Publisher's Summary

Barbara was 12 when she was admitted to the psychiatric hospital Aston Hall in 1971. From a troubled home, she'd hoped she would find sanctuary there. But during her stay, Barbara was systematically drugged and abused by its head physician, Dr Kenneth Milner.

Somehow, eventually, she started to campaign for answers. This is a shocking account of how vulnerable children were preyed upon by the doctor entrusted with their care.

Horrific childhood. Almost too bad to believe.

I can't imagine all the atrocities the author endured as a child. Great narration. Sad story but kept the listener engaged.

Gut wrenching, incredibly sad

What made the experience of listening to The Hospital the most enjoyable?

I can't say anything was enjoyable about the story, it was one of the most horrific stories I have heard, but one that must be told and known about.

Any additional comments?

Barbara, thank you for sharing your terrifying and maddening story. I hope that the success of your book continues to bring you more healing and that it may allow for others to step forward who have also been so brutally abused; to give their own terror a voice.

Gripping story of horrific childhood abuse

Barbara oHare writes an incredible biography of her abused childhood and the people that knew and did nothing to help. I feel for her and all the victims is Aston Hall and the despicable Milner...He was no Doctor.

Fantastically Horrible

This book was well written, and the things the author endured were very brutal. The narrator comes off a little annoying at first but after a little while I understand why she was chosen to narrate the book. Her child like voice brought the character to life. Loved this book.

Too horrific to believe!

This story is saddening, maddening, horrific, just too many adjectives come to mind to describe it. Almost too awful to believe. Found I could not stop listening. God bless this author for what she lived through and survived. Sad to think that situations like this happen -- and without a doubt, still do today!! :(

Well-Written, Beautifully Narrated, Horrific Abuse

I listened to this book after it was mentioned at the end of “The Boy In The Cellar.” Both autobiographical accounts of abuse both before and during their separate stays at Ashton Hall. I am as saddened by the abuse encountered as I am that no one would believe these children.

Dramatic true story.

I wasn’t certain if this was a true story or a historical novel. I googled. The abuses at the named hospital and the named doctor are well documented. By coincidence, I had just finished listening to “ Slave Girl,” by the same narrator. The narrator is excellent, and alternated her accent and tones, adult vs child, very well. This book/Audible is well worth reading. Anyone enjoying this book, should consider The Throwaway Children. Although that Audible is 17 hours, it kept my interest throughout. There is more genuine humanity to that book, though it is a historical novel, not a true story.

Totally Absorbing Book

Society's disgusting hidden truth finally fully revealed. Harrowing at times especially when we now realise how prevelant organised child abuse is and has ALWAYS been. It's rife among those in positions of power and control. May Milner's pedophile associates be hunted down and pay for their vile deeds and those who are dead, especially Milner, may they NEVER rest in peace and burn in the bowels of hell for eternity for the pain, suffering and deaths they were responsible for.

Very Harrowing and Wonderful Courage

What a truly sad wonderful and deeply harrowing book by Barbara O' Hare and narrated brilliantly by Charlie Sanderson - I myself am a victim/survivor of truly brutal torture from an uncaring repulsive NHS system and wholly determined to cover-up what happened to me. The current system of pursuing justice in this country is designed against the victim/survivor and this simply has to stop from a system scared of admitting the obvious traumatic abuse of vulnerable adults and which is still widespread. There never is a justification for erroneous 'treatments' and Barbara O' Hare' account of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of evil Dr Milner is truly horrendous - the raw shock of the brutality and disdain show to vulnerable people is truly horrifying. I cried heavily listening to this book because of my own life story and because I am still without justice for being tortured at the hands of criminal NHS Trusts. I agree that living whatever your own individual story is it does make us exceptionally strong super humans - if the system in this country shows duty of care to vulnerable children/adults they have truly horrifically failed and actually learns valuable lessons then a better world awaits us. Shocking

What a story , I listened to it all in one day . That dr 😡. I hope he rots in total hell & I’m so annoyed you didn’t get your day in court with him & those awful unfeeling nurses . Your parents both of them letting you down time & time again & how you told your dad & he did nothing , people like that should not be allowed to have kids . The kids who went missing & how you were moved time & time again . But look how you turned out into a amazing lady who loves her kids & foster kids , who went through so much including cancer & you came out of it all . I wish you all the love in the world & happiness & I hope it gets to court & you at least have your day x

Poor Narration

The story itself was very engaging but the terrible narration deflected attention from it as I found myself being irritated by the narrators lack of the use of punctuation

Boring and repetitive

This book tries it’s best to paint a horrific childhood but instead just repeats the same thing over and over I don’t know what exactly happens at the hospital as by the time it got there I was so bored of hearing the same thing over and over that I didn’t care anymore I did not finish this book and don’t have any interest in returning to it. This may just be me and others may find it a much better listen.

Absolutely shocking

The content of this book is really difficult to listen as it is completely abhorrent what a child has endured though it is something you don’t want to press stop on either. Mature audiences only.
