Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Return to the Scholomance—a school of magic unlike any you have ever encountered—in the stunning sequel to the Sunday Times best-selling A Deadly Education, the start of Naomi Novik's groundbreaking crossover series.

There are no teachers, no holidays; friendships are purely strategic, and the odds of survival are never equal. Once you're inside, there are only two ways out: you graduate, or you die.

El, Orion and the other students are faced with their final year—and the looming spectre of graduation. El is determined that her chosen group will survive, but it is a prospect that is looking harder by the day as the savagery of the school ramps up. Until El realises that sometimes winning the game means throwing out all the rules....

Wry, witty, endlessly inventive and mordantly funny—yet with a true depth and fierce justice at its heart—this enchanting novel reminds us that there are far more important things than mere survival.

Like previous two...

The last book and I still don't know why I kept listening. None of them are great but like a silly soap opera, they keep you hooked word by word.

great second book

Not as good as the first book but still very good.
It would be a five star book if it did not end in the way it ended. I would like to go into detail about the ending but unfortunately that would ruin it for everyone else.

Narrator annoying

This book was slower in pace than the first book in the series, with huge chunks of 'info dump' that really slowed things down.
There was a lot to like and this magical world remains unusual and interesting. However, it needed a more international feel rather than the mostly American outlook. And it really needed to focus on moving the story forward rather than continually wandering off into yet another long explanation about how various parts of the school work.
The story wasn't helped by the narrators cut-glass English accent, with it's strange pronounciations. After a while it really started to grate. Isn't El supposed to be Welsh?!!

Excellent follow up to Deadly Education

I'm very glad it is the same voice actress as the first audiobook.
Difficult to review without risking spoilers.
It was exciting and directly following on from where the first book left off.
Some elements are different as the characters have grown and face new challenges. Definitely worth a listen if you liked book 1. I am still reeling as I have just finished it!

So good!

Loved the worldbuilding detail, action, friendship and romance. I noticed one minor error in the narration (a line repeated) but Dadia's performance was generally great. Can't wait for the next installment!

I hesitate to recommend this book...

Not because it isn't thoroughly brilliant - it is! The narration is excellent, the plot gripping, the characters likeable and engaging...but the ending will have you screaming "NO!!!!!" Thankfully, I believe a third book in this series is to be released next year to put us all out of our misery!

Great story, dodgy narrator

Great book, but the narration is terrible; comes across as try hard, annoying emphasis on every other word, strange pronunciation of some words, terrible, terrible accents and a uk/Indian accent which doesn’t fit given the protagonist is Welsh. A shame as it’s a great story

Strickter editor wanted

It might seem that this is another fantasy trilogy that should have been a single or maximum two book series. Novik's best ever work is Uprooted. Part of its brilliance is its single book format.

An overlong story is not the only problem. Novik also fails a fundamental test of any magic system. It has to have an internal logic. It seems Novik didn't think it through before she started writing - so she lets it slide and contradict itself as the story unfolds. This ensures that my suspension of disbelief is interrupted again and again.
Fantasy should be fantastical - but not contradictory.

5 outstanding stars!

I didn't think I could like this any more than book 1, I was so wrong! This book was everything I could have hoped for and more.

That ending was soul crushing, how can I possibly wait another year or more for book 3?!

Cliched and frustrating but enjoyable

Overall the Last Graduate is an enjoyable read, however I was frustrated by the incredibly repetitive over explanation of the main character's motivations and feelings. I also struggled with some of the more cliche plot points - namely, El becoming so powerful that the entire school turns to her for help.

Unique and Enthralling

The scholomance series is such a new and exciting world of magic. El is the grumpy sister I never knew I needed. I am waiting impatiently for the next instalment.

Brilliant sequel

I loved the first book but this sequel was even better. And what an ending! Not exactly a cliffhanger but... 😲😲😲😲😲!
The narration was wonderful too.
Can't wait for the next one.
