It is an age when Valdemar is yet unfounded, its organization of Heralds yet unformed, and magic is still a wild and uncontrolled force. Skandranon Rashkae is perhaps the finest specimen of his race, with gleaming ebony feathers, a majestic wingspan, keen magesight, and sharp intelligence. Courageous, bold, and crafty, Skan is everything a gryphon should be. He is the fulfillment of everything that the Mage of Silence, the human sorcerer called Urtho, intended to achieve when he created these magical beings to be his champions, the defenders of his realm.

Story
On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is...different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight.

Love the book, but narrator lost her accent...
I LOVE this book. I have the hard copy at home, and was excited to find it so I could listen to it while I drive.
The narrator starts out great. And she's (the narrator) great when she's not "doing voices". Originally, the characters start off with kindof... a peasant's brogue accent. 10/10 sounds great.
But shortly in, when she starts getting to more emotional scenes, the main character's accemt turned into a southern belle. Then it turned into some kind of Louisiana bayou-esque accent. Then it would switch back to the original. Every time the accent has changed so far has been incredibly jarring and happens during many of the "peak" moments of the story. If there's another option for a narrator to buy, I would say try a different narrator.
Again, this BOOK is fabulous. And the narrator had a good voice - she just needs consistancy when she gets to exciting dialogue in the story because the changing accent is so jarring and annoying.

I waited for years for this book to be Narrated.
I wish they had found a narrator worthy of the job. A story is told, but it isn't anywhere near as entertaining as when I've read it myself over the years. Rune does not come alive for me.
This story is simple, easy, an escape that soon is with friends. Buy the paper copy or even digital first. Get the most out of it.

A nice simple Bardic Tale
I remember absolutely loving this book, but upon listening 30yrs later, I see all the narrow statements and simple beliefs. Certainly good for preteen, young adult and fluff reading, and you will definitely want more, but don't come in thinking you will find epic magics and complex stories.
Rune's story up until she finds herself paying taxes is probably my favorite part of the entire book. It gets a bit muddy and slow in the final third of the book, but still a decent story overall. Christa Lewis does a nice job of reading this story out. I can't wait to get to the next one!

Great story, shame about the accents!
I know the story and love the story. Unfortunately I listened to this despite the narrator not because of them. Absolutely the worst character accents that are some terrible mish-mash of what the narrator thinks Irish and English people sound like and it wavers all over the place with inconsistent sounds. Please, if you can’t do a good accent, then don’t try. I hope more of the Bardic Voices series are recorded by a different narrator!
