Story
To the uninitiated, Savannah shows only her bright face and genteel manner. Those who know her well, though, can see beyond her colonial trappings and small-city charm to a world where witchcraft is respected, Hoodoo is feared, and spirits linger. Mercy Taylor is all too familiar with the supernatural side of Savannah, being a member of the most powerful family of witches in the South. Despite being powerless herself, of course. Having grown up without magic of her own, in the shadow of her talented and charismatic twin sister, Mercy has always thought herself content.

Connie Goodwin is an expert on America’s fractured past with witchcraft. A young, tenure-track professor in Boston, she’s earned career success by studying the history of magic in colonial America - especially women’s home recipes and medicines - and by exposing society's threats against women fluent in those skills. But beyond her studies, Connie harbors a secret: She is the direct descendant of a woman tried as a witch in Salem, an ancestor whose abilities were far more magical than the historical record shows.

In 1692, Bridget Bishop was hanged as a witch. Two hundred years later, her legacy lives on in the scions of two very different lines: one dedicated to using their powers to heal and help women in need; the other, determined to grasp power for themselves by whatever means necessary. This clash will play out in the fate of Annis, a young woman in Gilded Age New York who finds herself a pawn in the family struggle for supremacy. She'll need to claim her own power to save herself - and resist succumbing to the darkness that threatens to overcome them all.

Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Publisher's Summary
From the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Witching Savannah series comes the story of a young witch's quest to uncover her family's terrifying history...
Magic is seeping out of the world, leaving the witches who've relied on it for countless centuries increasingly hopeless. While some see an inevitable end of their era, others are courting madness - willing to sacrifice former allies, friends, and family to retain the power they covet. While the other witches watch their reality unravel, young Alice Marin is using magic's waning days to delve into the mystery of numerous disappearances in the occult circles of New Orleans. Alice disappeared once, too - caged in an asylum by blood relatives. Recently freed, she fears her family may be more involved with the growing crisis than she ever dared imagine.
Yet the more she seeks the truth about her family's troubled history, the more she realizes her already-fragile psyche may be at risk. Discovering the cause of the vanishings, though, could be the only way to escape her mother's reach while determining the future of all witches.

Bad audio made this annoying to listen to
Bad audio made this annoying to listen to- frequently the readers voice changed significantly enough for me to wonder if this was a different character or something. I think it must have been re-recorded, but there was such discontinuity it was severely distracting. Multiple times I went back to redirect my focus, thinking I had tuned out or something, but that was never the case. Just didn’t make sense and made the story come across very choppy.

Meandering story ruined by narrator
I really wanted to like this book, but had two significant challenges. One is that the story takes a long time to get going and there are endless female characters with similar names who are mostly all ancient witches, so it's a bit hard to keep track. Maybe better left for my Kindle. This makes the second issue that much more annoying, which is the narrator. If you are narrating a book about New Orleans, which makes particular mention of the idiosyncratic local pronunciations, wouldn't you be the slightest bit curious, as a narrator of audiobooks, to get the pronunciations right? Maybe but not if you're an audiobook narrator who can't even pronounce commonplace English words correctly. Ugh. So lazy it made me have to stop listening because I was getting frustrated.

Love the story, but the narrator needs to learn how words are pronounced.
Maybe it’s my degree in English, but come on people, if you’re going to work as a narrator, you should at least know how to pronounce the words.
In fairness, Ms. Moss did a very good job otherwise, but the flow is interrupted by the consistent mispronunciations. Look up the word or ask someone.

Meandering
I’m usually okay with a meandering storyline but with this narrator it’s almost impossible to follow. Her mispronunciations were so awful that I completely forgot where I was and the editing (?) was horrible; chiming in with a different tone of voice so that I wasn’t sure which character I was supposed to be hearing.
I purchased the second book as well and I’m REALLY hoping it isn’t more of the same.

Big Disappointment- Too meandering and not enough focus
I didn’t realize when I bought this book that it was the first in a trilogy and not a stand alone story. My last listen was a bust so I was really hoping for strong story that would hold my interest. This wasn’t it.
Although the premise for the story is nice, there are too many different points of view and wandering back and forth between characters for my taste. Also, the plot was way too slow to hold my interest in the “can’t put it down” way that I was hoping for. This was slow as molasses and because the point of view kept changing it made the pace even slower and harder to follow. A few times I slipped back in the narrative because I thought I had missed something, but it was just another change of pov which made the story seem choppy and disjointed.
I really didn’t want to start another trilogy where the rest of the series isn’t even written yet because I hate to be left hanging for how ever many years it takes the author to finish. But I would have been ok with that if the book itself made me want to continue with the rest of the story. This was too slow to make me
consider another book by this author - thanks Audible for your return policy! Hoping my next listen is a winner.

slow building but great, narration/editing horrid
Story took a while to build, but it was well worth it. The narration however, was horrible at times. They frequently added in single words and/or an entire sentence! The change in the authors reading style varied throughout the book which I found unsettling and often threw me out of the story. I've decided to read the next book until I can determine if they have the same narration/editing issue.

My first of this author not my last
Good book and I can't wait for the next one. Because of time constraints I flipped back and forth between audio and digital, that said I liked the narrator. Really kind of a weird book but I liked it all the same. The ending has a good setup for the next book. Some really creepy characters and some that I liked quite a bit. The plot has a couple real interesting twists.
I'm going to go back and read his Witching Savannah series.
