in 1682, John Bunyan's allegorical novel The Holy War is a classic of Christian literature whose spiritual insight rivals that of even his most famous work, The Pilgrim's Progress. It tells the story of Mansoul, a utopia built to exalt the greatness and honor of its creator and leader, King Shaddai. However, when the wicked Diabolus, a former high servant of Shaddai's and the king of the blacks, assaults Mansoul, the town forgets its benevolent king and falls under his iniquitous rule. With the citizens of his beloved city lost to sin and vice, Shaddai sends his son, Prince Emmanuel, to deliver them from Diabolus' tyranny.
An epic tale of good versus evil, The Holy War is not only a masterpiece of religious literature, but also an entertaining and engaging story for all listeners.

The Holy War
This story could be the virtual reality behind today's headlines. I thought the temperament of the narrative was done in the 16th century style without the poetic language of the King James version. Nevertheless the timeless tactics of spiritually evil forces at work against good are the same today as they were when this was written. The good news is that "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."

Nit quite "A Pilgrim's Progress"
It was a great read and makes a Christian thinks about how we go about day to day. Backsliding is easy because it happens silently a small bit at a time until we are engrossed by sin.

prophetic book
I think this book is not only relevant for one's own life, but also prophetic for our culture: how diabolic people and religions try to overcome our Judeo-Christian cultures, and how we can overcome those attempts. Whereas it could be, and perhaps is, used as a dense theological study, even a child can understand it at some level. It is also in a beautiful language, and nicely written.

Of course this is a classic by a masterful storyteller John Bunyan. The insights, creativity, and wisdom that is given in this story ought to be heard by many believers. The narrator was exceptional in his ability to communicate the nuances of the text in a way that intrigued, instructed, and validated the power of the text. Very good job Audible.

Occasionally long-winded, but a good allegory
A vivid allegory for the Christian life, from the Fall of Man through to being conquered for Christ, the backsliding and lukewarmness, and the repentance and holy zeal.
I especially liked how Bunyan painted the love of Christ in everything Emmanuel did.
It's written in a KJV-style English, so there's plenty of thee's and thou's, and sentences turned inside out. I'm not particular bothered by that, but I have great respect for the narrator for flawlessly rendering it all as if he spoke it every day.
