Publisher's Summary

Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Two centuries after the Confederation staved off an invasion by the robotic Locusts, Captain Jack Romanoff faces mandatory retirement from an ever-shrinking navy. Actions speak louder than words. The Confederation doesn’t think the Locusts are coming back.

But what if the politicians are wrong?

Snared in a scheme he doesn’t fully understand or trust, Jack gets his promotion, but it comes with a catch. With a crew of rejects, he must restore the most powerful warship humanity has ever built, after centuries of neglect and decay, before time runs out.

If he fails, humanity might not need to worry about history repeating itself ever again.

Quality stuff

I don't know what it is about JN Chaney's ability to spot talent, but he sure does have an eye for it. This collaboration, like so many before it, is a standout in a genre full of quality work. The Last Hunter is something you don't see too often in mil scifi (largely dominated by boots-on-the-ground marines) and instead gives us a more naval focused tale about survival. It reminded me of both Star Trek as well as Battlestar Galactica in the way it focused on officers and even the ship as a whole. Too few stories revolve around dudes with guns, shooting until one side is dead, and that's great fun for a while, but sometimes you want to try something else. This book delivers on that promise, providing a glimpse into the mind of a character on his way to retirement, much like Adama in BSG, and shows how a single crew can overcome the odds to save what they hold most dear.

I won't pretend to have read every book in the genre to date, because that's probably impossible, but this one definitely felt refreshing in more ways than one. I'll be waiting impatiently for the sequel to come, no question about it, and hoping for many more books down the road.

awesome

Great start to a new series. Chaney never disappoints. He releases so many great books that I haven't read anyone else in months. Keep up the great work!

Different & Great setup for subsequent books

The focus of this book is the mismanagement/stealing of resources dedicated to a moth balled massive battleship used to end a war over 200 years ago with "the locusts". It's all the political/military sinful human intrigue that will keep you listening.
We're following Jack Romanoff through his journey to take command and reestablish the ship into semi-functional order.
I like the intrigue and focus for this book. I was in a reading cycle that this book worked well for. There are no space battles until the end.
I also bought this book because of Backyard Spaceship's narrator and author
I loved the narration. It wasn't a super heavy book. Easy to follow while I did data entry or made dinner and did laundry--my glamourous mom life :-) And I can't wait for the next book on audible. The next book is only available currently on kindle. I hope they continue to use this narrator.
I want to hear/read the next book so much that I'll probably download it on my kindle and try and read it on my treadmill workouts. I'd prefer audible because that fits my life better! :-)

Pleasantly surprised

I needed to download another book really quickly before work started and I chose this one on a whim. It was a good decision. Despite a very weird and sort of slow start, the rest of the book was exciting and filled with intrigue. It does end on a massive cliff hanger. I can't wait for book two to come out. Jeffrey Kafer did a great job with his performance.

MC felt like he was just in a raging river

felt like he was just there to be in the story not lead it until the last quarter of the book. When he finally was giving orders it got good. first 3/4 things just happened and someone else took care of things . the revenge parts were fun, but he wasn't doing much until he was on the bridge later in the book.

Great New Story

I liked everything about part 1. You just cannot beat
Kafer especially when Chaney & Mixon wrote it.
Not sure about breaking a book into parts to get 3 or
4 purchases for one book.

Great audible book, roll on book 2

One of those books that sounded interesting, and it more than delivered. Not going to bore you with what the book is about - just read the abstract - but what I can say is this is a great book translated well into an audiobook.
