Story
Until the mass hysteria of the seventeenth century, accusations of witchcraft in England were rare. However, four royal women, related in family and in court ties - Joan of Navarre, Eleanor Cobham, Jacquetta of Luxembourg, and Elizabeth Woodville - were accused of practicing witchcraft in order to kill or influence the king. In Royal Witches, Gemma Hollman explores the lives and the cases of these so-called witches, placing them in the historical context of 15th-century England, a setting rife with political upheaval and war.

Incredibly enjoyable listen!
This author does a wonderful job bringing Anne to life. I couldn’t stop listening and finished this book in a day and a half. All Tudor fans will enjoy this one, especially the way it begins and ends- with Henry on his death bed... no spoilers of course.
Narration was excellent.
I’ve listened to every Tudor biography and much of the relevant historical fiction available on Audible. From a young age, I’ve been captivated story of Anne Boleyn. The nearly decade long love story that ends so quickly in her murder, only a few years after they finally were married. I don’t believe for a second that Anne was guilty of adultery, yet it has always haunted me that the king could behead her and so many of his own close friends on false evidence. With this in mind, the author note and conclusion at the end of the book was very intriguing, as she states that there’s new evidence which sheds light on this very issue.
I’m hoping that new histories and/or biographies will come out soon that sheds light on the new evidence!

Flawed But Overall OK
I admit I didn't like this book at first and almost called it quits about a third of the way in. The narrator very oddly spoke occasional words with what sounded like a Spanish accent and the writer's depiction of Anne's thoughts during her courtship with Henry VIII, where she's this fragile flower trying to protect her chastity, doesn't ring true with who Anne really was at all. Anne Boleyn was an ambitious, common knowledge "party girl" while part of the French Court and had at least two affairs with notoriously promiscuous men before Henry. Henry himself said he found out after he married Anne that she had lied about her virginity. And I don't think he said that just because he wanted to be rid of her. What I did like about the book was that it begins and ends with her standing over Henry's death bed, taunting and scaring the tar out of him. I thought that was a cool invention. And some of her inner dialog, especially during her last days in the Tower before execution, could very well be close to the truth of what Anne was thinking and going through emotionally. If you are interested in this book, I would almost suggest you first read "Lady in the Tower" by Allison Weir, which is a fantastically detailed non fiction account of the last days of Anne Boleyn. I think knowing all the true facts and details about Anne's last few months of life would enrich the experience of reading this book. Although you'll also be more aware of its errors. OK read, nonetheless.

Really impressive and mesmerizing.
I “opened” this book expecting the usual historical drama and ended up finding something much more. The characters are well developed and their emotions stir your heart. The first few lines steeped with venom and later you grow to love and sympathize with those feelings. I’m not often impressed from beginning to end, but here I really was. I look forward to reading more from this author and seeing their take on history. I really really enjoyed this. The audio narration was also really well done. Highly recommended!

A new take
For the most part we read that Anne is an evil adulterous “B” who wrecked a marriage and who was herself not a nice person.
This book puts a whole new spin being written from her point of view and paints her as an impressionable young lady discovering herself and life’s joys.
It was a nice change seeing this side of the coin for a change.
I feel the narrator sometimes lost Anne’s voice and couldn’t remember which she was using. But other than that very easy to follow and understand.
Gripping book. Finished in a day and a half. Wish the author had would write about more of the wives of Henry viii

I really enjoyed the writing of the story, it was paced pretty well for the majority of the book. really the only complaint I have is with the performance of the voice of Anne. Every time she would suddenly slip into a French accent I felt like it was out of place. The accent itself sounded good but I felt it was only added in the book so the narrator could either prove she could do it or because she had a habit of doing so naturally. Overall though I was happy with the whole experience.

entertaining
The way the story was told was good. nothing new really but no wild invention either. The narrator was only ok, sometimes her accent changes to a weird half french half Spanish accent for no reason and it's distracting. Her portrayal of Anne I felt was a little off. Sometimes she was a poor innocent draw in by the king, sometimes she was a scheeming power monger. It can't be both. I think she was very clever and calculating, so seeing her as a victim in the beginning was a little off for me. The ending was good! Worth the listen!

History intertwined with a tale well told
As a lover of history I really enjoyed this well researched and well written and often fascinating insight into the life of Anne Boleyn told from her own point of view. Solid historical research underpins and interweaves with some skillful 'fiction' to bring the characters of the story to life in a very real way. Even though the ending and much of the story is known when you start the book, you find yourself drawn into Anne's world and all the plotting and planning and struggles for power in the Tudor court and the frustrations and emotions of both Henry and Anne. I will look forward to more in the series.

Hmmmmm...!
Nothing wrong with the story of course. One of the most dramatic in English history. however the telling of it was a bit lack lustre. I suppose when you're going in to bat against Hillary Mantel. Its a tough number. I felt that some of the facts were a bit like warmed over pizza - just rearranging them didn't make it compelling, or incisive, or exciting.
When Anne was in the Tower - would she really be bothered about Henry not being there to kiss her 'duckies'. Personally I think not.
Still, if you like that sort of thing. I can imagine some people would find the book enjoyable. I certainly couldn't write anything as good. so well done!

Outstanding performance by Alex Lee and a riveting story
I’ve read many accounts about Ann Boleyn but this is the best so far. Told in the first person Lee’s voice with its subtle French accent brings the story and Ann herself to life. The author has successfully created plausible psychological truth within the characters of Ann and Henry as well as the other key characters in this tragic story.

Finally, an Anne with a bit of depth
While I am, admittedly, very biased as I am a fan of Anne Boleyn and always have been, it never ceases to irk me that she is constantly portrayed as a harpy who was only interested in the title of "Queen". This is the most realistic portrayal of Anne I may have come across, particularly in fiction. Flawed? Yes. Human? Also yes. Arnopp highlights not only that it took her time to fall in love with a King who outwardly wooed her, but also (finally!) portrayed her as extremely intelligent, determined, and very interested in the politics of the time.
