A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Some say the World Law itself is broken and that the world is falling apart. In comes Sam Hastern. His family has been cursed by one of these classes for the last 50 years. Publisher's Summary
A New York Times best seller!
A Publishers Weekly best seller!
A year has passed since the Tournament. Fletcher and Ignatius have been locked away in Pelt's dungeons, but now they must face trial at the hands of the Inquisition, a powerful institution controlled by those who would delight in Fletcher's downfall.
The trial is haunted by ghosts from the past with shocking revelations about Fletcher's origins, but he has little time to dwell on them; the graduating students of Vocans are to be sent deep into the orc jungles to complete a dangerous mission for the king and his council. If they fail, the orcish armies will rise to power beyond anything the Empire has ever seen.
With loyal friends Othello and Sylva by his side, Fletcher must battle his way to the heart of Orcdom and save Hominum from destruction...or die trying in this sequel to The Novice by Taran Matharu.

Engaging and Evocative, Thrilling and Hectic!
The continuation of the world I was getting pulled into did not disappoint. Some plot points and writing can be considered cliché, but with such a saturated style of writing, Matharu still makes a unique and diverse world with his own perspective on modern problems and biases while continuing a good story with some solid subversions that kept me entertained greatly.
What began in the Novice and was continued in the Inquisition has gotten me immediately ready to dive into the 3rd book! Well done indeed.

Want to like, but.....
I really want to like this series more — the main character, the magic system, and the overall world setup are interesting, but too many elements of the story just fail. The plot is blundered through without subtlety, and the villains so 2-dimensionally evil that they border on self-parody. While the setup is appealing, it is a bit too clear that the author leans on other stories a bit too transparently at times (Meso-American orcs, a demonological taxonomy that begins to sound like Pokémon, characters who give their demons out of place names from mythologies like Athena, Apophos, and Ra, etc). So close to a great series...
Of note, the excellent narrator helps the story along tremendously. It’s just not enough to lift this series from it’s self-inflicted mess.

Thought it was better than the first book.
The story starts with basically Law & Order: Fantasy Realms which was turned into a useful plot thread which weaves itself throughout the novel pretty well. Story still moves very fast but once I checked a map of this world understood why everything was moving so quick. Had at least one twist I didn't expect, so, well done. Still mostly just easy listening fantasy Pokémon. Oh, but there are some hormones this time.

Have some Identity Politics in your fantasy
What disappointed you about The Inquisition?
Hated it. So the major sin of this book, is that it pushes real life politics down your throat as the cost of the plot, the characters and the pace of the story. Even if you weren't being force fed identity politics as a reader, the story is very poor, and lacks the little bit of charm the first book had.
On top of all of this, you are left hanging at the end. The very simple mission offered as the center piece for plot, is drug out so they could make a third book out of it.
Any additional comments?
I want my money back

Wanted to like it, but kept falling asleep.
I was really hoping that this story would get better after the first book but it just come up generally lacking in too many areas. From the beginning with the long drawn out trials that end up being largely pointless in the end. Too the seemingly blundered together fantasy reality television show that they then enter into despite the extreme political risk involved with possibly losing key figures of political import. All on the vague possibility of maybe easing racial tensions, assuming NOTHING goes wrong and ends up destroying all chance at reconciliation.
The whole thing just seemed like a mash up of half developed story arcs all crammed together into a single book that often seems lost and rambling without any real direction or interesting plot development.

Doesn’t get better
How to bore an audience. Step one start an adventure book with a long tedious trial. Step two after the first trial start another tedious trial. Step three... I can’t remember step three cuz the first two steps put me into auto read mode for the rest of the book.
After my first review and initial qualms with the first book I really was hoping the Author would find a stride but sadly the mistakes from the first book are compounded in the second. I’m still going to get the third book just to complete the set but it feels more like eating Grandma’s traditional dish we all hate just to make her happy rather than diving into biscuits and gravy.
