Story
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First, he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce - and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So, we fight, to defend Earth and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Publisher's Summary
The Last Emperox is the thrilling conclusion to the award-winning, New York Times and USA Today best-selling Interdependency series, an epic space opera adventure from Hugo Award-winning author John Scalzi.
The collapse of The Flow, the interstellar pathway between the planets of the Interdependency, has accelerated. Entire star systems - and billions of people - are becoming cut off from the rest of human civilization. This collapse was foretold through scientific prediction...and yet, even as the evidence is obvious and insurmountable, many still try to rationalize, delay and profit from, these final days of one of the greatest empires humanity has ever known.
Emperox Grayland II has finally wrested control of her empire from those who oppose her and who deny the reality of this collapse. But "control" is a slippery thing, and even as Grayland strives to save as many of her people form impoverished isolation, the forces opposing her rule will make a final, desperate push to topple her from her throne and power, by any means necessary. Grayland and her thinning list of allies must use every tool at their disposal to save themselves, and all of humanity. And yet it may not be enough.
Will Grayland become the savior of her civilization...or the last emperox to wear the crown?

Wait that’s it
Worth the read to wrap up loose ends but really feels like this one was phoned in. Just meh, good quarantine listen if your doing house work, but it left the world building and exploration the first books did so well with behind. Wil Wheaton’s narration is solid as usual.

I bought 3 audiobooks for this crap.
I rate, but don’t write reviews often... but this ending seemed like slapped together crap from an author that got board half way through. When I picked up this series I didn’t think he was going to phone the ending in. Not only did the way he (not to give it away) leaned out the character pool leave very unfulfilling ending to character arcs, but the lack of details and thought behind it telegraphed the end of the book. It left only two possabilities. Either he left the ending twist to be written by an 8th grader, or it was going to end the way it did. There was no other way for it to end.
On the plus side the narration was great.

What a let down
After everything, this is just a giant letdown. Will did a great job, but it’s like 3/4 of the way through the book Scalzi realized he hadn’t done anything to wrap it up, and then tried to do it all at once.

A Solid End To a Trilogy
I typically don't like planned trilogies but my affection for Scalzi's writing isn't typical. It took me a bit to warm up to The Collapsing Empire-two listens, but once I did, I fell hard (in contrast, I immediately loved Lock In). Wil Wheaton, as always, is an absolute pleasure of a narrator, though I admit to my bias in that, super geek that I am, I probably would enjoy his narration regardless.
Good scifi requires a foundation in good science and this is no exception to Scalzi's collection. Accidentally relevant, the lessons in this trilogy pack a punch and I look forward to reading the next lesson.
P.S. without spoiling anything plot-wise, I have to say that, "glitter dumpster of a mother" is my favorite phrase now.

The dance floor is rented, the band is paid
It seemed a tight story which didn't waste a lot of time in tying up loose ends. All of the characters developed in the previous books are back and given a moment to shine. The story however seemed to suffer at the expense of the goal of this book. Which was to wind things down and bring things to a type of conclusion.. with no promise to follow up with the characters later. It rather felt like the last episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.. complete with a 'Q' stand in.. to answer all questions and teach a few lessons. I found myself grasping at threads of story lines that could have easily spun themselves off into entire novels.. but they were left as stage dressing for the reader to just imagine what happened to that story line.. but this book had one mainline core to its purpose which it relentlessly pursued to the end. In the end it reminded me of how they ended the Star Wars Saga in the most recent movies.. regardless of what the fans wanted.. or might have preferred.. this had to be the end. Oh well.

Was looking forward to it & found it disappointing
I was so looking forward to it, I pre-ordered it. To me it feels like Scalzi lost interest in his characters and interdependancy world, and was pushing to hit his publishing deadline. In the earlier books you buy in to the characters and the world building is enjoyable. Here the plot seems rushed, you loose all care for the characters to the point where they feel dispensable. It ended and my overall feeling is meh. The last chapter attempts to tie up lots of loose ends quickly and with no enjoyment, it feels like a list (for this bit of plot A happens, b happens to this part, C happens here, and oh D and E happen to wrap this up) which feels like the outline for the book rather than the book itself. It really wasn't satisfying. Not up to standard in my opinion. A Fail from John Scalzi here.

Third verse, same as the first and second
In this Interdependency novel, Grayland is struggling to maintain her position. No-one has faith in her ability to do the job, and she's struggling to get the noble houses to focus on the collapse of the flow. The Nohamapetans are trying to depose her, and Kiva Lagos is roped in to Grayland's attempts to foil the Nohamapetans' schemes. The Wu family are being duplicitous, and several nobles you've never heard of form conspiracies to enrich themselves.
So, here's a question. Which book in the Interdependency series was I talking about there?
Early on in The Last Emperox, Nadashe Nohamapetan reflects on how her single minded desire for revenge on Grayland has made her kindof a two dimensional villain. Yes, John Scalzi, well done, you've drawn attention to the problem with your story. Do you want to try and fix it maybe? Maybe give Nadashe Nohamapetan more depth or have her reflect on how her family keep trying to initate coups and it keeps going terribly? No? You're just going to go ahead and write the same story we've already read twice but it's fine, because you're lampshading how you're this story is just money for old rope.
I live in a country where there is constant political infighting which has led to gridlock for the last five years, so I can't say any of this is unrealistic. The thing is, just because it's realistic, that doesn't make it interesting to read, given we've read exactly the same book twice already.
Scalzi had an oppertunity with this book to move past the coups and the politicking, but he apparantly has a comfort zone. Maybe he thought the Interdependancy series was a series of political thrillers and he had to stick to that model. If that's the case, this book is a complete failure, because the whole thing is just Nadashe Nohamapetan orchestrating an incredibly elaborate series of coups from exile. She doesn't seem to have any problem getting bombs and poison into the most secure locations in the interdependency. She's one of the most wanted criminals in the Interdependency. How is she doing any of this? The culmination of the coup is just asanine as well.
Taken by itself, this book relies on co-incidence, characters behaving like idiots, and unrealistic motivations to reach a conclusion. As the final book in the series it's repetative and uninteresting.

Wrapped up quickly.
This story was wrapped up a bit quickly and I'd like to see a spin off book of a return to Earth.
I wasn't pleased that the main villains' lot in the end was superior to that of many billions when you consider the relative safety of living on a habitable planet with a natural environment.

Amazing performance from Wil Wheaton!
NO SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW
This is the third in an excellent futuristic series of books by John Scalzi. Will Wheaton narrates it and does an amazing job, easily navigating this book, which required several different accents to distinguish between characters. A brilliant series that I very highly recommend. John Scalzi has written many other SciFi books. I highly recommend that you check out his other titles. I also highly recommend looking for more books narrated by Wil Wheaton as he has done many other titles by John Scalzi and other amazing SciFi writers.

Always brilliant
Brilliantly written as always. John Scalzi never seems to disappoint. Wil Wheaton just has the perfect voice for narration. Absolutely loved the entire trilogy.

Enjoyable continuation of the story
Some plot points had too much of a convenient Deus Ex Machina for me, but overall still an enjoyable story and well worth a listen if you enjoyed the first two books.

Loved the entire journey. Full of great characters at a terrific pace. If you like sci-fi (hell, even if you don’t) you’ll love this.

So much potential, just to be rushed away.
I've really enjoyed this series, Mr Scalzi has built such an in-depth and interesting universe. It's such a shame it all ended so suddenly and conveniently. While I was keen for this book, I would have gladly waited longer if it led to a more in-depth story, especially in section 3.
Despite all this, I really enjoyed this book and Will Wheaton's performance of it was great.

Such a shame the story went downhill
I've seen others comment that the ending felt abrupt, rushed and convenient, and that is all true, but I tie a lot more significance to the end of a good story. For me, this ending has tainted what was a really enjoyable take up until this point. I tend to reread books a lot, with some series seeing yearly revisits. Unfortunately, this series will not qualify. The ending felt lazy and tropey and did a huge disservice to the characters I had come to love.

Pretty good
it felt a little rushed at the end, but not underwhelming at all. a very enjoyable series I'd recommend to anyone who likes some good easy sci fi. Will warms into the roles, I found it hard in book one but then the characterisations stuck.

The end
A great ending to an interesting series. A little predictable at times, but well worth a read. Will Weatons performance may not be as engaging as some other performers, but is enthusiastic enough to carry the story into its conclusion.

Unsatisfying
This was an adequate end without being spectacular. It felt rushed and like he was just trying to get the end, there were many sub-stories within that just got glossed over and the conclusion quickly and conveniently arrived to tie things up nicely. Wil Weaton was of course excellent in his narration but the story could have been more.

Amazing sci-fi series
Could not stop listening. What an incredible story teller. Have read many sci-fi series, this one stacks up with the best of them.

Fantastic
Brilliantly written and narrated.
I loved the dysfunctional family dynamics, the hearty disrespect for other’s family.
The storyline was so much fun.
Shame it had to end .
