Publisher's Summary

"Raises the bar for what epic fantasy should be." (Chloe Gong, author of These Violent Delights)

A ruthless princess and a powerful priestess come together to rewrite the fate of an empire in this “fiercely and unapologetically feminist tale of endurance and revolution set against a gorgeous, unique magical world” (S. A. Chakraborty).

Exiled by her despotic brother, princess Malini spends her days dreaming of vengeance while imprisoned in the Hirana: an ancient cliffside temple that was once the revered source of the magical deathless waters but is now little more than a decaying ruin.

The secrets of the Hirana call to Priya. But in order to keep the truth of her past safely hidden, she works as a servant in the loathed regent’s household, biting her tongue and cleaning Malini’s chambers.

But when Malini witnesses Priya’s true nature, their destinies become irrevocably tangled. One is a ruthless princess seeking to steal a throne. The other a powerful priestess desperate to save her family. Together, they will set an empire ablaze.

"An intimate, complex, magical study of empire and the people caught in its bloody teeth. I loved it.” (Alix E. Harrow, author of The Ten Thousand Doors of January)

"Gripping and harrowing from the very start." (R. F. Kuang, author of The Poppy War)

"Suri’s incandescent feminist masterpiece hits like a steel fist inside a velvet glove. Simply magnificent." (Shelley Parker-Chan, author of She Who Became the Sun)

"A fierce, heart-wrenching exploration of the value and danger of love in a world of politics and power." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

"This cutthroat and sapphic novel will grip you until the very end." (Vulture, Best of the Year)

"Lush and stunning.... Inspired by Indian epics, this sapphic fantasy will rip your heart out." (BuzzFeed News)

Critic Reviews

"The Jasmine Throne pulls you under, sweeping you away on a current of gorgeous prose and intricately imagined magic and politics. Filled with sharply-drawn characters who ache with longing: for peace, for war, for one another. It left me breathless." (Andrea Stewart, author of The Bone Shard Daughter)

"This powerful series opener will undoubtedly reshape the landscape of epic fantasy for years to come." (Booklist, starred review)

"The Jasmine Throne more than lives up to the hype with its rich and expansive world, compelling characters, cool magic system and Suri’s excellent writing, which holds it all together." (BookPage, starred review)

I had to stop

I usually don’t stop a book in midstream, but this one is like listening to paint dry, which, as you can probably imagine, is worse than watching it dry. I even had Alexa increase the speed.

When I read the blurb, I thought it sounded like a good book. But the book is based on an evil king who craves human suffering, and the more the better. And he likes to see and hear about it to the last, bloody, gorey detail. Even in the beginning, he attempts to get his sister to submit to the pyre because she is not "pure".

I might try to read it again when I’ve forgotten what I’ve read this time, but I doubt I’ll forget.

Loved It!!!

This book is the fantasy book I have been longing for. It has prominent queer characters (two main characters are lesbians), the romance doesn't overwhelm the rest of the story, the characters are very textured, the world building is amazing. There are POC!!!
I tend to be critical of novels with queer protagonist because the lack of visibility and quality content often causes LGBTQ people to lower their standards. This being the case, terrible books often get put on a pedestal or praised simply because they are readable and have queer characters.
This is not one of those books. This is so well written and tasteful. It doesn't rush into some unrealistic love story fraught with forced over the top sex scenes or long drawn out descriptions of longing.
The passion, the anger, the fear, the sadness it all feels so authentic. Not to mention the dialogue which sparkles. This author is so well rounded. The storylines are interesting. The relationship between Priya and Malini is layered and sweet and complex. And Buhmika, well I just love her so much, she is such a badass. I really can't wait for the next book.

Wow! The best writer and The best narrator!!!

GOD DAMN! So fucking good! I can’t wait for the second book! I enjoyed it so much and in love with Priya and Malini 🥰. Tasha Suri is an amazing writer and I am definitely going to read her all books.
Best writer ever. Every second is exciting!!!
I don’t even know how to explain how good is this narrator!!! Shiromi Arserio is the most amazing narrator I have listened to and she made the book more fascinating!!!
Both of them became my favorite writer and favorite narrator!!! And obviously my time's favorite book!

Great story and Narration

I listened to a podcast interview with the author Tasha Suri and purchased the ebook and audible narration right after that hoping the story would be as promising as the brief depiction during the podcast. The Jasmine Throne exceeded my expectations . Now my only gripe is that I will have to wait for book 2

Worth your time

This book was heart-achingly lovely, I've always been a Fantasy/Sci fi gal and when I discovered that there was a small niche of fantasy books out there with prominent LGBTQ+ (and POC in this case, bonus!) characters I embarked on a mission to read all the ones worth reading and in my humble opinion this one ranks very high on the list.

Narrator has no variation

I had to switch to a physical book. I was enjoying the story but the narrator has almost no variation between different characters, or even between dialog and the story in general. I was constantly getting mixed up about who was talking or whose POV it currently was.

Definitely worth the read

This was my first ever sapphic fantasy novel and I absolutely loved it. The magic system was very different and so interesting. Loved the setting and and strong main characters. The villains are a bit one dimensional… Hope that they will be explored a bit more in the second book.

Quite enjoyed the narrator as well, but sometimes a bit difficult to distinguish which character was speaking in a conversation. Might need to work on separating her character voices a bit.

Richly Woven

This story was beautifully written and the narrator did it justice. It’s a richly woven story that explores the pain and beauty of love, the weight of loss and responsibility, the difficult dance between duty and the heart’s wants, and the ways we find strength to journey through it all.
Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Amazing and Epic

Loved it! The characters are captivating, women so layered, complicated and angry. The rage of women in this book is just cheff kiss. A lot of politics, different kinds of rebelion and power, violence, abuse and survival. The worst things that people can do and the best.

Good start..

A very good start to a new fantasy series. The plot did seem to flag a bit at the end as the things are setup for book 2.

Narration was well done.

Beautiful unwinding story

There are so many layers to this book, so many unwinding moments. So many ah ha moments that explain earlier confusing conversations. The author has a way of explaining emotional without sounding dramatic but still illustrating the depth and complexity of humans. I really want to read the other books now!

Loved this book!

Great narration and the story was amazingly written. The world building, history and religions were so well done and the complex relationships between the characters had me wanting more. Can not wait for the next book, highly recommend!

A YA meditation on power and politics

This is a fantasy work of sustained imagination with a terrific narrator. The pace is a bit slow and there is a single ‘fade to black’ suggestion of sex. It is best understood as a young adult novel. The author struggles to develop the chemistry in the central lesbian relationship, though it isn’t a bad effort and is reasonably satisfying story with feminist and dystopian elements.
