Publisher's Summary

Horned gods have influenced the development of many magical traditions. This book explores the deep spiritual and historical roots of these gods, and shares rituals and activities designed to help you get closer to them. From Ancient Greece to the Renaissance, to the contemporary age of witchcraft and ritual magick, horned deities have been honored as gods of nature, sex, fertility, passion, sacrifice, death, and rebirth. The Horned God of the Witches reveals the origins and features of their most common guises - Pan, Cernunnos, Herne, Elen of the Ways, the Green Man, and even the Christian devil.

Whether you are interested in the Wiccan Horned God - a composite of several deities - or in the general topic, you will discover rituals for meeting the powerful deity, adding a spiritual charge to your lovemaking, and receiving the gifts of the Witch Father. Author Jason Mankey also includes an in-depth guided meditation for connecting with the Green Man, tips for setting up a devotional altar, directions for the kiss of the eight-pointed star, and much more. Designed to be useful for beginners as well as for those who already have an active devotional practice, this book shares fascinating perspectives and practices that will help you achieve your spiritual and magical goals.

Fantastic

Jason Mankey leaves no stone unturned in his quest to uncover the Horned God of the Witches, as he follows the hoof-prints around the world from prehistory to ancient pagan religions to modern witchcraft, comparing similarities and contrasting differences. This fascinating book is well-researched, respectful, and inclusive, regardless of your theism. The Horned God of the Witches is the best book you can get your hands on for learning about the history of Pan, Cernunnos, Lucifer, the Witchfather, and many more all in one place. More importantly, Mankey shows how to create a genuine connection to and a personal magickal relationship with them through various meditations, rituals, and exercises throughout so that you can raise the horns in your own life.

Jason Mankey is one of those authors where each book is progressively better than the last in my opinion. Mankey is one of the best researchers in Paganism and Witchcraft, but what makes him stand out in this regard is he’s a participant of those worlds while also discerning about its history, not simply an outsider studying it, or a practitioner who is attempting to reshape history to fit his beliefs. The Horned God of the Witches is a topic close to Jason’s heart, and it’s obvious when you read the book. I would be hard-pressed to think of someone more fitting to write a book on this. Before this book, the closest you could get to these topics as a cohesive whole was The Witches' God by Janet & Stewart Farrar published in the late ‘80s. Since then, our understanding of history has changed, and unlike that book, Jason's focus isn’t solely on a Wiccan view, it’s much broader than that, but can help you gain a better understanding of the Wiccan deity as well.

Much needed book

This book was excellent. Jason really did a great job in bringing forth all the different aspects of the Horned God here and made this a keeper. good chance I'll end up getting it as a reference book, especially for the rituals. Also going to make this required reading for 2° initiates for a good understanding of the HG and who he represents in our path.

Disappointment

This book was a huge disappoinment to me. I don't even know where to start.
However, if you are a witch and have a twitter account unironically, ignore the rest. The book is for you.
First of all, author is obsessed with phalluses and maybe instead of mentioning it every sentence and fixating either on his own complexes or on what he believes is the mainest of the main aspects of the Horned God.
Secondly, in the beginning I believed it could be at least a good intro for novices but nope. If the author doesn't tell his exciting life story, he feeds snippets of misinformation mixed with very very very general stuff. Or maybe this is how they teach mythology in America. It gives me sketchy vibes, all these "versions of the myth" he pulls out of nowhere.
Thirdly, the author straight up APOLOGIZES for book being "European-centric". Dude, you're American. You shouldn't be projecting your american guilt on Europeans for having cooler mythology and much better attitude among magic practitioners.
Cherry on top - the narration. Hearing someone ranting about penises in his news host voice was hilarious and memeable...but only for the first chapter. The narrator should have read the room better.
I probably check the rituals and drop the book for more academical sources.

Horned and Hallowed

A wonderful resource. History, literature, art, and ritual. Astounding in its breadth and depth. One of my favourite books on Witchcraft, Paganism, and the Occult. Highest recommendation.
