Publisher's Summary

Ever have the feeling you're being watched? A smart, unsettling, unputdownable literary thriller from the award-winning, critically acclaimed writer

Lina and Cain are doing their best to stay afloat. Money has been tight since Cain returned from active duty, and starting a family is proving harder than they thought.

Putting Lina's inherited lake house up for rent at weekends seems like the solution to at least one of their problems. The secluded house is more of a burden than a retreat, anyway, and fixing up the old place makes Cain feel useful for once.

But letting strangers stay in their house might not be the best idea. Someone is watching - their most mundane tasks, their most intimate moments - and all the things Lina and Cain want to keep hidden will be exposed.

A darkly riveting psychological thriller from the bestselling author of Call Me Evie, In the Clearing and Tell Me Lies.

'A twisty thriller ... Possibly not one to read in your rented holiday cottage. I'll certainly be checking the light fittings at my next beach holiday rental' The Age

'Chilling . . . Should keep readers up at night. Pomare knows how to keep the pages turning' Publishers Weekly

'An emerging master of the taut and fast-flowing psychological thriller' ArtsHub

'A plot that will drag breathless readers to the finish line' Herald Sun

'This is a rip-snorting read that burbles along on fine prose, from a novelist who while still early in his career has already stamped his mark as a masterful storyteller. An excellent read from a must-read author' Good Reading

'Tense and dark and twisty - don't look away' Michael Robotham, author of When You Are Mine

'J.P. Pomare's first two books rocked my world - this one manages to exceed them. The Last Guests is a cunning, complex, contemporary thrill-ride.' Christian White, author of The Nowhere Child

'The Last Guests is a twisty thriller with an ending I didn't see coming. A cautionary tale for our times.' Megan Goldin, author of The Night Swim

'Pomare's latest creation will keep you guessing right up to the last page.' Rose Carlyle, author of The Girl in the Mirror

'Couldn't put it down, can't stop thinking about it. Bump it to the top of your must-read list immediately.' Anna Downes, author of The Safe Place

Great atmosphere and dialogue, but denouement disappoints

I have to say hats off to Pomare for a first chapter which sets up an intriguing premise around hidden surveillance. From there tension builds up until some major action occurs halfway through the book. So far so very good, and I just had to keep listening virtually without breaks until the conclusion. Ah, yes, the conclusion. Unfortunately for me, this fell in the category of “And the objective of this complicated scheme was to achieve THIS?” Both the objective and the means of achieving it seem impossibly unlikely.
As for the reading, McCaffery does a great job on the narration and voices. I especially liked her voicing of Cain and the smarmy detectives and HR lady.

Thrilling gripping story with a twist

I found myself hooked from the start- loved this book so much! As a NZ kiwi expat I found myself loving the references to my beautiful country, thinking of stays I’ve had near the lakes… easy to imagine this happening… not sure I’ll ever feel the same about staying in an Airbnb again though. 10/10 for both story and performance- accents & voices were awesome especially Kane and Claire! I’m homesick now!

DFN - Bored and fell asleep

DNF - Read until chapter 21 and realised I just didn't care. I found this book boring, despite the interesting premise, and even fell asleep because the narrator's voice is so sleep inducing. Her constant soft spoken almost whispering voice was really annoying, I did not find her hushed tone suited the protagonist at all. Nothing really interesting happens in the first 15 chapters and I thought to myself OMG woman just get on with it. I will most definitely not choose this narrator again. Maybe the kindle version is better.

Dreadful

why write a book about a really stupid woman who has it all laid out in front of her and still is simpering weak star struck fool over a man . women are better than this but not in this book .

Good twists

I really enjoyed this story. Although the narrator whispered in a monotone when reading the main character which was quite off putting. Otherwise a very enjoyable read with lots of twists and turns.

Lacking

Whilst the story line was okay, the delivery by the narrator was too monotone especially during the suspensful parts.
Not one of my favourites!
