Publisher's Summary

From the author of A Witch in Time comes a magical story spanning from Jazz Age Paris to modern-day America of family secrets, sacrifice, and lost love set against the backdrop of a mysterious circus.

Paris, 1925: To enter the Secret Circus is to enter a world of wonder - a world where women weave illusions of magnificent beasts, carousels take you back in time, and trapeze artists float across the sky. Bound to her family's circus, it's the only world Cecile Cabot knows until she meets a charismatic young painter and embarks on a passionate affair that could cost her everything.

Virginia, 2004: Lara Barnes is on top of the world until her fiancé disappears on their wedding day. When her desperate search for answers unexpectedly leads to her great-grandmother’s journals, Lara is swept into a story of a dark circus and ill-fated love.

Soon secrets about Lara’s family history begin to come to light, revealing a curse that has been claiming payment from the women in her family for generations. A curse that might be tied to her fiancé’s mysterious disappearance

"At times decadent and macabre, The Ladies of the Secret Circus is a mesmerizing tale of love, treachery, and depraved magic percolating through four generations of Cabot women." (Luanne G. Smith, author of The Vine Witch)

"Ambitious and teeming with magic, Sayers creates a fascinating mix of art, The Belle Époque, and more than a little murder.” (Erika Swyler, author of The Book of Speculation)

Truly enjoyed this book & the narrator

Excellent story and excellent narration. A story with substance, intrigue and even a little humor. Every character was interesting. I even got a few smiles from Althazar (spelling??) The narrator voice was very expressive. You felt whatever emotion was coming from the character she was portraying. And all this with no hot & heavy sex scenes. I've grown weary of soooo many books with no substance to the story and predictable characters and situations that only offer one hot sex scene after another and not much else. This is a good book.

Not a fan of the narrator

I hate to review a story based on the narration, but the narration is distracting. I really don't think I can listen to this again and that's saying something. I never listen to a book only once, but I just cannot get over the narrator's accents. A Witch in Time handled the multiple characters in a better way.

The missing chapters appear to be fixed

I redownloaded a few days ago and the chapters that ended abruptly have been repaired/replaced with the complete versions.

A Diabolical, Entrancing, and Macabre Love Story

Kudos!!! It started slow and took me a while to get sucked into the mystery. I'm glad I stuck with it. It was a very unique dark fantasy that intertwined a web of emotions that left me in a tangled mess; an emotional rollercoaster of sorts. I found myself feeling like a yoyo being tossed up and down with feelings ranging from falling into an abyss to cloud 9 thrills. I was left in shock, doubt, intrigue, exhausted, entranced, puzzled, angry, forlorn, addicted, terrified, elated, pity, homicidal, intoxicated, along with so many more emotions. Althacazur is a name you will not soon forget. He will pierce your mind, heart, and soul with his minacious repertoire. You will never view a circus in the same way again. Brace yourself for a tumultuous ride - best to buckle yourself in and hold on tight! Oh...don't forget to breathe!!!

very Enjoyable

This book was very good. I really enjoyed this author's first book, too A Witch in Time. S
he employs a good use of flashbacks and memories to tell her story. I don't usually enjoy those kind of books but this one was really good and the magic too.

Totally personal probably

The performance sounds a bit like a bay talk to me. Can not get past that.

The narrator cannot speak french

In fairness, I should have read this book. The story is fine. The narrator was fine, except when she was attempting anything French. I am always surprised when narrators are poorly chosen in regards to foreign languages, but this was the worst one that I have experienced.
