After dying and being reborn into a world that's built like a video game, Jim has found himself stuck in a very old-world style new-player zone for low-level adventurers. Unfortunately, the zone fell out of use centuries ago, and no one told the monsters they were supposed to take it easy on the Noobs. Even worse, the only new player around is Jim. For eons, conquering dungeons has been the most efficient way to become a strong adventurer. Although not everything is as straightforward as it seems. Several questions have always plagued the minds of those who enter these mythical places of power: why are there so many monsters? Where do the amazing weaponry and heavy gold coins come from? Why does the very air fill with life-giving energies? Cal has all of the answers to these age-old questions, for a very simple reason. He is a Dungeon Heart.

An inn is a place to rest, a place to talk and share stories, a place to find adventure, or a starting ground for quests and legends. It is in this world, at least. To Erin Solstice, an inn seems like a medieval relic from the past. But here she is, running from Goblins and trying to survive in a world full of monsters and magic. She’d be more excited about all of this if everything wasn’t trying to kill her. But an inn is what she’s found, and so that’s what she becomes; an innkeeper, who serves drinks to heroes and monsters. Mostly monsters. But it’s a living, right?

Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

For The Mist!
If your looking for adventure and some laughs, this book is the one for you. It introduce a lot of progression among world as well as characters.. There quest that link to other quest just like proper video game fashion. Personality are pretty spot on, Nick Podel did and awesome Job delivering the characters in Audible. Speak of which main character make alot of references which is refreshing. Give it a chance like i did. I'am Sure you'll become a fan.

Less Story More Interruptions
This was my first audio book in the LitRPG genre. I don't know if it's just this book, or the genre, that didn't quite work for me. The story was good, but character development was ordinary at best. But that's not the biggest problem. The main issue is the constant and very very long status updates that break up the narration/progress of story. The protagonist goes about his tasks, accomplishes something, and the narration gets interrupted by something like "Congratulations. You have accomplished X task. You have earned X points and X rewards and your status is now X and your strength is now X and your health is now X and you have achieved level X in X skills..." Such updates happen too frequently and go on for far too long. If this were a print book I could skip it, but in audio book format you don't even have that option. This completely fractured the listening experience for me. As for the character development: one book into the series, I am not emotionally invested in the protagonist's story enough to buy book 2. Sorry, but pass.

Overrated, somewhat charming
Got half way through, had fun with the first quarter, then I wondered, “what’s the point?” Waited until 50%, I saw a trend. Just literature dopamine rushes and character progressions, and then, like a bible being lobbed like a grenade, came the explosive emergent cringe worthy politics of the average leftist peasant, “it doesn’t usually get more cringe worthy and self unaware. This has been fun and it will be more better than this.” I thought. Nope the plot isn’t truly about transdimensional demon gods of Shinto pandemonium, it’s all about that multiculturalism and evil conservatives being ignorant rich bigots, ironically, as the main character is looking for ‘colorful’ cheap labor to risk their lives for him on the troll infested frontier. Real cringe. I’m used to the incredible inability to understand oppositional view points of right wingers, by almost everyone, but why would you drop it on the reader half way through when your story seems to be talking about cosmic evils and corruptions, then suddenly inject the existential need for,”be nice to kids that don’t look like you, and that may have fed your human kind to trolls, or rabid wolves.” Anyways, I feel like a fool to have not seen that coming, even if there’s no way I could have. Overall, I rate this 2 soy beans out of five blue arm pit haired, stunning and brave college campus woman’s rights evangelists, out of 5. Skyrim belongs to the Nords. Will be exchanging. As if I need even more of this brain cancer in my life. Fun dopamine story though, before it’s story got full of big soy.

This was a wonderful experience. The story moved along well, with seeds of a much bigger story still to come! Great humor and character interaction.

The Land
This will be a review of the whole series not just the first book.
This LITRPG series is in the top 3 easily, it writes off the earth side of it in the first 20 min and gets strait to it, which i cant fault it for. The main man in this is giving some OP traits right out of the gate. All long term stuff nothing like a OP sword no just more point per level and the skill to learn any skill. there are a few other but i'm not going to sit here and type his character sheet out.
You know hes going to be a long term power house.
This book has gore not in unchecked amounts but revilement to what damage and spell was used. Also in the later books there is ............... you can be shocked like i was. You can feel the pain unknowing as well.
the story arks quickly and there is a lot of opened ended quests. if i could read his full quest book i would uninstall because i know there is not enough days in a year to do all those side quest. In all its a LITRPG its no Stephen king story line its a quick hardcore levelling story and some city building.
Also voiced by Nick Podehl , wicked performance and one of my favourites a long side RC-Bray

Father of LitRPG my foot.
What disappointed you about The Land: Founding: A LitRPG Saga?
The blurb declares the author the "father of litRPG", apparently this is a title he has self-declared with no basis whatsoever. Far from being the first American voice in the genre, his work is not revolutionary in any way.
The book is full of constant pop-culture references, dick jokes and other juvenile and very-American humour that make the main character sound less like a hero and more like any 17 year old boy on reddit.
What will your next listen be?
Something in the litRPG genre by a different author!
Which character – as performed by Nick Podehl – was your favourite?
The way Nick voiced the Prince was excellent, but Nick Podehl never disappoints. Shame he got such bad material to read.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Land: Founding: A LitRPG Saga?
All the pop culture references and teenage jokes that make it read like a YA novel instead of epic fantasy. He's in a world where LITERALLY NO ONE understands the references, ugh.
Any additional comments?
Skip this guy and read an author who actually earns their praise instead of inventing it. Great authors don't have to yell about how great they are, their work speaks for itself.

Good Book! B.W.R.
Drawn into "reading" again. It was just too short, specially when it can be listened to everywhere

Podehl does a terrific job.
The story is great, but a tad dense in information for the audiobook medium. Nick Podehl's delivery is fantastic.

Fantastic series
I got the first book on Audible on Friday, by the end of Monday i have finished book 3 and am on to book 4, I have book 5 and 6 already in my library waiting as I know I will of finished it in no time, the reference and the way the characters talk to each other in this series are fantastic, it is a very natural and is closer to how a lot of gamers would talk to each other, I can't wait to find out what happens in the next book.

enjoyable, but not amazing with dishonest author
if you use fakespot.com on any of aleron Kong's books on Amazon you can clearly see that aleron kong or people he employs are artificially inflating his 5 star reviews as well as using slur campaigns and attacks coordinated to silence critics and vote that more honest reviews are unhelpful, so whilst I somewhat enjoyed this series, I'm now forced to give it an abysmal review to both reflect my disappointment in Aleron Kong at his dishonest and bad faith business practices, as well as do my small part in counteracting his devoted legion of monkeys (and perhaps even boys) that are employed and coordinated via his Facebook page amongst other means. If you think I am making this up then you are a sheep, as a few good Google searches, Reddit or fakespot.com make the truth visible if you bother searching.
For my actual rating, the story is a solid 3/5, the author has very little talent towards writing, but makes up for that with incredibly detailed world building. The performance by Jeff Hayes smooths over many of the authors flaws in writing style and he deserves 5/5 for giving the performance life even where the books were lacking. I enjoyed the books 4.5/5, but I truly love fantasy and litrpg both, and would objectively only give the story an honest rating of 3/5. All that being said though, my rating of the author would be 1/5 or lower, due to his arrogance, pride and dishonesty. Not to mention the number of deadlines he has missed just for the release of book8, but that's neither here nor there when compared to how he dishonestly manipulates ratings and reviews for profit and fame. Shame on you Aleron Kong, I may enjoy your books, but I'm only 1 step away from boycotting your future works!
TLDR: I really enjoyed the series, but objectively it's very average and the author has been shown to be heavily manipulating his ratings and reviews... Now watch as his team of worker monkeys bury this unbiased, critical review in with "unhelpful" markers... please vote helpful if you found this to be informative

If you're not a gamer beware of style
I didn't like the frequent 'stat updates' and gamer style of the story. It takes away from the flow of the book and makes it difficult to get into.

There are much better options in the GameLit genre
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
That mountain seems too high to climb.
Has The Land: Founding: A LitRPG Saga put you off other books in this genre?
If this was the first novel I had read in the LitRPG/GameLit genre, i would have been put off. I certainly would not have had the same excitement I had when I read my first novel in this new genre, written by one of the Russian authors who coined the genre name, LitRPG. There are so many better examples in the LitRPG/GameLit genre.
How could the performance have been better?
The performance was okay, however it was completely ruined by the narrator’s use of sound effects. The constant and repititive bells ringing as the MC levelled up made it impossibke to listen to the book before bed as my partner could hear the noises through my noise cancelling headphones and I was unable to relax and listen to the story. The noises constantly broke my immersion.
What character would you cut from The Land: Founding: A LitRPG Saga?
The main character. I didn’t like the guy, which made it very hard to like the book. He had no back story and seems completely unphased by his new reality and the life he has left behind. His humour is sophmoric and he lacks any deeper inner life.
Any additional comments?
I wanted to like this audiobook but it had none of the elements, like a compelling, layered storyline and likeable characters that I care about, that make me lose myself in a story.

so tedious
when playing an RPG I find the constant popups an irritating interruption to gameplay. when reading about an RPG I imagine I would find it even less interesting, but soon over it like I would in the game, but when *listening* to these stats be read out mechanically over and over again I wanted to jump on front of a train. I also found the natural accent of the narrator jarringly American.

Social Disconnect
Feels like it's written by the father of a gamer. Such a boring story, and the references to now old pop culture makes this story terrible.

Not worth your time
The story was a bit bland and the sound effects were very annoying. The was also a lot of repetitive content, like spending minutes listening to a list being read. would not recommend this as an audiobook, may be okay in print

Rubbish
Kept on waiting for it to get better. Terrible story full of plot holes and a waste of time. I had just finished a Brandon Sanderson before picking this up which probably led to the huge feeling of dispointment. No where near the same league of writing.

That’s 4 hours I’ll never get back
This book was the worst piece of rubbish I have saver encountered, the fact that someone took the time to write RPG stats into a book and then repeat them over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, made it frustrating at the least. I had to turn it off after about 4 hours.
The story is thin on actual, well, story. If this is the future of contemporary fantasy literature the world is in dire straights!!!!! I’d also like to know how it got a 4.5 star rating on audible
