Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Great Story!! Cons: slow start & poor narration
- By Monica on 01-17-17
Publisher's Summary
The Hunter from the Woods marks the much-anticipated return of Michael Gallatin, the lycanthropic hero of Robert McCammon’s 1989 classic, The Wolf’s Hour. These all-new, interlinked stories offer a full measure of McCammon’s trademark narrative excitement, and comprise a fascinating composite portrait of a unique fictional creation.
The volume opens with a pair of brief glimpses into Michael’s early life in Russia and his initial recruitment into the British Secret Service. It ends with a haunting vision of the werewolf at twilight. In between, McCammon gives us three stellar novellas depicting different phases of Michael’s long, brutal war against Nazi Germany. "Sea Chase" is a nautical tale about the hazards of transporting a defecting German scientist to a place of sanctuary in England. "The Wolf and the Eagle" is the account of an unlikely friendship between rival "men of action" and a harrowing portrayal of a lethal forced march through the North African desert. "The Room at the Bottom of the Stairs" tells of an impossible, ultimately tragic love affair set in the embattled city of Berlin during the latter stages of the war.
Erotic, visceral, and filled with moments of desolating horror and unexpected warmth, The Hunter from the Woods is a triumph of imaginative storytelling. Like the best of McCammon’s earlier work, it offers intelligent, world-class entertainment. In the process, it shines a welcome new light on one of the most uncommon heroes in contemporary fiction.

Three Outstanding Novellas
The Hunter from the Woods is a McCammon marvel. This second installment in his outstanding lycanthrope series displays his talent as a master storyteller and writer.
The book contains three novellas: an action packed battle between a British merchant ship and undercover German battleship; two enemies, one a British spy and the other an ace German pilot, must struggle together and survive in a scorching Egyptian desert without water – against a very capable and deadly enemy; the invasion of Russia’s Red Army and impending devastation of Berlin will soon end Hitler’s war machine, but sparks of love, treachery, and death ignite and blaze brightly in Michael’s heart as both he and the city around him are blown to pieces.
Simon Prebble’s narration is simply superb.
If you’ve read this review then you will indeed enjoy this book.

Collection of Short stories or edited chapters??
Most of the "short stories" seemed to be chapters or parts of chapters, edited out of original book, "The Wolf's Hour". Especially, the 1st and 2nd stories and the very last story (possibly the original epilogue to first wolf book???)!
Well written, yes.
Excellent narrator, yes!
Would I buy another collection of short stories from Robert McCammon, NO!

it was a surprise to discover.
I had read the original book many years ago. I had no idea what you had written a second book. I found it well-rounded and a acceptable and cathartic ending. some people may be put off that the book jump back and forth a bit but that is consistent with the original book also. I recommend reading the wolf's hour before reading this one.

Not his usual style
I generally love McCammon. Wolfs Hour was one of my favorite all time books along with Swan Song. I've read another half dozen of his books and have loved every one if them. This one, unfortunately, is no where near what Wolfs Hour was. it was hard to get into the characters. It just didn't pull me in like most of his books do. That being said, the writing style is absolutely superb... as usual. McCammons descriptive scenes were spot on with his usual style. but the story felt like an afterthought to me. almost making it up as he went. Or a compilation of short stories. This is not uncommon with his usual style, however it really didn't pull itself together in the end like his books usually do. I just couldn't get into this one though the main character is one of my all time favorite characters. This was somewhat underwhelming.

Well worth your time
This was the second time I had read/listened to this book. I enjoy almost everything Mr.McCammon writes. This book is one book that he could write a dozen more books but I don't think he wants to do as Jim Butcher or Michael Connelly have done with their characters. I think both authors would like to kill off their character if they could, they are so tired of the genre but their reading public refuses to let them go. Even so, I wish Mr. McCammon would write more about Michael Gallentine.
My only criticism comes regarding the last two stories in the book. I think that Michael was out of character in falling in love. The opposing character was not his type and he would have been much more accepting of his role than what was portrayed.
The last story ended as though he was tired or writing or tired of the story line. In either case it was a poor ending to an excellent book.
I still recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy and drama.
The narrator was excellent. He convinced me that he was Michael Gallentine and the peril he was in. He brought the story to life.

Robert R. McCammon is my new found favourite
His writing is stellar and lyrical. I listened to Wolf's Hour and wanting more of McCammon's brilliant writing and Simon Pebble's eminent narration I bought this book. It fully lived up to my high expectations and rewarded me with 3 great stories that had me rooting for the hero and even shedding a small tear for some of the "evil!?" adversaries.
McCammon writes both great stories and great characters.

Great Short Stories
We learn more of Michael's life through tales at sea, in the desert and back at his adopted home, Wales.
The trip at sea was probably the best, having just watched "Black Sea", you could really appreciate how cramped, dangerous and tense everything was.

Good but not quite as good as the first
As per the title. It was still an enjoyable story but I suppose once you've heard one story about a werewolf/spy you're slightly less impressed by a second. Still, I would recommend it if you enjoyed the first as much as I did.

Mid 20th C. Werewolf Spy
Listen, here is an imaginative & interesting approach to the genre. The 3* rating doesn't mean it a mediocre; it just means things would've been done better. The book is written in such a way as to sell the movie rights.
Although, McCammon is a very competent writer, he’s not great and perhaps to make this type of book more profound & memorable, it needs slightly more talent, as, let’s face it, it is a rather tricky subject.
Simon Prebble’s narration is old school, educated, enunciated, clean, intelligent and with a class English accent.
