Story
I thought my sister was happy. I thought what we all thought: that Annie and Dom led perfect lives in a lovely cottage in a quiet village by the sea, with flowers at the front gate and an apple tree in the garden. Everyone knew them: generous, loving Dom, creative, joyful Annie. But I never saw Annie as she sat waiting for Dom well into the night. I didn’t see her smiling through her tears. I didn’t know what the perfect couple was hiding.

Samantha Frayn doesn’t know why Peter Bridges picks her - a nobody with bitten fingernails and a troubled childhood behind her - but she falls quickly. He’s older, charming, likes fine wine and French films, and his beautiful home has real art on its walls. Peter transforms Samantha’s life in an instant. He sees the better version of herself - the one she’s always wanted to be. It’s only normal that there’s a little friction, when she moves in, over domestic matters like where things are kept, or the proper times to eat, sleep, and shower.

The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Publisher's Summary
Everyone is going to the housewarming party. Attending will be all the same people who lived on the street the day Abi vanished.... Will her mother finally learn the truth?
Ava only left her daughter in the pushchair for five minutes. The buckle was fastened, and she was sure it was safe. But when she came downstairs, the door was open and Abi was gone - she walked down the road, past the Lovegoods' house, and was never seen again.
A year later, the Lovegoods throw a housewarming party, showing off the results of their renovation. Ava doesn’t want to go. She can’t bear to look down that end of the road, to see the place where Abi vanished, and she doesn’t want to spend time with people who don’t share her grief. Her husband, Matt, persuades her: He’s worried about her. A night out might do her good.
But as her friends and neighbors chat, and the drink and gossip flows, Ava learns something new about the day she has relived a thousand times. A throwaway comment that could change everything.
Ava thought she knew every last detail of that day.
She’s about to find out she was wrong....
Brilliantly dark and moving suspense fiction for fans of Gillian Flynn, Claire McGowan, and Lisa Jewell, The Housewarming will have your pulse racing and your heart in your mouth from start to finish.

Just Ok
This story could have been better if it had more grit. It takes a long time to get going, and there is too much focus on the mother and her feelings of loss. It's not terrible, but if I had the choice, I wouldn't have used a credit for it.

The ending was great!
The ending was great....and the beginning was pretty good...unfortunately the middle consisted of chapter after chapter of just droning on and on about the same thing..over and over...and nothing much happened...it's one of those books that really had the potential of being a really good book but just didn't get there because instead of anything happening..it was just an essay of one character's feelings.

A Gripping Story
When I listened to the 1st chapter I felt a low grating, the narrator was expressing a desperate character emotion. I was almost tempted to stop listening, I'm so glad I didn't. I even thought I had predicted the killer, unknowing the twist in the story.
This book was emotional and dramatic to the end.

BEST BOOK I’VE LISTENED TO IN 2020
The narrator was perfect, they can truly spoil a good story, but Tamsin was brilliant all the way through. You know you’re reading a REALLY good book when, at the same time as racing through it, you don’t want to finish it! I was completely involved in all the characters lives but Ava and Matt was so well written I wanted to reach out and hold them. A truly outstanding listen. Thank you S.E.Lynes

Worst Listen Ever!
This is the dullest tedium from beginning to end. I tried to stick it out because someone said it got better. It didn't. It's boring and repetitive and nothing happens, just a continual rehash of a woman's anguish. The characters I suppose are upwardly mobile thirty somethings whose values are limited to their decor and the size of their kitchens and there isn't an intelligent conversation between any of them. The men friends speak in Neandertal grunts (apologies Neandertals, I know we've re-evaluated you) and the women are soapy without the vocabulary. It's a kind of chick lit with tragedy. Not the kind of people I would want to spend 9 hours with.
The narrator is excellent and did her best with this awful material.
You can probably tell I'm cross that I wasted a credit and can't believe I paid money for this rubbish. I tried to return it but because I'm having a credit break I wasn't allowed but will try again when it's over. It didn't play very well either, which didn't help. I was surprised to find the author has written several 'successful' books so someone must enjoy this stuff but I wouldn't risk trying her again.
I have to confess I didn't get to the end. I tried to force myself to listen on but an hour from the end I just couldn't take any more. So for all I know there may have been a surprise ending and the story may have redeemed itself.
Worst listen ever!

Slowest story ever
Lasted to Chapter 10 and realised that I didn’t hate myself enough to keep going. OMG! What was the editor doing - or did they skip that process? What a drag! I would actually like a refund because the reviews were BS. A little girl goes missing and for 10 chapters we follow the mother’s grief. That’s it for the first 10 Chapters!! Torture! No subplot! Just grief! I want to repeat those words for 10 Chapters to fully describe my annoyance with this author. If you don’t want to write a story - don’t write one! But don’t publish words that are not a story. And speed it up! God! I would like to punish you as I have been punished, waiting for a reward that never came! I gave up after Chapter 10. And who wrote the reviews? Your mother? The publisher? Whoever it was, they clearly didn’t hear or read the first 10 chapters. Perhaps they read a synopsis. Makes me doubt the veracity of the Audible reviews.

Better than I was expecting
Captivating from the beginning. Great narrator. Wasn't as predictable as I thought. Had me on edge, and the story wasn't smothered in clichés. One of the best I've listened to in a while.

Repettive, repetitive, repetitive
Did I mention how repetitive this book was? Look, there’s only so much a narrator can do to bring a book to life. If you were reading this book you could skip over the fact that multiple passages were repeated again and again and again. However hearing the narrator read every word and repetitive sentence over again and again again was just mind-numbing. I appreciate the author was trying to emphasise the fact that the mother was feeling guilt and playing the same scene over in her mind but it’s not necessary to treat the reader as so dumb that they can’t envisage this grief and the way a person responds to such actions themselves. The reader (and more importantly the listener) does not need to be beaten over the head to understand the point. To add insult to injury, the end of the book turns into a preaching sermon of how we should live our lives. If I wanted a sermon, I’d go to church.

Tamsin Kennard is an amazing story teller
Good story, a bit stressful to listen to. The narrator is a great story teller and very pleasant to listen to.

AMAZING
Completely unexpected. Loved it from start to finish. The very start was a tiny bit repetitive but still so good!

good but not great
a good story that had a completely predictable ending. I was waiting for a massive twist that didn't come. Slow to start with, however was still an easy listen, something that didn't take too much concentration as I'm driving into work

Very slow going
I am up to chapter 14 and am finding this very slow and repetitive. The narrator is great. The reviews are excellent so I will continue for a while at least and see what eventuates.
