Publisher's Summary

Book 8 of the Ciaphas Cain series.

The Imperium's least willing hero is thrown back into the fight against another alien threat as Commissar Cain returns to a frozen planet to battle an incursion by monstrous orks.

Listen to it because....

It's a rip-roaring action adventure tale with a few daring twists and a whole load of that typical Ciaphas Cain humour. The opening sequence—involving a dramatic star ship crash—is particularly exciting.

The story:

Imperial commissar Ciaphas Cain returns to Nusquam Fundumentibus to crush the ork attacks which have been plaguing the frozen planet. But when his ship crashes into the wastelands outside the capital, it disturbs a far greater enemy, one which has lain dormant under the permafrost since long before the Imperium came to this world and could now threaten the whole sector. Faced with ongoing greenskin raids and keeping an over-enthusiastic novice commissar under control, Cain must rally his men and confront whatever emerges from beneath the rapidly melting ice....

Written by Sandy Mitchell. Narrated by Stephen Perring, Penelope Rawlins, Emma Gregory, Toby Longworth, Andrew James Spooner. Run time 9 hours and 30 minutes.

Weakest Installment

Unfortunately "The Last Ditch" is the weakest in the series to date. That's not to say it's a bad book because it's still enjoyable. It just suffers when compared to what has come before. The story is formulaic. Tell me if this sounds familiar: Cain thinks he is dealing with "xenos A" only for his palms to itch and to discover a much more dangerous threat in "xenos B." - this is how a few of the previous books went as well but they benefited from interesting side characters and locations. This story takes place on a boring planet, with boring politicians, and a boring threat. The presentation is top notch as always however.

Yet another great book

I can't get enough of the commisar's stories, I hope Sandy Mitchell just keeps writing them for as long as Games workshop allows him.

Great book

Sandy Mitchell does it again. Cain has to be the luckiest Commissar in the 40K universe.

Somehow tedious

I’ve been enjoying the Cain series so far i.e. every publishing before this. Yet I could barely finish this one. The storyline is somehow unbearably dull.

Cai-Cai-Ciaphas Cain! Hero of the Imperium!

Another excellent showing by Sandy Mitchell and the Vocal team. Cain's stories were always in my opinion, the best start for anyone wanting to get in the Imperial Guard section of the Lore and Black Library. This stands the test of time, for decades and will for decades more.

overall good

several plot points were needlessly kept hidden in what I presume was an attempt at drama, it instead served to make the characters all look dumb.

overall though, the book was add enjoyable as any of the CC books.

Easy to listen too but nothing great

The performances where great but the story was played out. Nothing really new happens but very easy to listen too so it flies by.

Same old Cain, same old Enemies, different book.

Good audiobook, as always from Sandy Mitchell but its the same old Enemies, Same old Plot of “bad thing appears out of nowhere while fighting other bad thing”. Sandy has a nasty habit of tying his ends together in the last hour of listening. However, its good to see the character development of Cain and its also good to see a new retinue of enemy types which haven’t appeared so far in the books and how Cain deals with them.

meh - phoning it by this point

same old formulaic stuff. nothing surprising and tbh hard to keep track of what was happening. it would have been better to have the book split into parts as it was hard to keep a grasp as to the timeline

Two of the worst accidents ever

South African and a Brummie accent 🤮 two of the worst known accents ever and I really hated listening to a storybook that had those all the way through. If I hadn’t paid for the book then I would of turned it off at chapter 2. I won’t be listening to this book ever again.

Great narration as always, not the best story

Usually Cain books are spot on, but this one seems to have missed the mark for some reason. While enjoyable for being a Cain book it left me underwhelmed.

As a Cain fanboy however I’ll always listen!
