Publisher's Summary

Hazel Hughes has spent her life believing she is a Medium - someone who can talk to ghosts. But as of yet, that skill has remained frustratingly elusive. She is also suffering from a reoccurring childhood dream of someone who looks almost exactly like Hazel, but this dream version of herself is slowly going mad.

Sam MacInnes is a talented surgeon who runs in the highest social circles thanks to his family's position and history. When Sam hires Hazel to assist him with his medical practice, he is immediately drawn to her intelligence, wit, and beauty. Their potential relationship is derailed one evening when a mysterious count arrives in London and reveals to Hazel the truth about her past: she was abducted at birth and her twin sister has fallen dangerously ill.

Hazel agrees to travel to Romania with Count Petrescu in order to save her sister, and Sam insists on accompanying her. The count has secrets, though, and the journey grows more sinister with every mile that draws Hazel closer to her homeland. Even as her feelings for Sam become deeper and more complicated, she fears she might not survive the quest to save her sister with her heart intact, not to mention her life. She must learn to draw on gifts she doesn't know she has if they are going to ever return home again.

Hazel and Sam must fight their way past dark magic, clockwork beasts, and their own insecurities as they try to reach her sister in the impenetrable Coppergate Tower before time runs out.

Weak performance almost ruins it...

The narrator was breathy and kind of trailed off at the ends of sentences, and she didn't really distinguish different voices. Made it really hard to listen to. The story concept was good, but poorly executed. Most of the interesting Rapunzel-y things didn't happen until the last hour. None of the twists were surprising. Definitely my least favorite of the series.

Not my favorite

Unfortunately I found this story lacking.

The idea of the story was good. The character were developed well , and I liked that she brought back previous characters from book 1. However the story seamed to drag on and then suddenly rushed in the end. It was clean and I greatly appreciate that but over all I definitely did not fall in love with the love story.
Perhaps because he did not rescue her.

Book 1 and 2 were better written. Perhaps book 4 might be?

Good story bad narration

The book storyline is fine but it is ruined by the narrator. She sounds breathy and stresses the weirdest parts of each sentence. She doesn’t do the best inflections. It is very distracting and detracts from the story.

Loved this book!

Mystery, Adventure, and Romance weave beautifully throughout this book.

Strong believable characters, beautiful wit, and a clean exciting romance. Throw in a little danger and magic for fun!

Initially took a minute to get used to a different reader than her other two books in the series but came to love this reader just as much.

Highly recommend this book as well as the whole series!!

So much imagination and wonder

Nancy Campbell Allen has done it once more. She has drawn me into a whole other world that I don't want to return from. I love the characters and how she builds the plot to the climax keeping you guessing the entire time.
Elizabeth Knowelden has a breathy voice that bugged me. As the story wore on, however, her ability to truly perform the story, with the right cadence and tonality, was brilliant and I didn't notice as much.

how do you write aucy fun and engagi f rimances. The characters seem alive to me. Their emotions are not constantly changing like juvenile charactrs but VERY MUCH like adults. Thanks. wish you and your family have a great CHRISTMAS , new year and you find a way yo do more books FASTER.!!!!

Good, just not my favorite of a great series

I loved and adored the other books in the series so much, that this one doesn't shine as brightly in comparison.

I think Sam and Hazel are good to and for each other, and I root for them. I like that Hazel and Merrit save each other while Sam is on a side quest.

I feel like there are moments that Hazel's brilliance is turned off for dramatic purposes. This is especially frustrating when Sam needs her and she spends time crying rather than healing. I would believe that more if healing were a new talent for her, but she has been working in Sam's surgery, and while I accept that your own true love being in danger adds stress, it also adds motivation. It seems odd to me that she was able to perform a new task under duress for her captor but delayed a familiar task with a desirable outcome for her beloved. If we had a longer epilog, this probably wouldn't stand out so much to me. I am happy we saw the wedding, but what of Merrit's new life outside of the tower? I hope she will get further developments in a future book.

This is still a 4.5 to me! It's only shadowed by the others in the series, because I just enjoyed them so much. I absolutely love this series and really hope to see it continue!

Really enjoyed it!

I wasn’t sure how it was going to end when it got to the castle and stuff started happening but it was a clever twist and again there were such sweet characters that it was so lovely to hear them develop and interact with each other!

Passable story

The story was interesting but some parts were quite messy in terms of timeline. The narrator's voice was too whispery and breathy for my liking. At times she sounds like she was reading to herself and her voice trails off. I struggle to finish the book due to the reading style.
