Publisher's Summary
I'll tell you something, something important. Love is a decision. Not a feeling. That's what you young people don't realise. That's why you're always off divorcing each other. No offence, dear.
So decrees the formidable Connie Thrum of Scribbly Gum Island. She is the chief decision-maker of a rather unconventional family and her word is law. It's been over 70 years since Connie and her sister Rose visited their neighbours and found the kettle boiling and a baby waking for her feed, but no sign of her parents. The 'Munro Baby Mystery' still hasn't been solved and tourists can visit the abandoned home, exactly as it was found in 1932.
But now Connie has passed away and the island residents ponder her legacy. Sophie Honeywell is looking down the barrel of her 40th birthday and still hoping for that fairytale ending. Her beautiful new friend Grace, the Munro Baby's grand daughter, can't tell anyone what she hopes for. It would be too shocking.
Meanwhile, a frumpy housewife makes a pact with a stranger, an old lady starts making her own decisions and a family secret finally explodes on an extraordinary night of mulled wine, fire-eating, and face-painting - The Last Anniversary.

So sad it’s over!
I love this author’s books, yet I don’t quite know how to describe them… “slice of life”? I've read Little Big Lies, The Husband’s Secret, What Alice Forgot, Three Wishes and love them all.
I was so absorbed in this tale that I could have gone on reading it for days! I’d give it 6 out 5 if I could for the sheer entertainment it provided me - I did not want to put it down!
I did have a bit of trouble keeping track of how everyone was related to each other, but that’s typical for me; it did not ruin the story.
I can’t wait to sink my teeth into another one of her excellent stories, sadly for me there is only one left that I have not read: The Hypnotist’s Love Story.
I hope she’s busy writing more!

A Brilliant Book
The Last Anniversary is Lianne Moriarty at her best. It is a well written, humorous and entertaining novel that, whilst touching on serious issues, still keeps the reader engaged throughout.
The mystery of Enigma's parents disappearance is a little predictable but the book still has a humorous and unexpected twist.

Any additional comments?
I don't really get the mixed reviews (on various sites) from readers who say they loved Liane's other books, but this one - not so much. Some say it was necessary to suspend their disbelief at aspects of this story. Speaking as someone who has been around a while (aged 55), I didn't find this to be the case at all. If its a reference to the story of the baby and missing parents (I'll say no more to avoid spoilers), it should be born in mind that the incident took place in 1932! I didn't find anything implausible here and I loved and cared about the characters. In my opinion, this book is up to standard for Liane and I found it a very enjoyable listen.

Disappointing from a usually entertaining author
Bought this as a "daily deal" after enjoying two of this author's other books. Wish I hadn't bothered!
This is essentially a short story stretched far too thinly into a novel and it shows. The 'mystery' at its heart is very predictable, the characters are like cardboard cutouts and to a person, unloveable to boot. The central theme of childlessness / parentage is grating - for heaven's sake, have women not advanced beyond this supposed yearning for self- fulfilment that can only be achieved via motherhood - and the treatment of post natal depression is, frankly, insulting.
The narrator is particularly unbearable - her rendition of (e.g.) little lies was just about tolerable but here she unleashes the full force of the nasal, high-pitched over-annunciated whining that has made the Australian accent so feared around the world. My ears are still ringing.

BRILLIANT THROUGHOUT
Would you listen to The Last Anniversary again? Why?
No. not because I didn't enjoy it, because I really DID. I just don't see the point of reading any book a second time because part of the enjoyment is the anticipation of the outcome. If you already know it - what's the point?
What other book might you compare The Last Anniversary to, and why?
I wouldn't compare it with any other book as it is unique. All of Liane Moriarty's books are completely different
Which scene did you most enjoy?
There were so many outstanding scenes that I would find it hard to chose. This book was about 7 stories in 1 but they were all interlinked. The outcome of each tale as told at the end of the book was so enjoyable.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Would have if I could!!
Any additional comments?
I would definitely recommend this author to anyone. She would appeal to any age group. Her books are so enjoyable. She has a brilliant sense of humour and I found myself laughing out loud on many occasions. Liane Moriarty has out standing imagination, how she creates so many different personalities I just don't know. She is very talented, I just LOVE her books. I am sad that I have read them all and I hope it's not long before she finishes her next one.

Anything else is better
I have read and loved so many of Lianes’ books. This is not one of those. The reader sounds condescending and arrogant. She doesn’t read the book like she is a part of the novel. More like ‘this is beneath me to read this”, because that is how it sounds, totally spoils any chance to get ‘into’ the story. Keep trying to pick it up where i left off and listen to the story, always pushing myself, only halfway in. Caroline Lee get another job.

Could have been written in many less words!
Over all not bad - I continue to return to lianes books after Secrets and Lies but yet to find one that comes close - this one too many generations to follow and I feel
It could have been written as a shorter novel getting to what really happened quicker - last 2 hours a page turner but up till then slow and cumbersome always trying to understand who I was following - sooo many siblings, parents, aunts etc

great story telling
the reader Caroline Lees does a great job bringing the story alive. There were many moments I really had to laugh. So Australians. I am overseas at the moment so it felt good to connect with this part of the story. However, the resolution was left me feeling unsatisfied. I can understand that the author doesn't want to have necessarily all loose ends tied up and wants to stay connected to to a real life scenario however as a reader I found this disappointing that there was no solution for Sophie. Nonetheless great storytelling and I enjoyed the journey although towards the end I was keen to reach the end

Modern day Maeve Binchy?
I suppose, depending on your perspective, this may not be a compliment although in my case it is. There are many excellent female writers but few concentrate so well on families, their odd and discordant personality types and their obsessions/fears as well as Liane Moriarty. Maybe I could have rated it higher but the genre prevents me from doing so (well read classics being at best 5s). Here there was a clever blending or humour and deadly serious all told with suitable tongue in cheek without any hint of reticence. Hugely enjoyable even when the twists become almost too much for anything but farce. I shall certainly read more of her work. I am moving now to Ben Elton - who surprisingly I have never read - and do hope, as a male equivalent, he can hold up to this comic standard. After all he is a veteran of this genre - one of the few men who major in comic writing and scrips.
