Read Poorly

Narrating requires emotion, there's a lack of it here. Don't describe a corpse to me as if you're telling me tomorrow's weather report.

I couldn’t finish it

Of course, it’s a great story but an American reading it just ruined the experience. The narrator sounded like a high schooler reading in front of the class an essay he didn’t like. He completely mispronounced a very common French phrase which most Americans are familiar with. Very disappointing, find another recording.

Narrator needs to get some lessons

Narration was packed with mis-pronunciations. I listened along with my HS kid to help explain some of the older English phrases and found that I had to provide corrections for the narrator! Not professional. It’s slightly better than a monotonic reading, but the language, already difficult for those not already familiar, was made worse with errors and no provision for the rhythm of the prose. It was clear the narrator didn’t understand some sections and was simply reading words.

An outdated story, but still over all entertaining

The narrator's diction was very clear, but not a voice performance. The story is written in an old style with an anticlimax, so it put me to sleep rather often. There's some dated racism from the nineteenth century.

Perhaps the worst reading I have ever heard!

This great story has been rendered unlistenable by the talentless performance of the reader. His flat voice, his mispronunciations, his lack of any sense of drama or feeling have all rendered the great Conan Doyle totally impotent! Do not waste your money on this particular reading, as you will be miserably disappointed. A total waste of a good story and my money!
