Story
Hannah Stander is a consultant for the FBI - a futurist who helps the agency with cases that feature demonstrations of bleeding-edge technology. It's her job to help them identify unforeseen threats: hackers, AIs, genetic modification, anything that in the wrong hands could harm the homeland. Hannah is in an airport, waiting to board a flight home to see her family, when she receives a call from Agent Hollis Copper. "I've got a cabin full of over a thousand dead bodies," he tells her. Whether those bodies are all human, he doesn't say.

Story
For five years, Cason Cole has been a chew toy for a god. He walked away from his wife and son and devoted his life to a predator who holds nothing and no-one dear. Now, as the man he loves and hates lies dying at his feet, the explosion still ringing in his ears, Cason is finally free. For centuries, the swarming gods of the Earth were content to lounge in Heaven, forgetting the mortals they left behind; but 30 years ago, the all-powerful "Usurper" ejected them all. Now it's back to the bad old days: cults and sycophants, and the terrible retribution of the gods.

Five years ago, Coburn went to sleep - wasn't exactly planned - and he's just woken up to find most everybody in the world dead. And not cool, interesting dead like him; oh, no. Coburn looks basically human, and these guys...really don't. He likes blood, and they like flesh. He's smart; them, not so much. But they outnumber him by about a million to one, and their clotted blood cannot sustain him.

In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial even proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger.

Interesting read/listen

Publisher's Summary
It's Atlanta's senior year of high school, and she is officially infamous. Not only has she saved herself from a predator, brought down an untouchable dogfighting ring, and battled a pack of high school bullies, but she's also proclaimed to the Internet her willingness to fight for anyone who needs help. And Atlanta can't believe what's coming out of the woodwork. From an old friend to a troop of troubled girls with connections to a local fracking company, there's definitely fire in the water.
As always, the girl with the unforgettable name is not afraid to burn it all down if it means making things right. But as high school races toward its inevitable end and the hornets begin to swarm from all directions, Atlanta must decide how much of herself and her growing group of friends she is willing to risk...before it's too late.

Chuck Wendig is a master story teller.
What made the experience of listening to The Hunt the most enjoyable?
Atlanta Burns is the poster girl for kick-butt heroines. Completely awesome.
What other book might you compare The Hunt to and why?
Tough.
Maybe I'll go with a movie. If Dirty Harry was a female high school senior, he'd be Atlanta Burns.
What about Cris Dukehart’s performance did you like?
Brilliant. Accents are tough and she does them well.

Atlanta Smolders
The second entry in Chuck Wendig's Atlanta Burns series is almost exactly like the first. Transplanted into the rural Alabama of Pennsylvania, high schooler Atlanta Burns continues to stick up for the bullied and molested. This time, she takes on child prostitution, fracking, and gender identification.
I actually liked this follow-up more than the original. Tying the black and white issues into the gray area of fracking is a smart move. Most of all, the writing is tighter. There remains a big issue with believability -- a teenaged shotgun wielding vigilante hero who escapes any and all repercussions? Strictly wish fulfillment fantasy.
There also remains the idea that this is somehow YA fiction. I for one am keeping the teen readers in my house away from this. Atlanta is reckless, violent, drugged out, uninterested in bettering herself through education, antagonistic of all adults even when they want to help her, motivated solely by revenge, fascinated by and reliant upon firearms, mercenary. These are not messages I want my kids to see glorified. The ends do not justify the means.

Great story, really grabs you from the beginning.
Loved this series. The narrator has the Ruth Langmore via Ozark Netflix show vibe. It's one of the great parts of this audiobook. The author Chuck Wendig does it again with another suspenseful story with compelling characters. This book is well worth your time and your dollars.
