Publisher's Summary
The Jewel means wealth. The Jewel means beauty. The Jewel means royalty.
But for girls like Violet, the Jewel means servitude.
Not just any kind of servitude. Violet, born and raised in the Marsh, has been trained as a surrogate for the royalty - because in the Jewel the only thing more important than opulence is offspring.
Purchased at the surrogacy auction by the Duchess of the Lake and greeted with a slap to the face, Violet (now known only as #197) quickly learns of the brutal truths that lie beneath the Jewel's glittering facade: The cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life.
Violet must accept the ugly realities of her existence…and try to stay alive. But then a forbidden romance erupts between Violet and a handsome gentleman hired as a companion to the Duchess' petulant niece. Though his presence makes life in the Jewel a bit brighter, the consequences of their illicit relationship will cost them both more than they bargained for.
Debut author Amy Ewing expertly crafts an enchanting story full of riches, rivalries, and riveting twists and turns that will keep listeners on the edge of their seats until the very end.

In spite of all its blunders, this was an OK read.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The pacing. The story really drags. At times it feels like it's picking up, but then it goes back to, well, dragging. It's basically a lot of wandering around the Duchess' home and attending balls and fancy dinners and dealing with the every day life of being a rich person's abused pet--I mean, surrogate. And then you have your tiny little plot points in between these to get the story going at a snail's pace. It's not until around 70% that the story finally starts to roll and get really interesting.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
It's a cliffhanger, which I have no problem with, except this one ended in like the middle of a scene. It was very abrupt, and the author meant it to be so, but I don't think it works for the reader.
What about Erin Spencer’s performance did you like?
She wasn't great on the guys' voices sometimes, but it was decent.
Do you think The Jewel needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
LOL.
Any additional comments?
The MC is a Mary Sue, which is the term for those characters that are oh-so-beautiful-and-perfect-and-special. I am usually annoyed by these type of MC's, but Violet was all right, despite her MarySueness. The romance was guess what? That's right. Insta-Love. Shocker. But hey, at least I can say it wasn't the worst insta-love I've ever read/listened to. (Alice in Zombileand & The Kiss of Deception, I'm looking at you!) And something else I should point out, the Duchess, which is your villain, was a well done, intriguing character. I liked her.
Bottom line: Not the best, certainly not the worst, but entertaining enough to keep on listening.

Left Me Feeling Annoyed
So I'm the type of reader who tends to get more into the romance connections than the main plot and story line- but for once that wasn't the case. This had to be the absolute worst build up to a romance and relationship I have ever read. It was so quickly moving and predictable and childish it was absurd. I understand that the main character is 16 and incredibly ignorant to relationships but it seemed like the author was as well. Absolutely 0 emotion was pulled from me other than annoyance when I was reading about them.
The story line is average- also very predictable if you're paying attention. It has a lot of potential & I'm hoping since the next book got better reviews it builds better. Even the ending was completely predictable. You can tell this is the authors first book. It's all laid out step by step almost like there was a time line of matter of fact events wrote about one at a time. Again, I felt like it was written for an 11 year old but then it's all clearly adult content so it leaves me baffled.
The performance by the narrator was sub par. Her voices, even the males, all sound the same. Violet and Ash sound exactly the same it's absurd. I do like her voice for Violet though.
Overall disappointing but I will still read the next one because I can see it got good reviews. The book has potential- I'm hoping the author learned from her mistakes on the sequel.

Had potential.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Probably not. I bought the book because of my obsession with dystopian fiction. The premise seemed like a nice mixture of The Selection and The Handmaid's Tale.
The beginning of the book was actual pretty good. I was intrigued. Then about half way through it was ruined with romance. Now I enjoy a little bit of romance in my novels but this was just set up so poorly that it was completely unbelievable and took me out of the story.
The book had potential to be a great science fiction novel. I will still hold out hope for the next one.

Toned down version of Handmaids Tale
I really have enjoyed this book! I liked it enough to purchase the whole series and finish it through. This is basically a toned down version of Handmaids tale, less graphic and not really hard to process on the mind. I liked the characters and story line.. the audio readers voice initially bothered me (somewhat high pitched and toned) but it wasn’t an end all be all! Recommend reading.

A Good book
A very interesting story. I like the modernized inventions mixed in a medieval world. Is like steampunk almost. I can imagine every scene in my head. I like it. The narrator is a bit monotone. There's little effort put into distinguishing voices. No emotion in her voice. Just reading.

A RARE JEWEL
I really enjoyed this story. The characters were engaging and the story flowed very well. I read "Hunger Games" series a while ago and I do like the dystopian type of stories, but there have been so many lately, I wasn't sure if I wanted to download this one. I went with the good reviews and I am happy I did. There are other books in this series that I recommend as well. Really good.
