Publisher's Summary

“An engaging, fast-paced read for fans of Philippa Gregory and of dual-timeline historical fiction." (Library Journal)

In the winter of 1483, Francis Lovell is Richard III’s Lord Chamberlain and confidant, but the threat of Henry Tudor’s rebels has the king entrusting to Francis and his wife, Anne, his most crucial mission: protecting the young Richard of York, his brother’s surviving son and a threat to Henry’s claims to the throne.

Two years later, Richard III is dead, and Anne hides the young prince of York while Francis is hunted by agents of the new king, Henry VII. Running out of options to keep her husband and the boy safe, Anne uses the power of an ancient family relic to send them away, knowing that in doing so she will never see Francis again.

In the present day, Serena Warren has been haunted by her past ever since her twin sister, Caitlin, disappeared. But when Caitlin’s bones are discovered interred in a church vault that hasn’t been opened since the 18th century, the police are baffled. Piecing together local folklore that speaks of a magical relic with her own hazy memories of the day Caitlin vanished, Serena begins to uncover an impossible secret that her grandfather has kept hidden, one that connects her to Anne, Francis and the young duke of York.

Inspired by the enduring mystery of the Princes in the Tower, Nicola Cornick cleverly interprets the events into a dazzling novel set between a present-day mystery and a country on the brink of Tudor rule.

Wow!! What a ride!

I love history and historical fiction. This was a time period I have not studied however always been fascinated about the brothers in the tower and king Richard. This was a story that kept me enthralled all the way to the last words. Brilliantly told and narrated.

Just enough magic…

I didn’t reread the summary before starting this book and that thrillingly added to the mystery. I previously knew very little about the War of Roses and this book had me constantly looking up the historical characters to learn more. I thoroughly enjoyed the history and thought the author did an artful job of weaving it into the modern part of the story. The magic (time travel) was understated, keeping me guessing, yet focused on the story. I do wish we got to know a bit more of the story about Richard and Francis in the end, I’m not completely satisfied with having to imagine their experiences.

I thought the narrator did an excellent job of capturing the emotions of the characters. Well done.

Delightful Story

Much in the vein of the Outlander series or the similar Broach series, this book is about two different times in history. It is so cleverly written that, as you read/listen, you are filled with wonder. Don't want to give any part away, but if you like either one of those series you will truly enjoy this book. I just wish it too was a series.

Didn't quite live up to its potential

The story is intriguing. I liked the characters. Narration was excellent. However, it did drag in spots. A good editor should have pared it down so that it moved along more smoothly.
